IIT is an interdisciplinary unit with a focus on trade and development issues, economics, business and law with a strong track record in: > > Specialised contract research and consulting, including trade-related research, providing strategic advice on business investment policy and sustainable development strategies > > Design and delivery of custom capacitybuilding and trade negotiation training activities > > Delivery of academic programs focused on international trade, trade law and economic development We know that developing economies that are internationally engaged and interconnected, grow faster. One of the many challenges we face, is ensuring that the benefits of global integration are distributed evenly throughout these economies. The IIT has the capability and expertise to address this global challenge, through our research, teaching and the provision of strategic policy advice. 3 Training and formal academic programs Training and capacity building Our training is developed and delivered by IIT experts and is tailored to the specific needs of government and business clients. Our training programs help to develop the capability of government and trade officials to navigate and negotiate current trade issues, implement regulatory reforms and ultimately enhance their ability to participate in international trade, boost economic development and contribute to the alleviation of poverty in their countries and regions. IIT has experience in all aspects of customised programs from design through to completion, assessment of learning outcomes, monitoring and post-program reporting. IIT s diverse learning approaches are rich in focused teaching, contextualised and individualised learning, immersive and interactive experiences, and content targeted to capacities and adult learning needs. We are experienced in facilitating cohort engagement through professional linkages with government, business and international networks, and delivering applied outcomes. Focus The overall focus of our training is to narrow development, information and policy gaps in order to build strong and resilient institutions and economies. Training and capacity building activities support evidence-based understanding of analytical and policy frameworks to build individuals and institutions capable of developing, implementing and monitoring effective and inclusive trade policy initiatives. A key strength of IIT s activities and inputs is the flexibility to address and respond to contemporary issues and concerns as they arise, and to link trade programs and alumni into established networks and support. IIT training and capacity building incorporates ongoing mentoring, monitoring of work plans for sustainability in participants workplaces, and organisational development, including through academic opportunities and research. Formal postgraduate academic programs Our programs provide graduates with a practical understanding of current international trade and investment issues, the political dynamics of the negotiating environment and the opportunities and challenges presented to businesses by the globalised economy. 4 Research and Consulting Our unique staffing profile IIT has conducted contract work for businesses in Australia and overseas and through research projects funded by government, the private sector and international intergovernmental organisations, including ADB, ASEAN Secretariat, ACIAR- RIRDC, DFAT, ERIA, OECD, UNECLAC, USAID, WTO and Worldbank. The Institute has completed a number of significant projects over the years. These include regional trade research studies, national studies for Pacific island economies, studies in relation to regional integration various FTAs, (e.g. impacts of ChAFTA for the South Australian government, how-to handbook for ASEAN business under the AANZFTA, PACER Plus impact and needs assessment studies) and publications and case studies on WHO participation, povertyreduction, and trade and the MDG s. Higher Degree Research in the IIT encompasses a diverse range of topics and disciplines, including basic and applied research addressing contemporary trade issues and informing trade policy discussions. PhD students from a variety of disciplines, including trade, development studies, economics, business and law, have studied for higher degrees within the IIT. Here they have played a critical role in the development of our rich multidisciplinary research environment. iit.adelaide.edu.au/research/ IIT brings together leading academics and experienced trade practitioners and negotiators from national governments and international organisations. Our unique staffing profile is comprised of a vast network of associate experts with backgrounds in the fields of international trade, trade law, trade and economic analysis, trade negotiations, policy research and implementation, and the delivery of aid, development and capacity building programs. Our expertise encompasses developments in global and regional value chains, including in agriculture and manufacturing sectors, trade in services and investment, and many aspects of regional economic partnerships and FTAs (rules of origin, non-tariff barriers, facilitation, standards, dispute settlement etc). The integration of IIT into the University of Adelaide s Faculty of the Professions allows it to engage with trade issues in a multidisciplinary setting, and to draw on a large body of economic, legal, business and trade related expertise. Point of difference IIT enjoys a unique understanding with the World Trade Organisation whereby IIT staff can be immersed for up to a year on exchange with the WTO Secretariat in Geneva in order to strengthen connections with European and Geneva-based trade and economic institutions. Conversely, experts from the WTO work and teach within IIT.

Linkages into alumni networks and scholarship programs, established through the Institute s training, capacity building and post-graduate academic and research programs in international trade and development also enhance the impact and sustainability of IIT activities.
