Play a leading role in the development and growth of University Centres for Research and Knowledge xchange, managing the effective cross-functional support required to deliver centre plans. Lead the expanding Research Development and Research Delivery teams and manage the integration of related activities across other central and faculty based professional service teams. Act as the University s professional service lead in authoring, project managing, negotiating and delivery of strategic and high profile institutional and collaborative funding applications, submissions and consultations SB/Ht Oct 17

2 Key Tasks Research Growth and Delivery Support the PVC (RK) and Director of RK in the organisational and culture changes required in the creation, delivery and successful activity of University Centres for Research and Knowledge xchange (UCRK). Provide strong research development expertise and guidance to the Research Development team and academic colleagues to support the development of major research projects across a broad range of disciplines, especially those with significant complexity, a multi-disciplinary focus and/or of strategic importance. Provide expert advice, guidance and intelligence to academic and senior leadership staff in the development of research growth strategies. Lead on the provision of a restructured research award management functions, supporting academic colleagues, ensuring the seamless delivery of grant obligations and the provision of high quality data collection to inform funder reporting. Develop close and effective working relationships with the major research funding bodies including UKR, U and/or other international research sponsors, charities and foundations in support of the University s research growth. Lead and develop a strategic approach to the research infrastructure and facilities growth in support of working to support UCRK priorities. Provide high-level strategic advice on the development of University-wide funding strategies and implementation RK support activities to grow current and new award income. Leadership and Management Provide strategic leadership, guidance and co-ordination for the enhancement of research income and research quality across RK teams and wider pan-university-wide provision. Lead and manage the growing Research Development team and the newly established Research Delivery team ensuring successful integration of operational activities across faculty-based support and professional service teams including, Finance, Legal and Human Resources. Support and lead the closer integration of activities across the full breadth of RK directorate teams, particularly around new initiatives. Lead and develop the University s provision for early career researcher development SB/Ht Oct 17

3 Lead and manage institutional level awards and projects ensuring funder compliance and reporting. Sector Profile Maintain, understand and respond to the national and international landscape for research, ensuring that the University is well positioned to rapidly adapt to change. Maintain an active external strategy and policy profile on behalf of the University, including, responding to consultations, informing policy by membership of national groups and networks, and presenting at regional and national conferences and seminars. Develop broad and productive internal networks and a detailed understanding of research strength and capacity. ngage nationally and internationally to promote the University s capabilities, influencing funding and application strategies by securing partnerships that support research growth and income generation. Regularly represent the University at regional and national meetings with senior colleagues from our current and potential partners and funders. Research and Knowledge xchange Senior Management As one of three section Heads within RK leadership team you will have wider departmental and institutional responsibilities for staff development, budgetary management, reporting and strategy. As a senior administrative member of staff, contribute to the wider development of the University s professional services and academic support arrangements. The undertaking of other duties and responsibilities that are commensurate with the nature and grade of the post, as may be assigned by the Director Research and Knowledge xchange Deputise for the Director of RK and the PVC RK when required. You may be required to undertake a specific Health & Safety role, commensurate with your grade, to support the University in meeting its statutory Health & Safety obligations. This could include acting as a DS Assessor, First Aider, Fire Marshall or Departmental Safety Co-ordinator. The allocation of such roles will be subject to the provision of appropriate training and assessment of competence. You may, with reasonable notice, be required to work at any of the Manchester Metropolitan University sites. C 4.1 Significant experience of working in a UK University central research office environment 4.2 xtensive experience of working with a range of UK A/ research funders, together with a thorough knowledge of international research and other funding programmes and associated procedures. 4.3 xtensive experience of leading and facilitating and the development of major strategic research projects or complex collaborative funding applications involving several organisations; with a track record of success across a broad range of subject disciplines, type of proposal and funders. 4 Relevant xperience 4.4 Successful track record of developing and implementing strategies and processes with institution-wide application.
