1 JOB PROFILE Job Title: Editorial Manager Department Digital & Creative Location Farringdon, London, UK Reports to: Head of Creative Delivery Grade: 3 Budget responsibility: None Line management responsibility: Writer/Editor x 2 Policy Communications Editor Child Safeguarding Level: Level 1 This post has been classified to be a Level 1 position. A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) basic check or equivalent overseas police check will be obtained for employees at this level prior to their Start Date. As the post is not covered by the Exceptions Order 1975 to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, any spent criminal convictions will not be considered when considering suitability for the role. Background Save the Children is the world s independent children s organisation. More than ever, effective communication is becoming a central part of almost everything we do, from programme delivery, to our work in emergencies, to global campaigning. In today s digital world it has never been more important to create high quality communications content, that reflects our values, promotes our brand, and builds our voice in the UK and internationally. As such, this post is a key contributor to that vision. Job Purpose: To research, commission, write and edit accessible and engaging content for a range of high quality online materials, reports and toolkits that reinforce Save the Children s brand and priorities, grow our influence and income, and to lead a team of writer/editors to do the same. You must have experience commissioning and writing content for online platforms, reports and marketing materials, be a highly skilled researcher with a nose for good story, and have a keen eye for detail when it comes to editing. You will play a key role in promoting good practices and ensuring we are following our image and brand guidelines. Key accountabilities:

2 1. Take a lead role in researching, commissioning, and editing Save the Children s online materials, reports and toolkits. 2. Advise, steer and support the development of new written materials from within your team and externally. 3. Contribute to and sometimes lead creative concept generation and delivery across Medias for a variety of purposes from fundraising to campaigning to PR and news outlets. 4. To build pages and amend content on Save the Children s website using the site s content management system to help effectively communicate the organisation s messages to a digital audience 5. Consult with colleagues across the organisation but particularly within the digital teams to identify needs, gaps and priorities in Save the Children s written output. 6. Manage two Writer/Editors and one Policy Communications Editor, offering supervision, support, training, development and motivation, and applying Save the Children s employment practice, policies and procedures. 7. Work with authors and contributors of copy to advise on structure and content, ensure quality, factual accuracy, and coherence with Save the Children s principles, to rework, sub -edit, ensure that copy has been approved, incorporate amendments, copy-edit, and proof read and check to ensure house-style is followed and quality maintained. Commission freelance writers, editors and proof readers as required. 8. Deliver high quality editorial content for a wide range of key corporate communications when necessary, including online, PR, news, magazines, marketing materials, posters, leaflets, and more, in line with the organisation s priorities and brand, and implementing Save the Children s editorial style and standards. 9. Develop a working knowledge of Save the Children s priority programmatic areas, building a strong relationship with appropriate teams across the organisation. 10. Develop and undertake assignments to generate core editorial content for digital and publishing outputs by interviewing or researching information from Save the Children UK staff, project users (especially children), supporters and members of the public, and to secure approval of draft text with them. 11. Provide training, advice and support to other staff on developing q quality materials, including interviewing, gathering material, writing, and implementing our brand positioning, communications guidelines and house style. 12. Operate within budget available. 13. Actively maintain positive working relationships outside of your working unit, in the wider department, and internationally as appropriate to the role.

3 14. Keep up to date with current practice in the field of work, and be committed to personal development appropriate to the role. 15. Be expert in the Save the Children brand, and actively promote and develop it. 16. Be familiar with children's rights issues, and consult and involve children in your work where appropriate. 17. Be available to work out of hours as required, for example during emergencies or periods of high media activity. 18. Perform such other tasks and responsibilities as may be required from time to time in an order to ensure the smooth running of the Creative team. 19. Deputise for Head of Creative Delivery as required.

4 Accountability- Ambition-Collaboration Creativity- Integrity Person specification Essential Technical Skills: Significant and demonstrable experience of high quality writing/journalistic and editorial skills Ability to write compelling, imaginative copy tailored for different audiences, explain complex issues in accessible and motivating language Excellent editing, copy-editing and proof-reading skills Professional experience in the creation of web content and the use of CMS preferably experience using an enterprise-level content management system. Drupal experience would be advantageous Enough HTML/xHTML and Photoshop experience to be able to make minor design changes Experience of writing and editing for emerging digital channels such as blogs, and social media (notably Facebook and Twitter) Awareness and experience of web accessibility and usability best practices Personal Skills: Demonstrable experience of managing a high functioning team Understanding and experience of communicating online from twitter and Facebook to the Huffington Post. A solid understanding of editorial processes and familiarity with production processes, from commissioning to finished product Ability to manage time, including negotiating deadlines and demands with clients or bringing in line managers to negotiate where appropriate. Knowledge of development and children s issues or experience of working in the voluntary sector Strong interpersonal communications skills, including the ability to handle a wide range of contacts with tact and persuasiveness, and to brief authors and contributors of copy Ability to research, absorb and retain information accurately Experience of working within budget constraints A commitment to team-working and a willingness to contribute to crossdepartmental initiatives A commitment to SC UK s vision, mission, values and approach (equal opportunities etc.) Ability to plan, manage, organise and prioritise own workload effectively, often to tight-deadlines Ability to operate within a predominantly administratively self-servicing environment; computer literate. 4
