2 Position Description [Position Title] Context Lincoln University is New Zealand s specialist land-based university, with a mission to tackle global challenges: Feed the World, Protect the Future, and Live Well. The University is committed to teaching and research excellence, and prides itself on its unique student experience and research culture that empowers its students, staff and graduates to make a real difference. With three academic faculties, two teaching divisions, several research centres, and a range of corporate service units, the University draws its students from throughout New Zealand and from over 60 countries. The University has a student roll of around 3,000 and approximately 600 staff. Purpose The Business Analyst role is responsible for assisting with the analysis of information, initiating appropriate communication and actions to improve the running of the organisation. It involves management reporting and business planning. Key Outputs Key Performance Indicators Business Analysis and Planning Prepare and review management reports and analysis of key business trends. Update and review monthly reporting to Management and ensure the integrity of all project reporting. Assist in planning and preparing the corporate plans, including co-ordination with the Faculty and Departmental Managers. Involvement in monthly review / analysis of enrolment figures conjunction with Reporting Analyst and Planning Manager. Analyse financial information, initiate appropriate communication and actions to improve the profitability of the organisation. Conduct ad hoc projects as required by the Planning Manager and Chief Operating Officer. Reports meet agreed standard and timeframes, are relevant to current business needs, and are used to measure success and support informed decision making. Senior management is well informed of developments and any risks to the University. Contribute to the strategic and business planning processes, in accordance with current University systems and processes. Opportunities for improvement are identified and this information is available to support management decision making as required. Business analysis undertaken for the University is completed to agreed standards and within agreed timeframes. 2

3 Key Outputs Key Performance Indicators Service Delivery Provide high quality analytical services to support the delivery of the University s business strategies and activities. To keep up to date on trends, and research findings in areas of University priority through background reading. Create/ improve tools and reports to empower stakeholders to make data-driven decisions. Treaty of Waitangi Support the University to meet its obligations under the Treaty of Waitangi. Services are managed in line with organisational priorities, policies, and resource allocation. Service delivery is monitored and operational information is available as required to support management decision making. Services are subject to continuous improvement to support current and future business needs, reflecting knowledge of best practice and response to customer feedback. Demonstrates, and encourages others to demonstrate, support for the University s commitment to the Treaty of Waitangi. Health & Safety Becomes familiar, and comply, with all H&S policies and procedures. Complies with all Lincoln University legislative requirements in respect of occupational H&S. Reports any hazard that has come to your attention. Wears protective clothing/apparatus as required. Other University Responsibilities Comply with all legal and University requirements in respect of the administration and management of all university records. Other reasonable duties, that are aligned to your skills and experience as required. All Lincoln University H&S policies and procedures are complied with. All Lincoln University legislative requirements in respect of occupational health and safety are complied with. The employer is notified of any hazard that has come to the employee s attention in the course of their employment. Protective clothing/apparatus are used where procedures or common sense would warrant this. All legal and University requirements are complied with in respect of the administration and management of all university records. Agreed KPI s are met. Staff Supervised The Business Analyst is not responsible for the supervision of staff. Accountability The Business Analyst reports to the Planning Manager. 3

5 Person Specification Qualifications A Tertiary qualification is desired Experience The position requires 3-5 years experience in a related field or position. Technical Skills Technical prowess ability to translate the needs of the VCOF to the rest of the business Analytical and problem-solving skills Attention to detail - the ability to document business processes and procedures Advanced computer skills, particularly around Excel and ability to manipulate data. Strong planning and organising abilities. Strong numerical skills. Excellent analytical skills. Personal Attributes Commercial acumen - you need to be able to quickly identify areas for business improvement Strong interpersonal skills you will often act as the intermediary between various areas of the business Highly developed interpersonal, oral and written skills. High degree of initiative in seeking solutions. Ability to work within the LU policies and procedures and promote a harmonious working environment. 5
