2 Position Description Technical Business Analyst Context Lincoln University is New Zealand s specialist land-based university, with a mission to tackle global challenges: Feed the World, Protect the Future, and Live Well. With three academic faculties, two teaching divisions, several research centres, and a range of corporate service units, the University draws its students from throughout New Zealand and from over 60 countries. The University has a student roll of around 3,000 and approximately 600 staff. Information Technology Services (ITS) at Lincoln University is responsible for the provision of facilities and services as well as the management, development, implementation and operation of the business systems of the University. These systems are run on a range of hardware over a network managed by ITS. ITS provides technological tools and services to enable the business units and faculties of Lincoln University to meet their business objectives. ITS is charged with understanding Lincoln University s activities, strategic and operational objectives and ensuring technology helps rather than hinders their achievement. Purpose The role of the Technical Business Analyst is to work with business and technical customers to identify, model, analyse, develop and facilitate the implementation of improvements to business process, workflow and systems and to consider the outcomes of these systems are able to deliver maximum efficiency and business value. The role requires working with multiple stakeholder groups to elicit the competing needs of all groups. You will be responsible for gathering technical requirements, mapping business processes and identifying areas for improvement and automation. To be able to clarify, update or improve business process impacted by technology changes. To enable informed decision-making about investments in technology aligning with Lincoln University s strategic goals and overall technical direction. Key Outputs Key Performance Indicators Business Analysis Understand customer s requirements including business workflows, functional and technical specifications Perform research and interviews to determine IT business requirements and then translate such into specifications for technical projects Creation of clearly written business requirements documentation 2

3 Analyse, facilitate, model, and organize information in order to reconcile conflicts, elicit requirements and distinguish solution ideas from business needs Detailed and accurate information and data are collected for the production of the required documents as per standard project methodologies Facilitating the negotiation of requirements amongst multiple stakeholders Run efficient workshops, producing fully documented requirements and solution options Identifying the current- and future-state business processes Delivering elements of systems design, including data migration rules, business rules, wireframes, or other detailed deliverables All stakeholders are engaged and elicits and evaluates feedback Current State and Future State documentation created and kept up to date Create or update technical documentation to a high standard Change Management Assist in business Change Management activities Focus on the people side of change in the area of systems and technology, processes, job roles and skills, as well as organisational structures Work to drive ultimate utilization, faster adoption and higher proficiency on change impacted on personnel in the organization in order for business results to be achieved Leads and supports change Project Management Help the project manager meet schedule, business and budget objectives Leadership Motivates and develops others Displays business acumen Treaty of Waitangi Support the University to meet its obligations under the Treaty of Waitangi. Other University Responsibilities Comply with all legal and University requirements in respect of the administration and management of all university records. Other reasonable duties, that are aligned to your skills and experience as required. The employer is notified of any hazard that has come to the employee s attention in the course of their employment. Staff Supervised The Technical Business Analyst is not responsible for the supervision of staff. Accountability The Technical Business Analyst reports to the Applications Manager, through to the IT Director, Chief Operating Officer and thence to the Vice Chancellor. Key Relationships Applications Manager IT Project Managers ITS entire staff Key staff within all of the functional groups in Lincoln University, including both General staff and Academic staff Person Specification Qualifications The relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent experience Experience The position requires: Minimum of 3 years experience in a Business Analyst role Technical Skills Strong analytical ability Problem solving Excellent communications skills, both written and oral Facilitation and elicitation skills 4

5 Visual modelling skills Strong attention to detail Business Analyst tool sets, including Microsoft Office suite. Office 365 Personal Attributes Strong relationship building skills Critical Thinking, using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions Ability to work unsupervised or part of a team Acceptance of professional feedback Honesty Highly motivated with a positive approach Ability to work within the LU policies and procedures and promote a harmonious working environment. 5
