Work involves operation of heavy equipment such as backhoes, and loaders, motorized street sweepers, graders, and single-axle dump trucks. Work also involves a wide variety of maintenance activities requiring the use of tools and equipment such as jackhammers, water pumps, mowers, air compressors, and other related equipment. 2 7/11/2014 POSITION: CLASSIFICATION: PAY GRADE: REPORTS TO: Heavy Equipment Operator n Exempt - Hourly Street Superintendent NATURE OF WORK This is skilled and semi-skilled work in maintenance, construction, and repair of city facilities. Work involves the operation of heavy equipment such as backhoes, end loaders, motorized street sweepers, graders, and single-axle dump trucks. Work also involves a wide variety of maintenance activities requiring the use of tools and equipment such as jackhammers, water pumps, mowers, air compressors, and other related equipment. Work may also involve manual or lesser skilled equipment operation as assigned. Work is performed under general supervision and is reviewed in progress and upon completion by the Street Superintendent. Work also will include general public relations as applied to this position and City operations. Work will require some paperwork as related to City contracted project inspections or Iowa One calls and mapping. DUTIES Operates jackhammers, pumps, mowers, air compressors, sprayers, snow blowers, and various hand tools. Operates street sweeper in the cleaning of public streets and thoroughfares. Operates sewer jet and related equipment in sewer maintenance. Operates heavy equipment such as single-axle dump trucks, trucks and trailers, end loaders, backhoes, trenchers, graders in construction, maintenance, and repair operations as assigned. Operates Rental Equipment such as skid loaders, personnel lifts, and etc. Participates in manual maintenance and construction of streets, sewer, parks, and other city facilities. Operates snow removal equipment. Assists with tree trimming and removal. Operates welder and torch in light manufacturing, fabrication, and equipment repairs. Oversees maintenance or construction projects. Erects posts, signs, barricades and warning signs or lights. Performs a wide variety of grounds, equipment, and building maintenance activities in city facilities and properties. Page 1 of 4

3 7/11/2014 Mows grass and brush in City right of way, and at the municipal airport with hand, power, and tractor mowers; trims grass along fences, trees and buildings with hand or power tools, operates tractors and trucks. Assists or performs recordkeeping for certain department functions such as Iowa One Call locations, sewer maintenance records, etc. Assists in preparing specifications for small City projects. Assists in supervisory capacity on occasion. Must have communication skills necessary to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with employees and the general public. Keeps Street Superintendent and City Manager abreast of projects, progress or problems. Safely operate a variety of street maintenance and cleaning equipment, including: maintainer, end-loader, dump truck, steel roller and street sweeper. Reviews VCR tapes to locate bad areas in sewer main and sewer service lines. Recommends repairs. Operates motor grader to smooth rock on gravel roads and alleys. Maintains and services equipment by changing oil, greasing moving parts, replacing filter and other parts; changing tires; cleaning windows; and performing other routine maintenance Ability to be courteous, diplomatic, and respectful when dealing with the citizens of the community. Performs related work as required. Assists other departments as requested. QUALIFICATIONS Educational Requirements High School Diploma or Equivalency Technical Skills and Other Requirements Considerable experience in street and public works maintenance, or any equivalent combination of experience and training that would provide the following knowledge, abilities and skills: Considerable knowledge of the tools and equipment used in general maintenance, construction, and repair of City facilities. Ability to handle multiple projects Ability to perform moderate to heavy manual tasks and work in all types of weather. Ability to perform minor equipment maintenance tasks. Ability and desire to attend training sessions to gain knowledge of public works operations Possession of good record keeping and mapping skills. Ability to follow standard safety practices and procedures common to maintenance and construction work; ability to follow written and oral instructions. Ability to take a lead role on the team. Ability to perform department duties as needed, day or night. Ability to work on or repair: water main breaks, vales, and hydrants Ability to repair sewer mains and sewer manholes. Ability to repair storm sewers and intakes. Ability to make up specifications for rehabilitation of sewer mains and manholes. Ability to use lifts for tree trimming and street lights. Knowledge of general electrical work. Knowledge of transit & grade rods. Assists with welding projects. Ability to work with other departments, public or private. Ability to complete fieldwork for sewer monitors. SPECIAL REQUIREMENT Possession of a current State of Iowa Commercial Driver s License upon appointment in this classification and continued maintenance of the license throughout period of employment.
