Awesome opportunity to become part of the King County Sheriff's Office Fire Investigator team. Responsibilities of this position include investigating fires to determine their origin and cause. The incumbent will also conduct a criminal follow-up investigation for fires determined to be incendiary. This position is a civil service position, for information regarding King County Civil Service Rules you can access these rules at Civil Service Rules. WORK SCHEDULE: This position is not exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act, and is overtime eligible with prior approval. The regular work hours are 40 hours per week, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Additional hours may be necessary to respond to workload needs, which may include evenings and weekends.

2 JOB DUTIES: Investigate origin and cause of fires in unincorporated King County and incorporated sites, having inter-local or mutual aid agreements with the County Interview witnesses and suspects and conduct follow-up investigations including detection, apprehension and prosecution of arson suspects Provide expert testimony in court for both criminal and civil cases Prepare investigation summary reports and fire investigation statistics as required Prepare extensive detailed written reports scientifically documenting the cause of a fire in arson cases and submit case documentation to King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office; prepare reports for owners, fire departments and other agencies Participate in the development of operational policies Perform other duties as assigned EXPERIENCE, QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS: Advanced knowledge and understanding of principles and techniques of fire, arson and criminal investigations Knowledge and understanding of current fire investigation principles, methodologies and techniques; principles of fire science and fire behavior; laws and legal ramifications of fire and criminal investigations; fire and building codes Knowledge of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Guide for Fire and Explosion Investigations and NFPA 1033 Standard for Professional Fire Investigator Advanced skill in writing detailed technical and scientific reports; gathering, analyzing and synthesizing data; working with a variety of individuals from diverse backgrounds in high stress situations Skill in effectively communicating orally and in writing; writing clear and concise detailed reports and fire investigation documentation; ability to make formal presentation to groups and committees; problem-solving, conflict resolution and decision making Ability and skill in handling firearms Skill in handling multiple competing priorities within tight timelines; developing and maintaining effective working relationships with a variety of constituents Basic skill in using MS Word, Excel and current database software; must be comfortable and proficient with computer use to perform functions associated with on-going work NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Candidate must have a Washington State driver's license or be able to obtain one Ability to successfully complete the approved Basic Law Enforcement Academy or state approved Reserve Academy within the first six (6) months of employment and/or from the next available Academy date. Positions require the ability to work irregular hours, in the outdoors under unfavorable weather and site conditions Positions require the ability to handle strenuous physical tasks such as digging, lifting and climbing Positions require the ability to handle physical and emotional stresses including investigations with victim suffering and/or serious/fatal injuries Additional licenses, certifications and other requirements determined to be necessary

3 to meet the business needs of the employing unit may be required Highly Desirable Qualifications: A minimum of five years full-time experience performing fire investigations; or a minimum of four years of experience as a law enforcement officer or as a career firefighter and one year of experience performing fire investigations.
