It adversely affects the employees and employers due to loss of wage and loss of production respectively. The nation is also affected by absenteeism. It is one of the chronic problems faced by the Indian industries. Excess absenteeism can result in significant reduction the production and ultimately put the undertaking into a loss. It affects the working life and its quality. Absenteeism is the failure to report to work or remaining absent without prior permission or sanction from the concerned authorities. It is an absence without taking leave. Absenteeism among engineering workers is universally acknowledged. Absenteeism is an index of sickness and fatigue. Therefore this study is an attempt to investigate the absenteeism of the engineers and turnover in selected Industrial Estate Industries located in Ambattur. The present study comprises both primary and secondary data. The primary data was collected by personal interaction and well structured questionnaire of engineering employees. Secondary has been collected through books, research magazines and journals, online resources, various reports on absenteeism. The sample size of 97 respondents was selected by using convenient sampling. Key words: Absenteeism, Turnover, Engineers, Industry. Cite this Article: Dr. D. Rajasekar, Dr. M. Thiagarajan and T.N. 2 Impact of Engineers Absenteeism and Turnover in Selected Ambattur Industrial Estate Industries, Chennai 1. INTRODUCTION Management s interest in labor turnover is strongly related to the business cycle. Under conditions of economic decline when the demand for labor is decreasing, turnover is not so much considered a problem, as rather a blessing for the prosperity of the individual, the firm and society. The inescapable message of the consultants literature was that the costs of labor turnover were considerable: ranging from fifty per cent of an annual salary till one twenty five per cent in case of some human resource and marketing experts. Such implications show only a one-sided interest in the costs of labor turnover and neglect other effects. Additionally, in most of the cases the claims put forward also lack an empirical basis. The research aims to contribute to the empirical analysis of the effects of labor turnover and absenteeism. 2. REVIEW OF LITERATURE Murty and Abhinov (2012) made a study entitled Canteen facility- A critical factors for the healthy physical work environment of the employees in industrial organizations having the objectives of knowing the canteen facility and welfare facility provided by the industrial units in India using stratified random sampling method. Tools like Factor analysis, k means cluster analysis were used. From the t-test it is found that private unit employees are frequent visitors to the canteen rather than public unit employees. This study concluded that canteen facility plays an important role in employee presence in the duty and it needs to be improved. Ekramul Hogue and Mayenulislam (2003) made a study on contribution of some behavioral factors to absenteeism of manufacturing workers in Bangladesh. The objective of the study is to measure the influence of such specific behavioral and social factors, demographic variables, job stress, mental health, pay inequity, personal and family life satisfaction on absenteeism of the workers by using simple random sampling. Tools like correlation analysis, multiple regression, chi-square test were used. From the correlation analysis, it is found that absenteeism has significant positive correlation with job stress and negative correlation with job satisfaction and mental health. The study concluded that behavioral factors have high impact on absenteeism rather than demographic variables. 3. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM A motivated workforce can really make a difference when competing in the market. A high turnover rate is contradictory to high performance because it shows that one of the core conditions of high performance- highly committed workforce is not met. Additionally, high commitment human resource management requires long periods of training and socialization. Consequently, it will take more time before the break even point between investments in human capital and returns to the investments is reached. Thus the study is conducted to know the effects of engineer absenteeism and turnover in selected industries in Ambattur industrial estate. Labour absenteeism and employee turnover rate is contradictory to high performance because it shows that one of the core conditions of high performance- highly committed workforce. The problem will be studied to find the reason behind the absenteeism and employee turnover. 4. OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY To study the engineer absenteeism and turnover in selected industries at the Ambattur industrial estate. To find out the information to the extent, nature and relative importance of various human problems related to absenteeism & turnover. To provide suggestions to management to reduce labor absenteeism & turnover in the future editor@iaeme.com

3 Dr. D. Rajasekar, Dr. M. Thiagarajan and T.N. Lekha To know the engineering employee satisfaction level in different human resource policies in the organizations. 5. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY The research approach selected for the study was an exploratory descriptive survey as per the nature of the study. The present study was concerned with the collection of information on prevailing engineer absenteeism and turnover in the Industrial estate of Ambattur. For this purpose, an exploratory descriptive survey approach was considered most appropriate Research is Setting The Industries located in Ambattur were selected for the study. The sample used in this study comprises of engineers working in different levels of management at five major industries. Convenient sampling method was adopted for selecting the respondents from all specialized areas available in each industry. Sample size refers to the number of respondents from total population, in this study sample size is 97 based on convenience sampling.so this research will fit into the type of Descriptive research design.a survey instrument in the form of self administered questionnaire was developed for the purpose of collecting main data for the study.in this questionnaire five point likert scale ranging from strongly agree to strongly disagree Mode of Analysis In this study, various statistical methods were employed to analyze data collected from 97 respondents from five major industrial estates. The statistical package called Statistical package for Social Science was used to analyze data the researcher collected.these methods include Factor analysis 6. FACTOR ANALYSIS Aim: This tool has been applied on the following 10 variables to identify the important influencing factors under different dimensions. The factors considered for the analysis are Accident & illness Low morale Poor working condition Boredom on job Lack of job satisfaction Inadequate leadership Personal problem Poor physical fitness Transportation problem Stress Workload Employee discontent with environment

FINDINGS Interpretation From the communalities table and rotated component matrix table it is inferred that the following factors were classified under four different dimensions and identified as very important variables. Dimension I - Low morale Dimension II -Transportation problem Dimension III -Workload Dimension IV - Boredom with job 8. SUGGESTIONS In order to minimize the negative effects of low morale, transportation problem, workload and boredom with job, management can provide training to help engineering employees to develop strategies in solving their issues by themselves. Employers should look into the possibility of designing training programs to assist employees in taking more control of events in their work situations.employers can make attempts to set the work environment up in such a way as to reduce work related consequences, while the employee and his/her family can take steps to address the non work and stress related consequences.management should be encouraged to try various interventions such as programs and flexible working hours as to minimize. 9. CONCLUSIONS Today Absenteeism and turnover is one of universal problem mostly existing in Asian organization. This research will help to those organizations who want to take steps to control employee turnover and absenteeism and also give valuable suggestions like increasing the salary package, providing various allowances & incentives to the employees and management should set up a separate council and analyze the reasons for absenteeism, which can reduce absenteeism rate in future. Hence, organizations must also provide a good working environment and salary package in order to retain its employees editor@iaeme.com
