2 WHSC TRAINING... The right thing. The right way. Supporting quality training We all know when workplace hazards go uncontrolled workers, their families and communities suffer. We also know Ontario health and safety laws are designed to help prevent this suffering. Chief among these laws are many employer responsibilities to safeguard workers, including the responsibility to train workers, their representatives and supervisors. But not all health and safety training is created equal. Often what passes for training (lectures, videos, posters and online resources) is not training at all. Hence why workplace reps, researchers, health and safety experts, courts and governments have worked to help establish minimum training standards. And why governments of all stripes have long supported the Workers Health & Safety Centre, Ontario s only designated occupational health and safety training organization dedicated to developing and delivering quality training. Training for prevention By law employers must provide general and job-specific health and safety training. These obligations include, but are not limited to, training addressing the following issues. Globally-harmonized WHMIS: Employers must complete transition from original WHMIS to Globally-harmonized (GHS) WHMIS by December 1, To achieve this, employers must ensure workers exposed or who may be exposed to a hazardous product participate in GHS-WHMIS training. Working at heights: Ontario health and safety law was altered in 2015 requiring employers to ensure workers on construction projects complete an approved working at heights (WAH) training program. This training is valid for three years from the date of successful completion. For those who complied in 2015, newly approved WAH refresher training is now required for continued compliance. JHSC : Critical to the functioning of a workplace health and safety program is the competency of joint health and safety committee (JHSC) members, including certified members. To this end, employers must ensure certified members complete approved Basic (Part I) and Workplace Hazard-Specific (Part II) Training. With but a few exceptions, employers must also ensure certified members complete approved refresher training every three years. Other training requirements must address: l Worker Awareness l Supervisor Awareness l Safe Lockout-Tagout l Confined Space Entry l Needlesticks and Sharps l Transportation of Dangerous Goods l Workplace Violence and Harassment l Mobile Equipment Operator Competency.
