1 A STUDY ON QUALITY OF WORK LIFE AMONG THE EMPLOYEES IN BHEL, TRICHY S.ARTHI* Dr.KVR.RAJANDRAN** *Final Year MBA, Department of Management Studies, Periyar Maniammai University, Thanjavur, India. **Associate Professor, Department of Management Studies, Periyar Maniammai University, Thanjavur, India. ABSTRACT The study deals with the quality of work life among the employees in BHEL, Trichy. Sampling size were 151 employees. The data were collected from questionnaire method.pilot study was used, after evaluating it questionnaire is being given to the sample respondents for data collection.tools were used for analysis the data are K-Means cluster,f-test ANOVA. The result revealed that there is positive significant relationship in quality of work life overall benefits provided to day shift and night shift employees in BHEL. Key words: Quality of work life, working conditions, work environment, India, Tamil Nadu, k-means cluster, F- test ANOVA 1.INTRODUCTION Quality of work life refered as favourableness or unfavourableness of a job environment for the people working in a organization.quality of work life include the task, the internal work environment, external environment within the organization adminstrative system and relationship between the on the job and off the job. It is associated with job satisfaction, job involvement, motivation, productivity,work conditions, health, safety, job security, balance between work and non-work life.. Quality of work life means providing good conditions at work place to motivate employees to perform to their fullest potential.motivating work environment makes the employee to have a positive attitude towards their job and the organization. Satisfying work environment includes good interpersonal relations and proper communication among employees, superiors and subordinates leading to teamwork. Accepted levels of working conditions, good interpersonal skills and transparency in the system make the employee feel better and contribute to the best of them for the growth of organization.and then the work environment encouraging autonomy and freedom for doing a job will increase employees creativity and innovation skills. So that they can adopt difference optimal methods to best utilize the resources. The research mainly focused on major components related to quality of work life (i) adequate and fair compensation (ii) working conditions are healthy and safe (iii) the opportunity to use and develop the capacity (iv) the opportunity for sustaniable growth (v) social integration within the organization (vi) 30

2 constitutionalism in the work (vii) balance between work life and non-work life (viii) social relevance in working life. 2.LITERATURE REVIEW: Chandranshu Sinha(2012) undertaken the study about explored the factors of quality of working-life experience in organizations. The factors are used to analysis of the component quality of work life experience led to the extraction of 3 factors from various organizations. The three factors were relationship-sustenance orientation, futuristic and professional orientation, and self-deterministric and systemic orientation. Bindurani(2014) analyzed the several aspects of quality of work life including working conditions,safety measures, welfare practices, career development opportunities.and variable which focused on outcomes, such as job satisfaction and mental health with their emphasis on the impact of work on individual. The result revealed that the employees in general satisfied with different measures of quality of work life programs in the organization Vijayalakshmi(2013) pointed out the opinion regarding the quality of work life of the employees were collected through the questionnaire with 150 respondents.for analyzing the data chi-square analysis, correlation analysis and one way- ANOVA was done.the study concluded that an appropriate working condition, interpersonal relationship, career growth, work life balance, satisfaction levels, which ensure the overall organisation performance. 3.RESEARCH METHODOLOGY : 3.1 Objectives of the study To analyze the factor that affecting the relationship between the management and employees To analyze the working conditions in the company To measure the level of satisfaction with work environment 3.2 RESEARCH DESIGN: Descriptive research design: descriptive research studies are those studies concerned with describing the characteristic of a particular group. Such studies are concerned with specific predictions, with narration of facts and characteristics concerning group or situation. 31

In that out of 100%, 66% are falls under workers category of only two department[hpbp-high pressure boiler plant and SSTP-Seamless steel tube plant] i.e. the number of workers are From that total population, due to time limitation only 151 samples were chosen from the manufacturing unit Sampling techniques: Convenient sampling Data collection: Through the questionnaire method primary data has been collected among the employees of BHEL plant Trichy Tools for analysis: K-Means cluster, F-Test ANOVA. 4. DATA ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION 4.1 Reliability test Table 4.1 Cronbach's Alpha No. of Items Before conducting the actual data collection, to ensure the response by the respondents,a pilot study was used. After evaluating it questionnaire is being given to the sample respondents for data collection. The above table 4.1shows that reliability cofficients for Quality of work life was more than 0.60 which is an acceptable value, It, implies that the questionnaire can be given to respondents for further test 32

4 4.2 K-Means clusters: Table 4.2 Number of cases ineach cluster Cluster Valid Inference: Missing.000 The table 4.2 explained that cluster no. 1 recorded as respondents which falls on strongly agree, agree category and cluster no. 2 is recorded as a respondents which falls on strongly disagree, disagree. Cluster no. 1 is high(97),cluster no. 2 is low(54). So quality of work life among the employees in BHEL is good. Because most of employees are belongs to cluster 1. The result revealed that majority of workers indicated as strongly agree and agree, which implies that workers were having strongly relationship in workplace. 4.3 F-Test ANOVA F-Test two sample for variance Ho= There is no significant in quality of work life among the Day shift and Night shift employees at BHEL. H1= There is significant in quality of work life among the Day shift and Night shift employees at BHEL. The value of F is The calculated value of F-ratio is greater value than the table values. F-value 3.86 is greater than from table value.so Ho- The null hypothesis was rejected.h1-alternative hypothesis was accepted. Therefore it is concluded there is positive significant in quality of work life overall benefits provided to day shift and night shift employees in BHEL. 33

5 CONCLUSION Quality is no more a specialized word but has become a necessary and a must work for the best survival. Quality of human inputs is the greatest assest to an organization.quality of work life is retain the talented employees in the organization.this help in building the good relationship between employees and organization.the result revealed from the K-Means cluster that majority of workers indicated as strongly agree and agree which implies that workers were having strongly relationship in the workplace and also employees are satisfied with work environment,working conditions and work life balance..and then there is positively significant relationship in Quality of work life.so overall quality of work life in BHEL is good.
