2 From the Chair of Trustees Thank you for your interest in becoming the new Chief Executive of the Icon, the Institute for Conservation. Icon is a charity which brings together those with a passion for the care of cultural heritage. Heritage is a topic of great public interest and stories about the conservation of objects are regularly seen in the news. As a registered charity our aims are to raise awareness of the cultural and social value of caring for heritage and to champion high standards of its conservation. One of the Chief Executive s main roles will be to promote those standards and Icon s part in delivering them. CONTENTS Icon is also the professional body for conservation, administering the industry s standards and training and the majority of members are drawn from the professional conservation world. Icon was formed in 2005 by the merger of five conservation membership organisations: the Care of Collections Forum, the Institute of Paper Conservation, the Photographic Materials Conservation Group, the Scottish Society for Conservation and Restoration and the United Kingdom Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works. Icon has grown and developed since then and we now have nearly 3,000 individual and organisational members, not only professional conservators and conservation scientists, but many others who share a commitment to improving understanding of and access to our cultural heritage. Most of our members are UK-based but many also work internationally From the Chair of Trustees General Purpose of Role Icon s vision is for cultural heritage to be valued and accessible and for its future to be enhanced and safeguarded by excellence in conservation. The Chief Executive has worked closely with the Board to write Icon s current five year strategy, to manifest the vision, of which we are now in the second year. Our annual operating plans and budgets are designed to implement that strategy and measure its effectiveness. The Board is composed of professional conservators and a number of external co-opted members and it provides an informed and engaged body to support the Chief Executive in both its wider charitable aims and in leading the profession. 09 As well as the broad range of skills expected in this role, including those to lead the staff and work closely with a well-established senior management team, you will be expected to demonstrate a real interest in the nature and values of conservation as championed by Icon. Leading the sector to develop Trailblazer Apprenticeships; partnering with V&A on a new technician s qualification; leading the sector on a National Conservation Education & Skills Strategy while also campaigning to save higher education courses under threat. 11 Running the Icon Conservation Awards with operational partners and sponsors; bringing Icon s special interest groups together for major triennial conferences, and supporting groups with their own conferences and setting up four new cross-disciplinary networks. 5 Role Profile Job Title: Chief Executive Location: Icon s London Office Responsible to: Board of Trustees, normally through its Chair Responsible for: 3 managers & 2 officers (see chart) Hours and Terms: Full-time, open-ended contract Salary: 55-60,000 per annum plus 6% pension contribution General Purpose of Role The Chief Executive will drive the development and delivery of Icon s strategic objectives in line with its vision, mission and values. They will provide dynamic leadership for the organisation ensuring that it delivers its charitable objects and is a sustainable Icon Chief Executive 8 and effective organisation. The Chief Executive will embody the values of the organisation, championing conservation for the benefit of the public and its members under the direction of the Icon Board of Trustees. 6 The Main Responsibilities of the Chief Executive Person Specification 1. With the Board of Trustees, lead the development, delivery, monitoring and review of Icon s Strategy, ensuring that it corresponds to its charitable purpose and meets the expectations of its members. 2. Manage the overall operation and strengthen governance of the organisation, ensuring that Icon maintains appropriate legal and operational policy. 3. Maximise existing income generation streams and build new sources of revenue to enable Icon to achieve its goals and maintain a sustainable organisation. 4. Increase the number of Icon members both in the UK and internationally. 5. Direct and support staff, ensuring effective performance and talent management and maintain guidelines for staff to support welfare and the efficient use of human resources. 6. Take operational responsibility for the planning, budgeting and control of finances as well as compliance with standards and safeguards, under the direction of the Finance Committee and Board of Trustees. 7. Raise the profile of Icon and of conservation through effective communications in a wide range of media and act as a persuasive spokesperson for the organisation and its mission. 8. Build Icon as a strong outward and forwardlooking organisation that is an influential, credible and cohesive voice which advocates widely on issues related to preservation, protection, care and conservation of the cultural heritage. 9. Develop a strong policy base to ensure that Icon is the authoritative source of information on conservation in practice, policy, and the profession. 10. Champion excellence and high professional standards in the practice of conservation through the development and delivery of Icon accreditation, training and education. 11. Develop and sustain effective and productive partnerships with a range of stakeholders to support the delivery of Icon s strategy. Training, experience, and qualifications Experience in developing successful partnerships for growth and income generation. Good degree or equivalent qualification and a demonstrable interest in conservation. A minimum of five years experience at a managerial level. Desirable if two years were in a heritage, cultural or membership organisation, professional institute or similar sector. Experience of strategic development, delivery and evaluation. Experience of working with a Board of Trustees. Track record of leading change, motivating and developing staff and creating effective teams. Experience of working with a diverse range of stakeholders. Track record of securing funding or developing revenue streams to support organisational goals. Technical skills Financial, business planning and general management skills. Organisational and time management skills. Ability to gather, structure and present information. Written and oral communication skills. Interpersonal skills Leadership skills with personal commitment and professional credibility. Relationship building skills, able to command confidence and communicate effectively. Diplomacy and ability to manage sensitive situations and conflicts. Notes Annual objectives will be set for this role which will be used to monitor and evaluate performance within the appraisal system. This job description may be subject to review in the light of the developing organisation and in consultation with the post holder. In common with all staff, the candidate will be expected to comply with all Icon s policies and procedures; to do all that is reasonably practicable to maintain a safe and healthy work environment, having regard to appropriate risk assessments and ensuring compliance with the organisation s and statutory requirements and to draw attention to their training needs and those of colleagues. The candidate must be willing and able to travel frequently in the UK, occasionally overseas and occasionally to attend events and other off-site functions during evenings and weekends.
