1 SCHOOL: Barclay Secondary School, Waltham Forest, London, E5 Opening 2017 POST: SCALE ALLOWANCE: Deputy Head Teacher L13 L17 additional allowance for an exceptional candidate RESPONSIBLE TO: Advisory Body Head Teacher, Executive Principal, Director of Schools and the Parental Barclay Secondary School is a new 8FE school built on 11 acres of grounds in the Lea Valley and at the heart of the Waltham Forest and Hackney communities. Serving the vibrant and multi-cultural East London area, Barclay Secondary School will be a non-denominational, co-educational centre of excellence offering a STEM-based curriculum to the students and families it is set up to serve. Starting with 208 students in Year 7, the school will grow until fully occupied in Barclay Secondary School will be the extension of the existing outstanding primary provision in place and will offer a seamless transition from KS2 to KS3 and beyond and ensuring that all students leave with real, positive life chances at the end of their secondary phase of education. The Trust is rightly proud to lead this parent-driven demand for a new option at the secondary phase based on the same outstanding education and home-school contract in place at all our primaries. The Trust is looking for a proven secondary leader capable of working to set up, develop and lead the new school and team through the interim phase of the construction programme and into the new build in April This once-in-a-career opportunity requires a level of passion, commitment and energy which will naturally limit the field of possible candidates - and the Trust is fully committed to finding the deputy head teacher who best articulates and can evidence how these qualities and their own drive and focus will ensure this investment in education locally is the beacon for quality we expect it to be. The particular duties assigned to this post are set out in the current school teachers pay and conditions document. In addition, particular duties are set out below. These duties may be reviewed and amended in consultation with the post holder, in the light of any changes in the requirements and priorities within the school or the Lion Education Trust partnership of schools. Variations in the duties of Deputy Head Teacher are common occurrences and cannot in themselves justify a re-grading of the post. As a Deputy Head Teacher within The Lion Education Trust, you will be required to undertake duties and responsibilities associated with Lion Education and Lion Academy Trust Schools. Main purposes of the job This job description is subject to the general conditions of service for a Deputy Head Teacher as set out in the current school Teachers Pay and Condition Document. Shaping the Future In the pre-opening phase, the Deputy Head Teacher will work closely with the Head Teacher, Executive Principal and Director of Schools to: 1

2 Support and where required, lead on the recruitment of the wider team and ensure all induction, systems and processes around the on-boarding of new staff are completed in a timely and appropriate manner; Work to support the final design of key elements such as FF&E, ICT and services are correctly defined and installed in time for opening; Ensure that the integration of Barclay Secondary Free School into the Trust s systems is complete and that the integration of finance, performance data and standards is clearly defined and understood; Lead on the definition of the timetable and resource allocations for the first cohort including any off-site provision of specialist teaching requirements which may arise; Support the provision of a personal and targeted introduction to every new starter and their families to ensure that the decision to choose Barclay Secondary Free School is a rewarding and valuable one; and Be part of the outward facing embodiment of the new school to the local community, wider family of schools and other interested parties as we move through to opening. Once open, the Deputy Head Teacher will work closely with the Head Teacher, Executive Principal and Director of Schools to: Champion and maintain the desired ethos and support the provision of the educational vision and direction that secures outstanding teaching, successful learning and achievement by all pupils. Secure the commitment of the whole school community to the vision and direction of the Lion Education Trust To incrementally build on the current foundations and platforms at the primaries within the Trust to continue to drive school improvement, the development of innovative practice and to lead on the evolution of the school to maintain an outstanding level of provision across all aspects of the school and to ensure that the transition from KS2 to KS3 is a seamless one Present a coherent and accurate account of the school s performance in a form appropriate to a range of audiences including Parental Advisory Body members, the local community, Ofsted and others, to enable them to play their part effectively. Lead by example, provide inspiration and motivation and embody vision and purpose in the leadership of the school and collaboration for the pupils, staff, Parental Advisory Body members, parents and carers. Ensure that all those involved in the school are committed to its aims and are accountable for meeting long, medium and short-term objectives to secure outstanding school improvement. Motivate all concerned with the school to create a shared culture and positive climate and to provide the logistical and multi-faceted leadership required to drive a larger-than-average Secondary school and its community forward Continue to place the Lion Education Trust School at the heart of its community by attending events throughout the year, engaging in activities that will promote the Lion Education Trust School within the community. Strategic Direction and Development Support the work undertaken by the Head Teacher in collaboration with the Trust Executive 2

3 Team to develop the strategic view for the partnership and to analyse and plan for the future needs and further development of the school. Ensure that the management, organisation and administration of the school support the vision and aims of the school. Monitor, evaluate and review the effect of policies, priorities and targets of the school and ensure that the leadership of the school continues meet and exceed targets set by the Trust for the School and the highest possible rating defined by the regulatory frameworks the school and Trusts operate within. Leading & Managing Lead, motivate, support, challenge and develop staff to secure outstanding outcomes for all pupils by holding all staff in teaching, support and operational roles to account for the roles they occupy Secure and sustain outstanding teaching and learning throughout the school and to monitor and evaluate the quality of teaching and standards of pupil achievement, using benchmarks and target setting for improvement. Ensure clarity and consistency of interactions across all teams and operational layers within the school to create a culture of high expectations, accountability and collaborative responsibility for outcomes Motivate and enable staff to carry out their respective roles to the highest standards, through high quality continuing professional development based on an assessment of needs. Provide clear leadership through the application of quality driven data capture, analysis and the targeting of resources by year, class and per-pupil as required Support the Implementation and sustaining of effective systems for the management of staff performance, incorporating targets for teachers, targets relating to students achievement and personal professional development. Plan, allocate, support and evaluate work undertaken by groups, teams and individuals, ensuring a clear delegation of tasks and devolution of responsibilities and holding staff to account for outcomes and impact. Maximise the contribution of staff to improve the quality of education and care provided and ensure that constructive working relationships are formed between staff, pupils, and parents/carers. Ensure that all staff have access to appropriate professional development opportunities. Support and deliver the arrangements for appraisal/performance management of the Lion Education Trust School Staff and in the setting of appropriate objectives and take responsibility for promoting your own professional development. Efficient and effective development of staff and resources in line with the Lion Education Trust s strategic plans and financial contexts Manage, monitor and review the range, quality, quantity and use of all available resources in order to improve the quality of education, improve pupil achievement, ensure efficiency and secure value for money. 3

4 Manage and organise accommodation efficiently and effectively to ensure that it meets the needs of the curriculum and health and safety regulations. Advice the Trust s Executive Team on appropriate priorities for expenditure, and ensure effective administration and control. Accountability Be accountable to the Head Teacher and local Parental Advisory Body for the efficiency, financial process, statutory expectations and effectiveness of the school Provide information, objective advice and support to the Trust s Executive Team and local Parental Advisory Body to enable responsibilities for securing effective teaching and learning and improved standards of achievement to be met. Present a coherent and accurate account of the school s performance in a form appropriate to a range of audiences including parents, Parental Advisory Body members, the local community, Ofsted and the Trust s Executive Team, to enable them to play their part effectively. Plan for effective monitoring, evaluating and reviewing of plans to secure outstanding progress and school improvement, reporting regularly to the Trust s Executive Team and local Parental Advisory Body. Develop and monitor the school s self-evaluation processes, reporting regularly to the Trust s Executive Team and local Parental Advisory Body. Monitor and evaluate the school improvement plan reporting regularly to the Trust s Executive Team and local Parental Advisory Body. Provide any local, school and national data required by the Head Teacher to support either the Trust s Executive Team, the Parental Advisory Body or the Lion Education Trust. To think creatively and imaginatively about the school s development, to anticipate and resolve problems and to identify opportunities that will benefit students. There will be an annual review of the roles and responsibilities of members of The Lion Education Trust. This may result in changes to designated roles and responsibilities in line with the emerging priorities of The Lion Education Trust. This job description forms part of the contract of employment of the person appointed to the post. It reflects the position at the present time only and may be reviewed in negotiation with the employee in the future. The appointment is subject to the current conditions of employment in the School Teachers Pay and Conditions Document as they relate to Deputy Head Teachers. 4

5 Deputy Head Teacher Person Specification The post holder will be required to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people. A. Qualifications, Experience and Professional Development Qualified Teacher Status Evidence of post-qualification study and continuing professional development Working towards the NPQH qualification Professional Development: Other training: On-going evidence of post-npqh study and practice development Has successfully undertaken NCSL/CWDC-approved safer recruitment training A minimum of three years experience as a Deputy Head Teacher in a similar setting secondary provision or comparable institutions where a clear narrative of positive impact on outcomes and staffing retention and recruitment can be evidenced A proven track record of successful senior leadership and school improvement in the Secondary phase Experience in two or more institutions covering aspects of curriculum, pastoral, budget and resource management Teaching Experience Evidence of outstanding teaching experience in a Secondary school with further evidence of practice development across all key-stages.
