Under the Qualifications (Education & Training) Act, 1999, FETAC now has responsibility for making awards previously made by NCVA. Module Descriptor Interior Design Professional Practice Level 6 N

2 1 Module Title Interior Design Professional Practice 2 Module Code N Level 6 4 Credit Value 1 credit 5 Purpose This module is designed to develop the learners knowledge of the professional environment of the interior designer with emphasis on legislation, regulations, business organisation and presentation skills 6 Preferred Entry Level 7 Special Requirements Level 5 Certificate, or equivalent qualifications and/or relevant life and work experiences. None. 8 General Aims Learners who successfully complete this module will: 8.1 develop a knowledge and understanding of regulations and legislation relevant to interior designers 8.2 understand the structure of relevant business organisations 8.3 develop a knowledge and understanding of relevant contracts, tendering, cost planning, programming and project management 8.4 be aware of the ethical standards which interior designers should maintain when working within the industry 8.5 be conscious of personal presentation and display presentation skills within a professional context 8.6 demonstrate an understanding of the impact of design on the environment 8.7 present an organised portfolio of interior design work to a professional standard. 1

3 9 Units The specific learning outcomes are grouped into 4 units. Unit 1 Unit 2 Unit 3 Unit 4 Regulations and Legislation Presentation Skills Business Organisations, Contracts and Procurement Ethics and Responsibilities of Professionals 10 Specific Learning Outcomes Unit 1 Regulations and Legislation Learners should be able to: explain the broad principles of legislation relating to Copyright, Design and Patents and the Consumer understand how Planning and Building Regulations affect the Interior Designer understand the application of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Construction) regulations and the duties/responsibilities of all persons involved in design projects apply Safety, Health and Welfare Regulations to a large interior design contract Unit 2 Presentation Skills Learners should be able to: produce a coherent and structured presentation portfolio of work demonstrate professional standards in integrating a combination of traditional and electronic presentation techniques make a presentation of a completed project suitable for a client employing a combination of traditional and electronic presentation methods 2

4 Unit 3 Business Organisations, Contracts and Procurement Learners should be able to: understand the structure of and the roles of the different members of the design team understand tendering, cost plans and fee structures produce a programme of work implement a programme of work Unit 4 Ethics and Responsibilities of Professionals Learners should be able to: outline the responsibilities of the interior designer in their industry to the various parties to include clients, the public, designers, colleagues and the profession itself provide examples of various situations in which codes of ethics (personal or corporate) might be required understand the importance of business etiquette show awareness of responsibilities to the environment understand environmental terms with particular reference to the interior design industry demonstrate how green design can be incorporated into interior design 3

5 11 Portfolio of Assessment Please refer to the glossary of assessment techniques and the note on assessment principles at the end of this module descriptor. All assessment is carried out in accordance with FETAC regulations. Assessment is devised by the internal assessor, with external moderation by FETAC. Summary Assignments 60% Collection of Work 40% 11.1 Assignment The internal assessor will devise a brief that requires the candidate to produce two assignments which are research based. These assignments will be based on all units Collection of Work The internal assessor will devise guidelines for candidates on gathering a collection of work that demonstrates evidence of a range of specific learning outcomes. The project brief will integrate with other level 6 interior design modules. The collection will include project based portfolio of drawings and associated documents 12 Grading Pass 50-64% Merit 65-79% Distinction % 4
