Improving knowledge, skills and performance Short Course Training & Development Programme 2010/11

MANAGEMENT & LEADERSHIP Essential Management Skills 13 & 14 October 2010 This course is aimed at anyone currently (or soon expecting to be) responsible for managing staff. Designed to provide the foundation skills and knowledge for effective management, the main aim is to equip delegates to lead and motivate people to perform to the best of their ability. The content covers a wide variety of management and leadership skills such as motivation, objective setting, performance appraisal, communication, giving feedback, staff development, delegation, teamwork and personal management. The course is sufficiently flexible to meet the individual needs of participants and is highly interactive using structured exercises, small group working and role-plays to turn knowledge into practice. Effective Project Management 20 & 21 October 2010 The principles common to managing projects, irrespective of size are: planning, organising, monitoring & controlling and closing. This intensive workshop presents a comprehensive overview of the necessary management & operational principles, procedures, tools and techniques required for effective project management including a range of associated management skills. It acknowledges the fact that very few people have the luxury of managing a single project at any one time, and very few projects have a team that are dedicated 100% of their time to the project. The course is aimed at anyone working within project environments including team members, project leaders and managers. The aim is to provide a practical and readily usable toolkit to give participants greater ability and confidence in managing and delivering projects within scope, on time and within budget. This is achieved through a series of tutorials, self-assessment exercises and team workshops. Coaching & Delegating Skills 3 & 4 November 2010 Coaching and delegating are two essential management competencies that directly impact upon a manager s ability to achieve results through people. If you manage others and are responsible for their development in the workplace this course will help you unlock their potential, learn to rely on others and empower them to achieve success. The course is designed for managers, supervisors and team leaders at all levels and with varying degrees of experience who wish to increase the performance of staff by applying these two key skills. The aim is to enhance participants knowledge, skills and competencies in relation to the way they manage their ability to create a learning culture within their organisation. This interactive workshop is facilitated using lecture-style delivery, group discussion, individual and team-based case studies and practical exercises. Leading & Managing Effective Teams 25 November 2010 We all exist or participate in teams in some way or other. The essence of management is leadership of others and excellent managers know how to lead their teams so that they can achieve the organisation s goals productively. Team leaders are at the heart of any successful organisation - some are born but the majority need trained. This dynamic and highly participative workshop focuses on leading the team to achieve. It is designed to provoke fresh thinking, plus provide the skills and the desire to maximise performance levels in both the individual and the team. The course is primarily intended for team and project leaders, managers and supervisors who are serious about their responsibilities for planning, co-ordinating and leading people effectively. Essential Management Skills 16 & 17 February 2011 Managing Business Improvement Projects 16 March 2011 This workshop is for those involved in any form of strategy or business change project. Strategic plans and well defined targets are critically important for any organisation. This interactive workshop provides a focus on the implementation, translating business requirements into future projects and delivering results. The workshop tackles important issues such as defining project objectives, planning, estimating, managing risk, problem solving, managing change, and clear communication. It will focus on the application of simple effective project management techniques to the implementation of business goals, to ensure that the work gets done, that customers and managers expectations are met, that team members have a clear view of the work expected of them and a way of communicating progress with everyone involved. Managing Change at Work 30 March 2011 The current pace of change and the unpredictable economic climate is presenting tougher challenges than ever before. Many organisations have learned to their cost that just announcing the need for change is no guarantee of successful implementation. This course introduces a range of change management practices, techniques and tools that ensure your change is successful - whether planning to reorganise roles and responsibilities, introduce new systems, change work processes, or implement strategic change. It will also explore why people resist change and show how to provide strong leadership and a motivating climate. The right approach coupled with competent management is the winning combination that can lead to hard and quantifiable results. The programme will cover practical approaches to implementing change through the use of case study scenarios, and individual and group exercises. Effective Project Management 11 & 12 May 2011 Managing People in Projects 1 & 2 June 2011 The success of a project is often determined by the project manager s ability to communicate effectively, lead a team, negotiate, and deal with conflict. Managing People in Projects is an interactive two-day workshop specifically designed to meet the challenges faced by project managers on a daily basis. The workshop focuses on effective communication skills, team motivation, influence and dealing with conflict. This is achieved using case studies, group discussion, selfassessment exercises and team activities. This workshop provides project managers with the personal and interpersonal skills they need to supplement their technical project management skills for successful project delivery. Essential Management Skills 8 & 9 June 2011 Influencing & Negotiation Skills 16 June 2011 The ability to create influence and negotiate for a successful agreement is a core skill for everyone involved in any type of organisation. Many interactions in a professional environment involve a series of negotiations whose outcome could be the difference between success and failure. Effective negotiation skills help to create solutions where two parties are attempting to reach agreement where there are areas of both common ground and divergence. This practical workshop combines the science of influence with the process of negotiating: preparing, investigating, proposing, bargaining and closing. Delegates will learn and develop the skills required to create influence and negotiate for a successful agreement. The workshop uses group discussion, self-assessment exercises and team activities to develop the participant s ability to create lasting collaborative solutions.

COMMUNICATION & DEVELOPMENT Speaking & Presenting with Confidence 9 November 2010 We may not win a contract because of a good presentation, said a wise presenter, but we certainly lose contracts because of bad ones. People are asked to put over ideas and information at meetings and to potential customers all the time. Focusing on the key requirements for developing and delivering presentations, this lively course shows how to build a rapport with the audience and deliver a professional presentation or talk, with impact and enthusiasm. Above all, the course helps delegates to gain the confidence to speak more fluently, effectively and successfully. It is aimed at anyone who currently makes or needs to make excellent presentations - for the inexperienced, the discussion and practical exercises will help to build confidence, and for the seasoned presenter the course will reinforce good practice. Technical Writing with Impact 10 November 2010 This course will benefit anyone working in a technical environment to improve communication - both within the organisation and with external customers and suppliers - by presenting accurate and wellstructured reports in a clear and concise style. The practical workshop uses tutor input, discussion and group exercises to give delegates the knowledge, skills and confidence to apply the principles of good technical writing (such as reports, proposals, specifications, or any other technical document) whether for technical or non-technical readers. This course will benefit staff from all disciplines: technicians, engineers, scientists, project leaders, surveyors, technical managers, and all others who make an input to the technical writing process. Successful Proposal Writing 11 November 2010 It is increasingly necessary to follow a bid or tender process to win business and submit applications for funding future projects. This course encourages delegates to analyse their own and their readers objectives, to focus on decision makers requirements and to identify how to pitch their proposal accordingly. It is run as a workshop with tutor input, discussion and individual/group exercises. Topics covered will include: selecting material for impact; deciding on suitable document structures; presenting the organisation s credentials; drafting a winning summary and a convincing covering letter. It will help you to gain the confidence to create proposals that are persuasive and get results. This course will benefit managers, sales professionals, bid managers and technical writers who have to contribute to or write bids or applications for funding. Productive Meeting Skills 18 November 2010 Running productive meetings is a core skill for any manager. Professionally managed meetings can have a massive impact on team motivation and effectiveness. This workshop helps delegates to structure meetings, invite the appropriate people, facilitate and chair discussions, manage conflict and lead the meeting to a specific outcome with agreed actions. The practical workshop is facilitated using group discussion, individual exercises and team activities. This course will benefit anyone who leads or chairs formal or informal meetings and wants to structure them to be more productive. It will also benefit people attending meetings on a regular basis, enabling them to actively participate and maximise their contribution. Radical Time Management 24 November 2010 Notes and checklists, calendars and appointment books, project timetables and reminder systems - should managing time require so much time? And once the training session is over, how many of these tools do we actually employ to effect in our working lives? Statistics tell a grim tale: most Time Management training is ineffective and therefore literally (and ironically) a waste of time. So this workshop will take a radically different track. We will focus on two proven techniques that yield maximum results for time-poor managers and business people. The first is the revolutionary 80/20 Principle ; the second is the Quadrant 2 system developed by Stephen Covey. Between them, these ideas will radically alter how you view and use time - from a quantity to a quality perspective, from spending time to investing time. Assertiveness and Workplace Confidence 2 & 3 March 2011 The realities of modern work life - flat structures, tough workloads and the need to exert influence across traditional boundaries - ensure that assertiveness skills are not an optional extra. Aggression is unacceptable; passivity is ineffective. In this workshop you will learn a powerful set of techniques and how to use them in specific workplace scenarios, such as when negotiating or influencing, or when giving and receiving feedback. There will be special attention to the issue of communication in work, focusing on how delegates can build up a repertoire of assertive non-verbal communication styles and employ assertive power words and persuasive phrases. The workshop - informal and practical with group discussions, roleplays and exercises - will culminate with guidelines for improving your confidence and presence at work. Effective Writing Skills for Business 6 April 2011 Good written communication is essential for success in all aspects of professional life. This workshop combines instruction with interactive exercises to help participants develop persuasive business writing skills. It focuses on planning efficient document structures, handling language well and achieving the right style and tone to project a professional image and maximise the impact on readers. The programme will include practice in drafting various kinds of documents and is aimed at anyone for whom effective professional communication is essential - to communicate information or instructions to others, including those who need to write clear and concise reports and discussion papers. This course is intended for people working in an administrative, managerial, technical or sales capacity. Speaking & Presenting with Confidence 7 April 2011 Decision Making & Problem Solving 26 May 2011 Creative thinking is the ability to step out of the box and look at things differently. This outlook develops the skill to discover new ideas and new solutions to problems. This practical workshop provides participants with creative thinking skills and techniques to help unlock creativity and innovation, and transform ideas into reality. The course provides practical problem solving training, introducing creative thinking models and strategies that will challenge you and help to review existing perspectives and consider alternative ways of working. The course is interactive and entertaining and will offer new skills and processes to gain a better understanding of your own potential and ultimately of your business. Critical Conversations 15 June 2011 What stops us from having that difficult conversation? The one where you have to tell someone that their performance is not up to scratch, or the one where you know the other person has a different point of view from you? And how effective are those conversations when we do have them? Does the other person change their behaviour? Do they understand where you are coming from and how important the issue is? And how much does it cost the business in having ineffective conversations, or worse still, avoiding them all together? In this workshop learn how to prepare for the conversation you need to have, learn what stops you from having an effective conversation and learn how to overcome it. A simple technique, will save your business time and money. An interactive day with role play and practice. Bring your own case study (a conversation you need to have) for maximum benefit.

QUALITY MANAGEMENT Process Auditing - Principles & Practice 1 & 2 December 2010 No management system can fulfil its potential unless it is effectively audited. This course, for new and experienced auditors, demonstrates how to adopt the process-based approach to auditing, reviewing the role of the auditor and conducting internal audits in a way that adds value to the organisation. Participants gain the necessary skills to manage, plan, prepare and conduct effective and efficient process audits - resulting in improved bottom-line performance. The first day of the course provides an in-depth understanding of the process-based approach and the techniques of auditing (which is the basis of ISO 9001). The second day is highly participative and involves performing live audits to put learning into practice. The tools & techniques are equally useful for those carrying out external supplier assessments as well as audits of other management systems. Business Process Mapping for Improvement 9 & 10 March 2011 This course provides a range of tools & techniques to enable organisations to improve their performance. Process mapping requires people within the organisation to look at their processes, not only in a detailed manner, but also from a broader perspective. The course uses the process-based approach in a way that can be applied within any type and size of business or organisation. By the end of the course, delegates will be able to identify, define, map, analyse, manage and improve process efficiency and effectiveness within their organisations - whether it be for increasing customer satisfaction, lowering costs, eliminating waste, reducing process times, or increasing quality. It is a highly practical and interactive course that is suitable for participants, from any background, who want or need to understand the significant benefits that process mapping and management can bring to the business. Statistical Process Control (SPC) 20 April 2011 Most companies operate in markets where it is vital that they are competitive and profitable - this is achieved through effective and efficient processes which can only be achieved when processes are properly controlled. SPC is an important tool in the measurement, analysis, improvement and control of processes, in both manufacturing and service environments. This course provides an understanding of the principles and techniques of statistical methods covering both attribute & variable data and control charts, including process capability analysis and other problem solving techniques. It incorporates practical workshop exercises to reinforce the learning experience. As this course provides an introduction to SPC, it is suitable for anyone wishing to explore how the techniques can be applied in their own environment. Failure Mode & Effects Analysis (FMEA) 21 April 2011 Prevention is always better than correction! FMEA is a systematic method for identifying and investigating the potential likelihood of failure of a product or service, and the effects that such failures may have on customers. The technique provides an accurate, numerically ranked analysis in order to reduce or eliminate potential design or process problems. Through the recognition and evaluation of potential areas of failure, an organisation can identify and manage preventive actions and therefore minimise the risk of a product/ process failure. The course includes a practical application of the technique to reinforce understanding. It is aimed at anyone involved in the design or specification of products, processes or services. Integrated Management System 5 May 2011 The aim of this course is to provide an understanding of how to implement an Integrated Management System that combines ISO 9001 (for Quality) and/or ISO (for Environmental) and/or OHSAS (for Occupational Health & Safety) systems. It will look at the PAS 99 standard - requirements for integration - and the benefits resulting in a better business focus, more efficiency, less bureaucracy, reduced costs and a simplified approach to the management of existing systems. The course demonstrates how an organisation can develop an IMS and associated documentation in order to avoid duplication. By the end of the course participants will be able to recognise the similarities between the three main standards and identify features in their business management systems which can be integrated. This practical course includes tutorials, discussions and facilitated workshop exercises. Process Auditing - Principles & Practice 22 & 23 June 2011 On-Site Process Auditing In-house, subject to requirement On-site mentoring and coaching in the practical application of auditing techniques for process improvement is available for those who have completed the course on Process Auditing - Principles & Practice. This additional training & support will help participants to identify key processes and improvement opportunities within their own organisations, such as: non-added value operations, lack of process measures, inefficient & ineffective process tasks, poor inter-departmental interfaces, etc. Opportunities identified may be incorporated into an improvement programme increasing efficiency & effectiveness, internal and external customer satisfaction, and ultimately the bottom line. Contact the CPD Office for further details. Other Topics A range of other subject areas are available, on public request or for in-house training, covering a broad spectrum of topics; some examples are listed below. 5 BUSINESS & ORGANISATION Finance for Non-Financial Managers 27 & 28 October 2010 Everything you do affects the organisation s financial performance and effective managers are those that can relate the impact of their decisions on financial results. This practical course helps participants become more effective by understanding the key financial areas encountered in today s organisations, business and project environments. Topics include: concepts and definitions; the profit and loss account; balance sheet; financial statements and ratio analyses; interpreting financial accounts and statements; preparing a meaningful budget; cash flow statements and forecasting; investment appraisal; and an introduction to the Balanced Scorecard in a financial context. The course is designed for managers and professionals - in non-financial roles, from public, private and voluntary sector organisations - who want to gain a clear understanding of the fundamentals of finance and the implications of decisions which they make. Fundamentals of Marketing 23 & 24 February 2011 This course will introduce participants to the major concepts of marketing. You will emerge with an invaluable template that will allow you to introduce these concepts within your area of responsibility. By the end of this course, you will be able to: undertake organisational specific situation analysis, develop realistic objectives, strategically market your services, incorporate control procedures, disseminate core marketing values and professionalise your offering. Aimed at private, public and third sector organisations, the course will benefit staff who are not marketing professionals themselves, but are involved with any aspect of the marketing function. It will equip you with knowledge that will significantly enhance what you do in the short, medium and long term. Managing the Marketing Mix 23 & 24 March 2011 The tools of the marketing trade are traditionally referred to as the marketing mix. This course will introduce you to that mix and how it has expanded and developed over the years into a template that can be adopted to suit any scenario or sector. By the end of this course you will fully appreciate and understand the following in straightforward, jargon free terms: how what you offer is actually defined, how consumption is classified in terms of location, what price is all about and what it is definitely not about, how to communicate this and more with efficiency and effectiveness and ultimately how people, processes and physical evidence complete the classic ingredients of the mix. Aimed at private, public and third sector organisations, the course will benefit all staff who are involved with a number of aspects of the marketing function. It will equip you with the necessary knowledge to significantly enhance the management of your marketing operations. Introduction to Bookkeeping & Accounting 31 March 2011 This course is primarily designed for those who are new to accounting and have responsibility for maintaining the accounting records - from small private businesses to voluntary or community sector organisations. This introductory course will provide participants with a better understanding of key accounting concepts and equip them with basic bookkeeping skills which can be readily applied to their organisation. Course topics include: accounting terminology, the accounting period, bookkeeping cycle - from source documentation through to preparing a trial balance, manual and computerised accounting record systems, and an introduction to Sage software. No prior knowledge of the subject is assumed. Bring a calculator. Managing Customer Experience 13 April 2011 The 21st century marketplace is brutally competitive. Recent research confirms that customer loyalty is more a result of how customers feel about doing business with you, rather than what they think about your products or services in a detached way. Businesses that provide satisfying service gain their customers loyalty in the form of repeat business and referrals - the holy grail of customer service. The most successful companies achieve this goal by managing the total customer experience. Customer Experience Management (CEM) is concerned with planning how you will not only meet, but exceed, both the rational and emotional needs of your customers. In this workshop you will gain an understanding of the building-blocks of a satisfying customer experience and create interactions that turn average customers into your campaigners. Balanced Scorecard 14 April 2011 As organisations become more customer focused and strive to deliver improved performance, the Balanced Scorecard (BS) provides managers with a comprehensive view of organisational performance. The BS provides a management system that reflects how the organisation is progressing on a wide range of measures, including: customer satisfaction, quality of service and speed of delivery. This course will take delegates step-by-step through the four key perspectives (of learning & continuous improvement, internal business processes, customers and financial measures) and show the process of creating a Scorecard. It will provide insight into its overall strategic aims and how to develop the perspectives into measurable objectives. Examples and case studies are used to illustrate its practical application. Strategic Management & Implementation 18 & 19 May 2011 This course is designed to provide participants with an overview of the strategic planning and management process and the ability to develop and use methods and tools to enable the implementation of strategies. Topics will explore how organisations position themselves with regards to their changing environments in order to gain and sustain competitive advantages. The range of management tools and standards (inc. Balanced Scorecard, EFQM, Investors in People, ISO 9001) are explored fully during the programme by an experienced practicing consultant who has used them to successfully support strategic planning and implementation across a broad range of organisations in both private and public sector. Finance for Non-Financial Managers 24 & 25 May 2011 Emotional Intelligence at Work 7 June 2011 Emotional Intelligence (EI) is more than a sign of the times or the latest management movement - although it is both. Work has changed to become more personal and pressurised than ever before. There is a recognition that raw brain-power is not enough and never has been. Studies prove that the difference between average and outstanding performers at work lies in the ability to blend IQ with EI. Are you aware of your emotional strengths and how you are perceived by others? Can you handle situations of stress and conflict? Do you possess the master aptitudes of motivation and resilience? Can you empathise with staff or customers? How is your social adeptness in networking scenarios? Is your leadership an inspiration or an impediment? These learnable skills - covered in this workshop - are vital and valued in the new world of work.

CERTIFICATE IN BUSINESS MANAGEMENT Introduction The University Certificate in Business Management provides a framework for recognition of achievement for those who attend short course training and subsequently complete work-based assignments. Not a formal course of study in the traditional sense, this flexible part-time certificate is designed for candidates to work towards the qualification by acquiring and accumulating credits from a range of optional short courses related to business and management. The aim is to encourage the habit of lifelong learning and continuing professional development among those who might initially attend short course training for specific work-related or personal reasons, and who then seek to progress this into a recognised University qualification. CATS points Each of the 2-day courses carries a weight of 10 CATS* points at Level 1, and 1-day courses carry 5 CATS points. Therefore, participants who attend courses and successfully complete written assignments can accumulate the requisite 60 CATS points to qualify for the Certificate in Business Management. Working towards CATS points is purely optional a delegate may attend short courses without having to complete any form of assessment. The courses for which credit is recognised for the purposes of this Certificate must be completed within a period of five years from registration on the first course to be assessed. * CATS stands for Credit Accumulation & Transfer Scheme. This is a national scheme that compares the size and level of different courses. The number of CATS points depends upon the duration of a course & scope of assessment, whereas the CATS level depends on the relative demand, complexity and/or depth of achievement, and autonomy of the learner in demonstrating that achievement. Courses available All the courses available through the Short Course Training & Development programme are accessible as part of the qualification. In addition, in-company bespoke training may also contribute towards attainment of the Certificate, or other comparable courses offered by approved external providers. Objectives The objective of the programme is to offer candidates a choice of business and management related course modules in order to enhance workplace performance. This is achieved through a range of: Transferable skills - which include how to take different approaches to problem-solving and decision-making, and to be able to communicate effectively. Cognitive skills - including being able to reflect on experience, apply knowledge to specific employment situations and understand the significance of lifelong learning and continuing professional development. Subject-specific skills - in which each of the short courses have their own independent learning outcomes. The knowledge and skills content will vary depending upon the specific combination of courses attended by the participants. Teaching & assessment methods Learning and teaching normally takes place within a small-group seminar and workshop format among participants who have secured funding and day-release from employers to acquire or develop specific knowledge and skills for personal and professional development. The courses utilise a variety of methods such as direct lecturing, individual exercises, interactive and participative teamwork, group discussion, case studies, role-play scenarios, report-back, etc. Apart from working towards the University Certificate, the process of earning CATS points may provide an additional challenge that can add to the enjoyment and achievement of having attended the course. Assessment is made through a written assignment which is intended to show how the participant has developed theoretical perspectives and applied the knowledge and skills to an actual work-based situation. This provides a formal mechanism to focus and implement the knowledge and skills and can take into account prior learning and experience. For 10 CATS points, full course attendance (2-day) and a 1,500-word assignment is required; for 5 CATS points, full course attendance (1- day) and a 750-word assignment is needed. Each assignment is to be submitted within three months of course completion. Advantages This is a flexible part-time certificate providing recognition of achievement by successfully completing the assignments associated with a range of approved business and management related courses. The format provides the focus to apply the knowledge & skills learned to a work-based situation, increasing depth of satisfaction and understanding. For those without any formal higher qualifications the Certificate provides recognition of achievement and an introduction to Higher and Further education; for those who already hold higher qualifications this can provide additional recognition of their application of business and management-related knowledge, skills and experience. Participants who undertake short courses will normally be supported by their employers who are seeking to invest in the human capacity of valued employees. For the employer, working towards the Certificate demonstrates achievement of learning outcomes, application of training & prior learning, commitment to selfdevelopment and keenness to progress. It can also help justify the return on investment of the training. Certificate fee The certificate costs 1,380 which covers the requisite number of courses to achieve 60 CAT points (e.g. six 2-day courses, twelve 1-day courses, or any combination in between). For those not completing the certificate, individual course fees are currently 210 and 390 for 1-day and 2-day courses respectively. This means that registering for the certificate provides up to 50% discount on short courses fees. Further information & registration You can register for the Certificate in Business Management at any time of the year. The wide variety of topics on offer aims to meet the training needs of staff at all levels from private, public, community and voluntary sector organisations. Topics cover the areas of management & leadership, business & organisation, quality management, process & engineering, communication and personal development. All training is practical, relevant, enjoyable and competitively priced. Delivered by experienced presenters and practitioners in their field, the courses are specifically designed to help delegates apply the knowledge and skills learnt, back in the workplace. Continuing Professional Development Continuing Professional Development has become increasingly more important, not only for the individual, but also for organisations seeking to get the most from what is frequently referred to as their greatest resource - their staff. It is widely acknowledged among both employees and employers that relevant, well-delivered training programmes improve knowledge and skills, productivity, quality, competitiveness, progression, boost workplace morale and raise customer satisfaction. Although every course starts with core objectives, the material and mode of delivery is always tailored to the delegates in the room, on the day. This means that we cater to every level and offer individual attention for personal and professional development. To achieve this, and to ensure effective practical workshops, delegate numbers on each course are restricted - so early booking is always advised. Attendance certificates All participants receive a Certificate of Attendance on completion of a course (minimum of 80% attendance required). Additional courses & bespoke training Meeting our clients needs and flexibility are our guiding principles. The programme offers a broad spectrum of topics and if there is sufficient demand for a particular subject an additional open course may be arranged at any time, including evenings and weekends.
