Introduction ISO 9001:2015 (1/4) ISO 9001:2015 promotes the adoption of a process approach when developing, implementing and improving the effectiveness of a quality management system, to enhance customer satisfaction by meeting customer requirements. Understanding and managing interrelated processes as a system contributes to the organization's effectiveness and efficiency in achieving its intended results. This approach enables the organization to control the interrelationships and interdependencies among the processes of the system, so that the overall performance of the organization can be enhanced. The process approach involves the systematic definition and management of processes, and their interactions, so as to achieve the intended results in accordance with the quality policy and strategic direction of the organization. Management of the processes the system as a whole can be achieved using the PDCA cycle with an overall focus on risk-based thinking aimed at taking advantage of opportunities and preventing undesirable results. The application of the process approach in a quality management system enables: - understanding and consistency in meeting requirements; - the consideration of processes in terms of added value; - the achievement of effective process performance; - improvement of processes based on evaluation of data and information. The picture below gives a schematic representation of any process and shows the interaction of its elements. The monitoring and measuring check points, which are necessary for control, are specific to each process and will vary depending on the related risks.

Introduction ISO 9001:2015 (2/4) PDCA Cycle of ISO 9001:2015 Risk-based thinking Risk-based thinking is essential for achieving an effective quality management system. The concept of risk-based thinking has been implicit in previous editions of ISO 9001:2015 including, for example, carrying out preventive action to eliminate potential nonconformities, analyzing any nonconformities that do occur, and taking action to prevent recurrence that is appropriate for the effects of the nonconformity. To conform to the requirements of ISO 9001:2015, an organization needs to plan and implement actions to address risks and opportunities. Addressing both risks and opportunities establishes a basis for increasing the effectiveness of the quality management system, achieving improved results and preventing negative effects. Opportunities can arise as a result of a situation favorable to achieving an intended result, for example, a set of circumstances that allow the organization to attract customers, develop new products and services, reduce waste or improve productivity. Actions to address opportunities can also include consideration of associated risks. Risk is the effect of uncertainty and any such uncertainty can have positive or negative effects. A positive deviation arising from a risk can provide an opportunity, but not all positive effects of risk result in opportunities.

Introduction ISO 9001:2015 (3/4) Quality management principles in ISO 9001: principles are applied to ISO 9001:2008 but 7 principles are applied to ISO 9001:2015 ISO9001:2008 ISO9001: [ Customer focus ] 1 [ Customer focus ] 2 [ Leadership ] 2 [ Leadership ] 3 [ Involvement of people ] 3 [ Engagement of people ] 4 [ Process approach ] 4 [ Process approach ] 5 [ System approach to management ] 5 [ Improvement ] 6 [ Continual improvement ] 6 [ evidence-based decision making ] 7 [ Factual approach to decision making ] 7 [ relationship management ] 8 [ Mutually beneficial supplier relationship ]

Introduction ISO 14001:2015 (1/3) Aim of an environmental management system The purpose of ISO 9001:2015 is to provide organizations with a framework to protect the environment and respond to changing environmental conditions in balance with socio-economic needs. It specifies requirements that enable an organization to achieve the intended outcomes it sets for its environmental management system. A systematic approach to environmental management can provide top management with information to build success over the long term and create options for contributing to sustainable development by: protecting the environment by preventing or mitigating adverse environmental impacts; mitigating the potential adverse effect of environmental conditions on the organization; assisting the organization in the fulfillment of compliance obligations; enhancing environmental performance; controlling or influencing the way the organization s products and services are designed, manufactured, distributed, consumed and disposed by using a life cycle perspective that can prevent environmental impacts from being unintentionally shifted elsewhere within the life cycle; achieving financial and operational benefits that can result from implementing environmentally sound alternatives that strengthen the organization s market position; communicating environmental information to relevant interested parties. Success factors The success of an environmental management system depends on commitment from all levels and functions of the organization, led by top management. Organizations can leverage opportunities to prevent or mitigate adverse environmental impacts and enhance beneficial environmental impacts, particularly those with strategic and competitive implications. Top management can effectively address its risks and opportunities by integrating environmental management into the organization s business processes, strategic direction and decision making, aligning them with other business priorities, and incorporating environmental governance into its overall management system. Demonstration of successful implementation of ISO 9001:2015 can be used to assure interested parties that an effective environmental management system is in place. Adoption of ISO 9001:2015, however, will not in itself guarantee optimal environmental outcomes. Application of ISO 9001:2015 can differ from one organization to another due to the context of the organization. Two organizations can carry out similar activities but can have different compliance obligations, commitments in their environmental policy, environmental technologies and environmental performance goals, yet both can conform to the requirements of ISO 9001:2015. The level of detail and complexity of the environmental management system will vary depending on the context of the organization, the scope of its environmental management system, its compliance obligations, and the nature of its activities, products and services, including its environmental aspects and associated environmental impacts.

Introduction ISO 14001:2015 (2/3) PDCA Cycle of ISO14001:2015 Life cycle in ISO 14001:2015 consecutive and interlinked stages of a product (or service) system, from raw material acquisition or generation from natural resources to final disposal. The life cycle stages include acquisition of raw materials, design, production, transportation/ delivery, use, end-of-life treatment and final disposal.

Other International Standards on quality management and quality management systems developed by ISO/TC 176 ISO 9000 Quality management systems Fundamentals and vocabulary provides an essential background for the proper understanding and implementation of ISO 9001:2015.The quality management principles are described in detail in ISO 9000 and have been taken into consideration during the development of ISO 9001:2015. These principles are not requirements in themselves, but they form the foundation of the requirements specified by ISO 9001:2015. ISO 9000 also defines the terms, definitions and concepts used in ISO 9001:2015. ISO 9001 (ISO 9001:2015) specifies requirements aimed primarily at giving confidence in the products and services provided by an organization and thereby enhancing customer satisfaction. Its proper implementation can also be expected to bring other organizational benefits, such as improved internal communication, better understanding and control of the organization s processes. ISO 9004 Managing for the sustained success of an organization A quality management approach provides guidance for organizations that choose to progress beyond the requirements of ISO 9001:2015, to address a broader range of topics that can lead to improvement of the organization s overall performance. ISO 9004 includes guidance on a self-assessment methodology for an organization to be able to evaluate the level of maturity of its quality management system. The International Standards outlined below can provide assistance to organizations when they are establishing or seeking to improve their quality management systems, their processes or their activities.
