2 Program Overview: The Advanced Management Certificate Program builds off of the Management Skills for Supervisors and Non-Profit Management Certificate programs, focusing on the more technical managerial skills required to be successful in today s complex business environment. The five-module Certificate Program will provide learning experiences that can be applied directly to real-world situations. To earn this certificate, you must successfully complete all five core courses. Audience: Individuals who have completed RDC Management Skills for Supervisors Certificate Mid-level managers with 1-5 years of experience Junior-level managers with 3+ years of experience looking for advancement Individuals wanting to develop technical managerial skills in areas such as financial analysis, short and long term business planning, business processes, project management and basic HR (hiring, performance, coaching) Graduate Profile: This program explores how management s roles in guiding and organizing the work, developing people, managing performance and managing relations are executed at mid-level management. Specifically, graduates of this course will be able to: Generate short and long term business plans that align with the organization s strategic direction Analyze financial data and use it for making decisions Establish a set of managerial tools and key performance indicators Build a portfolio of managerial strategies to create and maintain effective change Map workflows to find efficiencies and improvements Apply project management principles to successfully move initiatives forward Explore HR strategies in recruitment, orientation, development and performance contribute to long term organizational success and reduce costs. Course Delivery: This program consists of five individual courses. Each course is a 14-hour, instructor-led seminar. Course manuals and PowerPoint presentations are provided. Core Courses: Essentials of Finance Applied Project Management Strategic Planning HR for Managers Business Process Mapping Completion of all five core courses is required for completion of the Certificate Program. 2 P a g e

3 Textbooks: All course materials are included in the price of the courses. Course Descriptions: Essentials of Finance Improve your financial acumen. Learn how to analyze financial statements, make capital budgeting decisions, and manage a budget. Emphasis in this course is on the practical application of theory through practice exercises/examples. 1. Describe the relationship between finance and strategy 2. Identify which key performance indicators that measures of business performance 3. Measure risk and return using ratios, percentages and descriptive narrative 4. Define the cost of capital and the opportunity cost of capital 5. Build and use financial statements for organizational decision making 6. Create a balance score card using Key Performance Indicators 7. Read and interpret organizational key financial statements 8. Employ forecasting tools to make decisions, measure the financial impact of decisions made from forecasting. Applied Project Management Explore the world of project management from beginning to end. Learn the basic concepts of how projects come to life, how they are managed throughout their lifecycle and how they are closed-out. 1. Define the life cycle of a project 2. Demonstrate the ability to outline all phases of the project 3. Discuss the definition of a project 4. Summarize basic project fundamentals - time management, resource management, cost management 5. Assess how and why projects are broken into stages to facilitate work 6. Apply project fundamentals to daily work Strategic Planning What is a strategic business planning? Learn the difference between strategic, operational, and business plans. Realize the purpose of your organization's strategic plan and identify how to align work to business objectives. Using several management analytical tools and problem-solving skills you will develop a model strategic plan 1. Outline and analyze the strategic planning model within relevant context. 2. Perform root cause analysis 3. Identify and perform environmental scans 3 P a g e

4 4. Identify key performance indicators and industry benchmarks 5. Outline managerial tools to Initiate and sustain change 6. Discuss how strategic planning can be implemented throughout the organization. HR for Managers Learn strategies to improve employee engagement, retention, and performance. Effective HR strategies in recruitment, orientation, and development contribute to long-term organizational success and reduce costs. 1. Discuss contemporary Human Resource topics and how the roles of supervisors and managers relate. 2. Outline the processes of employee recruitment, onboarding and retention 3. Categorize gaps in employee s performance and explore appropriate performance management strategies 4. Investigate various models of compensation and benefits in Western Canada Business Process Mapping In a competitive business environment, utilizing time and resources to get a quality outcome is essential. This course provides managers the knowledge and tools to map out how work is being performed, where improvements can be made, and how to implement those improvements. 1. Examine the critical function of business process management 2. Explore the role technology plays in process management 3. Construct a process map by applying the standard principles of swim lanes 4. Conduct a what-if analysis to improve your processes 5. Identify how Lean and Six Sigma methods can assist in management and improving process Admission Recommendations: Management Skills for Supervisors, Non-Profit Management Certificate or 5 years managerial experience Prior Learning/Approved Equivalencies: There are no prior learning or approved equivalencies for this course. Program Regulations for Grades and Attendance: Students must acquire a Successful grade in all five core courses based on completion of the learning assessment criteria; meet the 80% attendance of each class, and participation as outlined in each course outline. 4 P a g e

5 Transcripts: Students must acquire a Successful grade on all five core courses in order to receive their certificate. As per the Red Deer College grading policy, percentage grades will be converted to the grade of S (satisfactory) or U (unsatisfactory) for non-credit career development programs. Certificate: Once you have successfully completed the required courses, you can receive your certificate by completing the parchment application form which is available online, or by contacting the School of Continuing Education at Red Deer College. Changes to the Course Outline: Changes in the course outline may be made after the first class, providing this is done in consultation with the students and instructors and reviewed by the Program Coordinator for completeness and consistency with college policies. Student Responsibilities: As college students, you must accept responsibility for managing your own learning. You are expected to have read assigned material prior to class and be prepared for class discussion and exercises on the topic. You are responsible for completing and understanding exercises distributed in class. Completion of these exercises is extremely important in mastering the subject matter. You are encouraged to study together shared knowledge and experience often enhances individual learning. Your attendance is required for all class periods. You are strongly encouraged to contact the instructor or instructional assistant if you are encountering difficulty with the subject material. Course Costs: As published in the course guide. Registration Information: Students may register by completing a registration form and submitting it to the RDC Office of the Registrar in person, to reg.coned@rdc.ab.ca or via fax ( ).
