3 Emotional Intelligence Unlike personality and intelligence which are relatively fixed throughout most of life EI has been described as something that can be taughtlearnt and therefore improved. Unlike IQ, EI places people in a category from which they can grow

4 EI has been proposed to impact Effective networking Listening and oral communication skills; Conflict management Stress management and adaptability Teamwork effectiveness Negotiating skills Leadership

5 EI coincides a shift in public sentiment about the role and impact of emotions in the workplace The workplace is not an emotion free zone - people predominantly think and act at work because of the way they feel rather than on rationality alone. Employees now have expectations that their own emotions need to be perceived, understood, regulated and managed at work in a professional and educated manner. Employees are more than ever before, looking for ways of better regulating and managing their own emotions at work!

9 As a leader how effective is your emotional intelligence? Are you aware of your own emotions when dealing with your team or key stakeholders? Do your express them appropriately? That is, do you build relationship through your own body language, facial expressions, tone of voice etc. Can you recognise the emotions of the other person? Does this data impact your decisions and by how much? When you re having a down day, can you pick yourself up and project a positive image? How well do you control your emotions when your buttons are pushed or are you seen as a robot?
