4 INTRO: SECTION 1 A New Breed of Professional The delivery of goods and services is becoming increasingly complex in our global economy. Natural disasters, unstable world economies, and unpredictable political landscapes require a new breed of professional who can manage the complexities of the global supply chain. The problem is that there could be thousands of top level supply chain jobs available in coming years, but without qualified candidate supply to fill them, according to Fortune Magazine. A Master s degree in Supply Chain Management or a graduate certificate in the field can position you for a career in this growing sector and be the key to higher earnings. Kettering University Online has recognized the need for a skilled labor force in this growing field. Kettering University Online offers a Master of Science in Supply Chain Management and a Supply Chain Management and Enterprise Resource Planning Graduate Certificate. The programs are offered 100% online and allow students to progress at their own pace. 4 KETTERING UNIVERSITY ONLINE SUPPLY CHAING MANAGEMENT JOB GUIDE online.kettering.edu

5 SECTION 2 What is supply chain management? Supply chain management is the planning and logistics that ensure material, information, and finances are transferred from initial manufacturers to the wholesaler and finally to the consumer. It s a complicated process that tasks supply chain professionals with coordinating the flow of goods both within the company and with external sources all over the world. THE SUPPLY CHAIN GAP One of the major gaps in supply chain management is the lack of supply chain professionals who meet the current and growing need for skilled leadership. According to a survey by Deloitte Consulting in The Wall Street Journal, 71% of multinational companies report difficulty filling senior leadership supply chain positions. There are plenty of people who have worked in a function logistics, sourcing, production, Peter Gibbons, Mattel s chief supply chain officer, told The Wall Street Journal. But a small number of people who have program management expertise across those functions. That s the gap. 6 SECTION 3 Does a Master s Degree Make a Difference? For full-time workers 25 and older the median salary with a master s degree was $72,072 a year, according to The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. That compares to a $57,252 median salary for someone with a bachelor s degree - about a $15,000 yearly premium, based on USBLS data. Over the course of a lifetime the difference can be more than $300,000 in base earnings. The USBLS notes that not all workers earn a premium and not all advanced degrees have the same impact. The benefits of a master s degree shifts from career to career. However, in looking at some of the positions directly related to Supply Chain Management based on USBLS data, the premium was substantial. POSITION MEDIAN SALARY WITH BACHELOR S MEDIAN SALARY WITH MASTER S DIFFERENCE LOGISTICIAN $54,000 $82,000 +$28,000 TRANSPORTATION, STORAGE, AND DISTRIBUTION MANAGERS $62,000 $90,000 +$25,000 6 KETTERING UNIVERSITY ONLINE SUPPLY CHAING MANAGEMENT JOB GUIDE online.kettering.edu

7 SECTION 4 Education Matters Median salaries tend to rise with education levels. Beyond that, unemployment rates tend to fall as education rises. According to the USBLS, the higher a person s education level, the more likely they are to be employed. DOCTORAL DEGREE PROFESSIONAL DEGREE MASTER S DEGREE BACHELOR S DEGREE 2.2% 2.3% 3.4% 4.0% ASSOCIATES DEGREE 5.4% SOME COLLEGE/NO DEGREE HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA 7.0% 7.5% LESS THAN A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA 11.0% The unemployment rate drops with every additional level of education attained. Workers with less education than a high school diploma had the highest unemployment rate (11 percent), while those with a doctoral degree had the lowest rate (2.2 percent). Earnings by educational attainment generally follow the opposite pattern, peaking for workers with a professional degree a group that includes lawyers and dentists and decreasing as education levels fall. 8 SECTION 5 Supply Chain and Profitability Supply-chain professionals can significantly contribute to a company s bottom. An exceptional supply chain creates efficiencies and can create a sustainable competitive advantage. Organizations must carefully manage their operations and supply chains in order to prosper and, indeed, survive, wrote Cecil Bozarth and Robert Handfield in their 2016 book Introduction to Operations and Supply Chain Management. Combine your knowledge of the industry, profession, company and similar positions to include the right keywords that will drive maximum attention to your resume. Select keywords that match the employer s requirements with your value proposition and ensure they are used prominently in your headline and resume copy.
