2 Reporting to the Contract Supervisor, the position is responsible for the maintenance of Port of Townsville Limited s grounds and gardens and associated infrastructure in accordance with agreed standards, practices and procedures. The position will at times supervise a small team of casual gardeners. POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES: The Gardener is responsible for the following: Key Responsibilities Understand the grounds and landscaping maintenance standard and implement as directed by the Contract Supervisor including: displaying an image of pride and care to the community in the presentation of port environs establishing and improving work methods in the course of grounds maintenance and repair work actively providing positive input into work outcomes solving day to day job problems Maintain grounds, trees, grassed areas and garden beds, including: weeding, mulching, fertilising, planting out and replacing as necessary and at correct time pruning/hedging of all shrubs and trees at the appropriate time watering of grass and garden areas blower vacuuming of paths and entrances applying pesticides, herbicides, insecticides or other chemicals to soil, weeds, plants or other surfaces as required controlling litter and graffiti Develop new gardens and planting, including: creating new garden beds/planting areas as directed maintaining a small holding nursery providing recommendations on plant replacement providing advice and proposals with ideas that will enhance the port environment Maintenance activities are completed on time and to quality assurance standards Landscaping assets are to be maintained in accordance with POTL s Grounds and Garden s Maintenance Manual New gardens and plantings are developed as required and enhance Port environs Page 2 of 7

3 Key Responsibilities Maintain and operate POTL s gardening plant and equipment, including: operating tractors, ancillary equipment and small plant items as required and ensure that they are efficiently and effectively utilised mowing and renovating turfed areas using correct machinery techniques using and calibrating spraying and fertilising equipment both mobile mounted and manually operated ensuring preventative maintenance procedures are adhered to and carrying out regular servicing of all grounds and garden equipment maintaining all plant in a sound mechanical condition and reporting any defects to the Contract Supervisor undertaking general maintenance duties as directed by the Contract Supervisor Provide and maintain records of time, activities and materials utilised, including: preparing materials lists completing and returning inspection check sheets completing records on plant utilisation complying with maintenance and service schedules reporting schedule deficiencies Actively provide positive input and solve day to day job problems and establish and improve work methods in the course of maintenance and repair work Ensure compliance with POTL s Safe Operating Procedures (SOPs) with all tasks and assist with Job Safety Environmental Analysis (JSEA s) when required Comply with standard operating procedures and maintenance schedules and report changes or inconsistencies. All machinery is operated in accordance with relevant legislative requirements and manufacturer s instructions and all machinery documentation is completed e.g. pre-start checks etc are completed Records are accurate and timely. Maintenance and Service schedules are complied with to the letter and Schedule deficiencies are reported in a timely manner Problems are rectified safely and in a timely manner Work methods do not expose the employee or other employees to health and safety issues/incidents or cause damage to the environment The Contract Supervisor is kept informed of all relevant procedures adopted SOPs and JSEAs comply with legislative and POTL requirements Non-conforming incidents or situations are recorded and rectified in a timely manner Non-conformance matters/issues are identified, recorded and resolved in a timely manner utilising the required documentation Page 3 of 7

LIMITS OF AUTHORITY: The Gardener is authorised to: Undertake all duties as outlined in position responsibilities above in accordance with the Corporate Plan, Statement of Corporate Intent, financial objectives and strategies, the annual budget and POTL s policies and Business Management System. Approved expenditure in accordance with the delegation contained in the Authorities and Delegations Policy. POSITION REQUIREMENTS: Mandatory Cert III or higher in Horticulture or related field with 3-5 years demonstrated experience Possession of a current Queensland MR Driver s Licence. Demonstrated skills in the use of tools, equipment and materials relevant to grounds and gardens maintenance. Page 5 of 7

6 Chemical users/herbicide Applicators licence. All employees have an obligation to comply with the Work Health and Safety Act, POTL s Workplace Health and Safety policies, procedures and instructions to ensure a safe workplace. POTL s OHS Structure, Functions, Roles and Responsibilities (POT 457) identifies the workplace health and safety responsibilities at each function and level within POTL. Desirable Possession of operator s tickets that desirably includes forklift, skid steer loader or backhoe/loader. General computer skills in Microsoft Office applications (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint) Note: The position requires frequent manual handling and extended periods of working in the field in the North Queensland climate. 7 SELECTION CRITERIA (to be addressed in application): Essential SC1 SC2 SC3 SC4 SC5 SC6 SC7 Cert III or higher in Horticulture or related field with 3-5 years demonstrated experience Possession of a current Queensland MR Driver s Licence. Demonstrated skills in the use of tools, equipment and materials relevant to grounds and gardens maintenance. Chemical users/herbicide Applicators licence. Possess a knowledge and understanding of the way in which to care for, manage and develop identified garden areas. Demonstrated skills in managing time, setting priorities, planning and organising daily work Demonstrated supervisory experience combined with the ability to work within a team environment and undertake tasks without constant supervision. Desirable SC8 Possession of operator s tickets that desirably includes forklift, skid steer loader or backhoe/loader.
