2 HEAD OF HR AND ORGANISATION DEVELOPMENT Contract: part-time (0.8 FTE), permanent Salary: circa 45,000-50,000 p.a. pro-rata (including LWA), depending on experience Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance is one of the world s leading conservatoires, renowned for its forward focus and innovative programmes. Based across two sites - the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich (a World Heritage Site) and the nearby award-winning Laban Building we train over 1,000 gifted musicians and dance artists from over 40 countries world-wide. Our wider community includes many thousands of alumni around the world, the 12,000 people each year who engage with our world-famous learning and participation programme, and an audience of over 70,000 each year who attend our diverse range of performances in music and contemporary dance. We are seeking a skilled and experienced Head of HR and Organisation Development to lead the operational HR team and support the modernisation of the HR function and people management approaches. This is an outstanding opportunity for an experienced senior level HR professional with strong influencing skills and extensive experience of HR service improvement. The ideal candidate will also have experience of consulting and negotiating on new HR policy and procedures, terms and conditions of employment and other employment related matters within a unionised environment. Whilst currently a part-time permanent opportunity, interested candidates need to recognise that the introduction of this role is part of a staged process of HR function modernisation and HR service improvement. 3 JOB DESCRIPTION Post: Department: Reporting to: Responsible for: Head of HR and Organisation Development Human Resources Assistant Director of HR and Staff Engagement HR Officers x2 and HR Administrator Grade: 8 PURPOSE To effectively lead the HR operations team, deliver improvements to employee lifecycle processes, assist to harmonise and modernise pay and terms and conditions and support the Assistant Director, HR & Staff Engagement in the design and delivery of OD initiatives. KEY RESULT AREAS Reporting into the Assistant Director of HR and Staff Engagement, the post holder will be responsible for managing HR Operations and support the delivery of Organisation Development initiatives. The key objectives of the post are: HR Operations & Service Improvement The post holder will lead the HR Operations function, encompassing the provision of a range of transactional HR related services related to employee lifecycle including; centralised customer/employee query handling, HR case management, recruitment, and HR information systems. The post holder will ensure customer-focused HR service delivery excellence across the entire employee lifecycle, applying exceptional process and project management to enable effective and cost-efficient improvements to processes and procedures within the HR service. The post holder will need to: Identify current and potential HR service issues and problems across Trinity Laban; Establish customer requirements and priorities through partnering with Faculties and Departmental management teams; Establish strategy to ensure effective delivery, and adapt existing processes to meet crucial organisational needs; Ensure compliance and legislative requirements are given critical priority in the design and implementation of service; Visibly lead and motivate the HR operations team, driving a culture of service excellence and value for money, leading HR services redesign and improvement; Lead development and monitoring of key performance indicators, metrics and short- 3

4 and-long term targets for service delivery taking corrective action as required; Lead and sponsor any major service model restructuring, and use management information to build organisation insights and highlight priorities and risks to the AD, HR & Staff Engagement; Use formal continuous improvement processes to improve process efficiency and effectiveness. Employee Relations The post holder will ensure that the individual and collective relationship between Trinity Laban and its employees is managed appropriately; within a clear framework underpinned by organisation culture practices, policies and ultimately by relevant law. The post holder will need to: Work with the AD, HR & Staff Engagement, establish the overall employee relations culture with managers and leaders, building trust, respect and fairness between Trinity Laban and its employees; Lead the development of the employee relations strategy that delivers and supports Trinity Laban s objectives; Ensure that all HR/people strategies, policies and procedures are consistently deployed in line with Trinity Laban s stated values; Coordinate and work with legal providers to ensure ER competency within the HR department; Advise managers and leaders on appropriate conflict management approaches, including mediation; Ensure that grievance and disciplinary practice is robust and thoughtful to avoid tribunal action where appropriate; Adopt an independent stand between Trinity Laban and it s two recognised trade unions to constructively challenge both parties to improve and modernise working practices; Encourage and support managers and leaders to adopt a performance-driven culture underpinned by a strong performance management capability. Performance and Reward Working with the AD, HR & Staff Engagement, the post holder will help create and maintain a high achieving organisation culture by delivering programmes that reward and recognise key employee capabilities, skills, behaviours experience and performance, and ensure that reward systems are market-relevant, fair and cost-effective. The post holder will need to: Thoroughly assess internal and external factors driving reward requirements against Trinity Laban s strategic plan; Develop strategic and financial insights from reward surveys and external benchmarking exercises to inform the development of strategic and operating plans; Ensure Trinity Laban s reward strategy is aligned with its overall people strategy and people plans; Ensure that any reward strategies are fair and inclusive across all groups and working 4

5 patterns; Lead the delivery of Trinity Laban s pay and reward strategy and plans; Provide clarity regarding costs of pay strategy and risks to the organisation; Encourage and support managers and leaders to reflect a performance-driven culture through using a principles approach to performance and reward strategic decisions; Role-model effective performance management and work with the managers to ensure goals are aligned across all Trinity Laban departments. Organisation Development Working with the AD, HR & Staff Engagement, support the identifying of organisational and individual capability requirements and align strategy, people and processes to optimise effectiveness and to help achieve the goals of Trinity Laban. In addition, they will be required to design interventions to drive the appropriate culture, behaviours skills, and performance and provide insight and leadership on change management strategy, planning and implementation. The post holder will need to: Interrogate Trinity Laban s strategic plan to understand the key organisation development needs and compare them with the organisation s current capacity and capability to deliver; Identify organisation development needs with managers to meet strategic and operational priorities; Gain support for the OD business case with the AD, HR and Staff Engagement outline the anticipated business outcomes, benefit and risks; Support the AD, HR and Staff Engagement in assessing Trinity Laban s change capacity to absorb the scale of OD interventions, and the potential risks and impact on business performance; Support managers and leader to recognise key levers of change and how to build a strategy around these; Lead and role-model the development and on-going management of an improvement management culture. Other Duties: To assist the Assistant Director of HR and Employee Engagement as and when necessary and undertake any other appropriate and relevant duties that may reasonably be required. The post holder must: Act with professionalism and integrity at all times in the carrying out any duties for and on behalf of Trinity Laban; Be able and willing to attend meetings and events outside normal working hours, and on occasion to attend conferences or seminars that may be appropriate to the post; At all times be committed to Trinity Laban s Equality, Diversity and Access Policy; Adhere to all policies and procedures relating to Health and Safety in the workplace. 5

7 HEAD OF HR AND ORGANISATION DEVELOPMENT PERSON SPECIFICATION Criteria: the post holder must be able to demonstrate the following Qualifications: Educated to degree level or equivalent Professional qualification (MCIPD or equivalent) Knowledge and Experience: Evidence of leading HR operations Evidence of Pay and Reward project work Evidence of harmonising or streamlining terms and conditions of service Evidence of working on OD projects Evidence of partnership working with recognised trade unions and consulting and consulting with JNCC or equivalent Highly motivated to achieve results and deliver HR service improvement Experience of leading a successful HR team, managing people, and setting high standards of professionalism. Ability to develop relationships with a broad range of stakeholders, building trust and commitment to the further success of Trinity Laban. Ability to craft and deliver, or otherwise commission, high quality and engaging OD solutions Evidence of ability to plan and deliver projects Experience of managing systems and processes that ensure consistent and high quality data quality Experience of setting and managing departmental budgets, and of preparing accurate and precise strategic, management and financial reports. Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues across faculties and departments. Experience of working in a complex public sector organisation (within the UK Higher Education sector desirable) or significant unionised private sector experience with the ability to demonstrate compatibility with creative industries and educational sector. The ability to travel from time to time, and to attend events and meetings outside normal working hours. 10 CONDITIONS OF SERVICE SUMMARY Contract: Hours: Location: Salary: Annual Leave: Pension Scheme: Sick Pay: Staff Development: Car Parking: Cafeteria: Classes: Events: Childcare: Eye Care: Health: Part-time (0.8 FTE), permanent. 28 hours per week. Office hours are usually 9.00am 5.00pm, Monday to Friday (with a daily lunch break of one hour for each full day worked). You will be based at the Faculty of Dance, Laban Building, Creekside, but may also be required to work at the Faculty of Music, King Charles Court, Old Royal Naval College. Circa 45,000-50,000 p.a. pro-rata, depending on experience. This is based on the Trinity Laban Staff Salary Scale, Grade 8, Incremental Points 37 43, 42,908-50,508 p.a. pro-rata, inclusive of a London Weighting Allowance of 3,584 p.a. pro-rata. Salaries are paid on the last working day of each month direct into bank or building society accounts. 25 days pro-rata, in addition to Statutory, Bank and Public Holidays. The successful candidate will be auto-enrolled into the Universities Superannuation Scheme. Employees contribute at the rate of 8% of their pensionable salary. The Conservatoire pays the Employer s contribution currently at the rate of 18% of pensionable salary. Trinity Laban operates the Statutory Sick Pay Scheme, and staff may be eligible for benefits in excess of this under Trinity Laban s own sick pay scheme. A range of Staff Development opportunities are available. A limited number of parking spaces are available at both sites, subject to availability. Our Cafeterias/Licensed Bars at both sites serve a range of hot and cold drinks snacks. Reduced rates access to Adult Classes. There are a wide range of music and dance performances each week, many of which are free to members of staff. Trinity Laban operates the Edenred childcare voucher scheme.
