1 Helen Keller International INTERNSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT Dietary Assessment Intern (Dhaka, Bangladesh) Established in 1915 with Helen Keller as a founding trustee, Helen Keller International (HKI) is dedicated to saving the sight and lives of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged. Headquartered in New York City, HKI currently conducts programs in 21 countries in Africa and Asia, as well as in the United States. Renowned for its reliability, efficiency and high level of technical expertise, HKI promotes the development of sustainable, large-scale programs that deliver effective preventative and curative services for nutrition, eye health and neglected tropical diseases. Each year, HKI hosts student interns to engage in substantive projects in our country and regional offices. Background Helen Keller International (HKI) has been working in Bangladesh since HKI implements different projects in partnership with national and international NGOs. The focus of HKI s work is on nutrition, food security and eye health. Current program areas include Dhaka, Barisal, Satkhira, Khulna, Bagerhat, Nilphamari, the northern Char areas, Sylhet, Chittagong and the CHITTAGONG HILL TRACTS. Since late 2014, HKI Bangladesh has undertaken several surveys that quantify household and Individual food consumption patterns in rural and urban Bangladesh. Scope of Work The student would work with the Monitoring, Research, and Evaluation unit on refining and documenting our tools for food consumption surveys, as well as analyzing data from data collection activities in an urban sample (Dhaka City Corporation) and a rural sample (Nabiganj District). Analysis will consist of both individual dietary adequacy and intra-household distribution of food. For the rural site, the fellow could also assist in measuring change over time. The position should result in two concrete deliverables: 1) a paper summarizing the tools HKI uses to undertake the food consumption assessments, and 2) a paper resulting from an analysis of existing data. The topic of this paper can be identified in the first weeks of the assignment or before the student arrives. Qualifications This is an ideal position for a student who has completed coursework on food consumption surveys (including data analysis), but has not yet had the opportunity to take part in fieldwork. Professional experience and/or coursework in dietary assessment and statistical methods to analyze such data. Highly computer literate. Proficient in using STATA, SPSS, or SAS. Knowledge of STATA is preferred.

Ability to work independently, prioritize workload, assume responsibility for work, and follow through to completion. Additionally, the intern would be responsible for collecting and editing case studies, success stories, and lessons learned for program documentation, focusing on maternal and child nutrition, income and market access among beneficiary families. Qualifications This position would be ideal for an MPH, agriculture or social science student seeking hands-on experience in nutrition and nutrition sensitive agriculture projects in an international setting. Professional experience and/or coursework in nutrition, agriculture, gender equality, and/or qualitative research. Highly computer literate. Proficient in using Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point Excellent oral and written English language skills, including the ability to clearly document work and write reports. Since 2009, HKI has undertaken three projects which train local eye hospitals to treat patients with diabetic retinopathy (DR) while seeking to prevent the occurrence of the disease. The current project, with a public hospital, private eye hospital, and diabetes hospital, seeks to increase access to high-quality diabetic retinopathy screening and treatment among poor patients in Bangladesh through: 1) expanding early detection of DR through establishing and promoting a high-quality DR assessment center at the Government of Bangladesh National Institute of Ophthalmology & Hospital (NIO&H), 2) improving the Government of Bangladesh s capacity to treat DR, including providing counseling to improve patient compliance with treatment recommendations, and 3) advocating for the inclusion of effective DR screening, grading, treatment and prevention strategies into the Government of Bangladesh National Eye Care Plan. Scope of Work The Intern would assist in establishing the patient heath record system in a current DR project undertaken with the NIO&H, while conducting comparative research with other existing DR clinics to assess referral, follow-up, and treatment adherence by patients, focusing on barriers and ways to overcome barriers, including in-depth interviews and analysis. This would consist of examining historical data and collecting new data in the NIO&H clinic. The intern would review datasets from past projects and work on summary papers that highlight our progress to data, as well as identifying gaps in the literature that the HKI experience could help to fill. Qualifications This position would be ideal for an MPH, medical anthropology, or medical sociology student seeking hands-on experience in public health with an international health project. Professional experience and/or coursework in research design and analysis, both quantitative and quantitative. Professional experience and/or coursework in eye health is preferred. Highly computer literate. Proficient in using Excel, STATA, SAS, or SPSS. Knowledge of ODK or other online data collection systems is a plus.

Scope of Work The student will work with the Gender team in undertaking an analysis and mapping exercise of HKI-Bangladesh. The purpose of the exercise will be to understand how gender-sensitive and aware HKI-BD is, in relation to three practical areas: - Staff/Human Resources; - Projects interventions and outcomes (including database/resources and M&E); - Stakeholders and partners relations. The final report will include findings and a short-term action plan for institutionalizing gender in the organization. The action plan will inform a tailored gender policy and strategy for HKI- Bangladesh. The internship duration should be minimum of three months, and ideally, the candidate has an interest in gender equality and policy-making processes. Scope of Work There are three program evaluation internships: 1) Work with the Monitoring, Research, and Evaluation unit on historic and recently collected data sets. The intern would focus on the historic datasets of two projects in which the intervention had a plausible reduction in stunting and review other historic datasets for outcomes. Time and interest permitting, the intern would assist in the analysis of two ongoing evaluations: one among communities of ethnic minorities in the southeastern part of the country and the other among young women in the northeastern part of the country. 2) Lead the development of a qualitative baseline tool from which to measure changes in knowledge, agreement, and accompanied changes in behavior or to expand in the qualitative methods used in these evaluations, such as cognitive methods, social network analysis, barrier analysis, etc. Qualifications This position would be ideal for an MPH, medical anthropology, or medical sociology student seeking hands-on experience in project design and evaluation of an international health project.
