4 Introduction Background & Objectives Together with other HR association across Canada, the CPHR Manitoba (previously HRMAM) was interested in conducting a survey among HR managers across the country. The objectives of this study were to identify and measure: HR salaries, benefits, and other compensation; Job responsibilities; Acquisition and benefit of the CPHR designation; Professional development activities. Participating HR organizations and the corresponding regions are detailed in the table below. HR associations from Ontario and Quebec did not participate in the study. 5 Methodology Methodology & Sample The study was conducted online from October 17th to 30th, 2016 with members of the different human resources associations across Canada. The sample for this study was provided by individual human resources associations. A total of 14,643 human resources professionals were invited to participate in the study via from the their respective HR associations, including 1,230 CPHR Manitoba members. Overall, the survey had a response rate of 14.; the response rate among CPHR Manitoba members was 32.9%. As an acknowledgement of their participation, respondents names were entered into a draw to win 1-of-2 prizes of $500 each. Sample sizes for each group are detailed in the table below. 7 Executive Summary CPHR Manitoba members tend to be female and full-time employees. The typical CPHR Manitoba member is a salaried full-time employee (88%), who has worked in the human resources field for 10 years or longer (average of 12.9 years). o The average amount of time employed by their current company is 6.2 years, with 3.8 years in their current position. A strong majority of CPHR Manitoba members are women (8). The average age is 42 years, with the majority (59%) aged 35 to 54 years, and just over one-quarter (28%) under the age of 35. Most (7) focus entirely on human resources and related functions in their current position, although over one-quarter (27%) have responsibilities outside HR. Most CPHR Manitoba members feel fairly compensated for their work. Over three-quarters (78%) of CPHR Manitoba members agree that they feel fairly compensated for their work, including over one-third (3) who strongly agree with this sentiment. The average annual base salary for CPHR Manitoba members before taxes is $77,748. o Just over half (5) earn $60 thousand to less than $100 thousand; one-in-five (19%) earn $100 thousand or more; and just under three-in-ten (28%) earn less than $60 thousand. o Among those who have worked in HR for five years or longer, two-in-five (4) have seen a salary increase of 20% or more. 7

8 Executive Summary Continued CPHR Manitoba members benefit from obtaining a CRHR designation. Nearly all (98%) CPHR Manitoba members have at least some post-secondary education, including a majority (6) who have a degree. o Among those who attended post-secondary, a strong majority (8) have formal education directly related to human resources. Just over half (5) CPHR Manitoba members currently hold a CPHR designation. o The remaining members who do not hold a CPHR designation are split between those who: - Plan to obtain their CPHR in the future: 20%; - Are currently a candidate or are in the process: 18%; and - Have not plans to obtain the designation: 8%. Among those who have not plans to obtain the designation, the most common reason is that they don t see any need for it (38%), followed by the fact that they do not have a degree (2). The majority (68%) of those with a CPHR agree that the designation has benefited their career, and the study confirms that those with a CPHR receive a number of advantages. including being significantly more likely to receive: - Higher annual income; and - Higher value from other benefits. 8

9 Executive Summary Continued Most CPHR Manitoba members spend time and money on professional development. Nearly all CPHR Manitoba members (9) have spent time on personal professional development in the past year, and a strong majority (8) have spent (or their organization has spent) money on their development. o On average, CPHR Manitoba members spent just under two and half weeks (95 hours) on professional development. o The average amount spent on professional development was $2,087. CPHR Manitoba members tend to work for mid to large size organizations. Most CPHR Manitoba members (7) work for organizations with 200 or more Canadian employees, including over two-in-five 44% who work for larger organizations of 1,000 employees or more. o Over half (57%) work for organizations with five or more employees in their HR department. Half (48%) of CPHR Manitoba members work for private organizations, over one-third (3) are public employees, and one-in-seven (14%) work for non-profits. o Among those who work for revenue generating organizations, the majority (6) work for organizations with annual gross revenues of $20 million or more. - This includes two-in-five (40%) who work for organizations with annual revenues of $100 million or more. 9

10 Executive Summary Continued Compared to other HR professionals, CPHR Manitoba members have worked in HR the longest and have the most responsibilities, but earn lower salaries. CPHR Manitoba members differ from other HR professionals across the country in a few key areas: o Employment characteristics: they are among the most likely to have worked in HR for twenty years or longer, to be involved in a number of specific HR aspects, and to agree that they have sufficient opportunity for advancement. o Education: they are significantly less likely to have a degree and a CPHR designation, but more likely to have a college or other non-degree certificate and formal education related to HR. o Professional development: they spent the greatest amount of time on professional development, but an equivalent amount of money. o Salary: their salaries are somewhat lower than the national average for HR professionals. o Other benefits: they are equally likely to receive most other types of compensation or perks. However, their estimated value for these other benefits is somewhat lower. o Firm-ographics: they are the least likely to work for small organizations with less than 200 employees in Canada. 10
