2 Our Story E-focus is a community based not-for-profit organisation delivering a range of employment, education and community development services to alleviate disadvantage and enrich the lives of individuals and local communities. From humble beginnings as a Community Youth Support Scheme project and then SkillShare project, E-focus has continued to grow and diversify, offering employment, education and training services designed to provide pathways to social and economic well-being. Since 1976, E-focus has facilitated and provided a holistic, high quality blend of recruitment, employment, education and community services. With 100 dedicated and professional staff, E-focus has supported and provided employment pathways for thousands of clients, especially those most disadvantaged in seeking and retaining employment. E-focus is the registered training business name of Heidelberg Training and Resource Centre. It evolved from its beginnings as PUSH in Heidelberg on 29 April On 1 June 1995, Heidelberg Training and Resource Centre Inc. was approved as a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) and currently has an extensive Scope of Registration covering qualifications across industries including Business, Retail, Community Services, Disability, Aged Care, Hospitality, Information Technology and Training and Assessment. 4 Training Services E-focus delivers a range of accredited and non-accredited education and training in the workplace or classroom. We offer a high quality education and assessment service to employers and specialise in customised on-the-job training designed to meet specific student and employer needs in industries like: Retail Business / Management Hospitality Community Services /Aged Care / Disability Information Technology Training and Assessment E-focus has been approved through the Victorian Training Guarantee Program to deliver government subsidised, nationally recognised training to eligible individuals. This training is delivered with Victorian State Government funding. Our Flexible Learning Centre (FLC) offers flexible programs designed to meet students needs and support them to return to study, improve literacy and numeracy skills, gain a qualification, broaden employment options and learn new skills. Classroom education and FLC programs are delivered in our Heidelberg and Box Hill training rooms. E-focus is a Learn Local provider. 4

We strive to provide you with a first-class experience based on up-to-date practices and skills required in the workplace and general community. We encourage open and honest communication and offer flexible learning choices. A variety of support services are available to match the type of learning or recognition service provided. We believe integrated learning (combining curriculum from two or more disciplines) allows students to see how ideas are connected. Decreasing birth rates and increasing life expectancy mean the over 65 age group will grow faster than younger age cohorts. Working with the elderly is a satisfying career path with opportunities for career progression. E-Focus Aged Care Training focuses on teaching students how to provide personal care to elderly people while offering companionship, social and emotional support. Older Australians are a precious resource. They deserve our love and care and support. A career in the growing disability sector is an opportunity to support and empower people to retain or regain their independence. Home and Community Care Home and Community Care professionals work collaboratively with people with disability, older people and their families, providing quality support services that respond to the person s individual needs, goals and choices. The Community Services sector currently offers plenty of full-time or part-time opportunities for professionals with the skills to care for clients at home and in community settings. 6

9 My trainer Sarah was lots of fun. I learnt lots about the retail industry which has given me skills and knowledge to gain employment. Jess Couchman Retail The retail industry is the country s largest employer, with 50 per cent of Australians currently working, or having worked, in the sector at some time (retailexecutive.com). It includes all businesses related to the sale of goods and services in the areas of food, personal and household goods, and motor vehicles. Careers in the retail industry offer a variety of opportunities. You will be working with a wide range of people, so you must enjoy engaging with others. Working in the retail industry is not just about you being a sales assistant it can provide lots of options for an interesting, long-term career with excellent prospects for progression. 10 I have over 30 years experience in management. Completing the TAE has provided me with a great new career in workplace training that I can use anywhere in my industry. Brian Uren Training and Assessment Training and Assessment is a pivotal qualification for many people who want to develop their training careers. If you want to work within the Vocational Educational Training (VET) sector as a Trainer and Assessor this is a mandatory qualification. This qualification is highly valued by employers and organisations in the public and private sector. This course will provide you with skills and knowledge to not only deliver training, but also to develop customised learning programs and conduct assessments for individuals and/or groups. 11 Information Technology The Information, Digital Media and Technology Industry is one of the fastest growing and changing fields. Technology is developing rapidly, and new devices and systems are constantly being created to provide faster and more efficient methods for information and communications technology (ICT). Qualifications in this field will provide you with the skills and knowledge to be competent in a wide range of general ICT and to achieve a degree of self-sufficiency as an advanced ICT user. Those working in this industry support information technology systems in the workplace across a wide range of ICT areas, including technical support, network administration, web technologies, software applications and digital media technologies. 12 After ten years as a full-time mother, returning to work was a daunting challenge. I was previously self-employed and had no work references. E-focus and the Flexible Learning Centre have allowed me to update and validate my skills in a stimulating environment. It has allowed me to gain recognition of vital work skills which has improved my confidence and now I can do anything I set my mind to. Mehgan Laidler Career Skills We know that it s imperative that more Australians are able to access quality training to improve their language, literacy, numeracy and employability skills. Foundation skills are fundamental to participation in the workplace, in the community and in adult education and training. E-focus is a specialist provider of adult education in community settings. Our experience is critical in providing diverse skills programs for adults through pre-vocational and bridging programs. The adult and community education sector provides flexible pathways to help learners build their skills and confidence and progress to further learning or employment. Skills training is aimed at individuals entering or re-entering the workforce or changing jobs, apprentices, trainees or entry-level employees. 13 The trainers down in the FLC make you feel like you can do anything if you put your mind to it, that you can get your certificate and get out there and show the world what you can do. With the training self-paced, as an individual you get to expand on the knowledge but you also get the group activities and examples that help keep everyone on the same page. The trainers are knowledgeable in their field of expertise and have no trouble projecting their knowledge into examples that will help us in the future.
