4 Introduction Employment Outlook for Massage Therapists According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, projected employment for Massage Therapists is to increase as much as 19% by the year Massage Employment 19% Growth 2008

5 Introduction Statistics for May 2010 show that the median hourly wage is $16.78/hr and the annual median earnings is $34,900. (Yearly earnings vary depending on part time or full time status). Outlook is good and employment opportunities exist! (Source: )

7 How can you help Employers? Understanding employers needs and how best to support those needs will build a partnership that can lead to successful graduate placement and make everyone happy! What are some issues Employers currently face?

9 Understanding Employers Needs Reasons for failure: Misguided expectations for having business Poor management Not enough start up / operating funds Poor location Lack of planning (no business plan)

10 Understanding Employers Needs Some Perceptions Employers think MTs have sense of entitlement. Employers feel many MTs lack initiative and ambition to advance their own careers. MTs do not think employers pay enough. MTs think employers work therapists too hard. (source: article)

11 Understanding Employers Needs Expectations (Employers) Need MTs to understand the cost / risks of doing business. Do your graduates appreciate the employer s investment and financial obligations?

12 Do they know...? Starting and building a successful business is a tremendous challenge. There are a multitude of details pertaining to operational logistics, legal documents and personnel that employers have to manage.

13 Understanding Employers Needs Expectations (continued) Need MTs to be job ready. New MTs often lack confidence & professionalism to engage with clients and coworkers quickly. Are your graduates self-directed?

15 Put yourself in their place... Q: What would make their jobs easier? A: Having consistent, trusted resources to recruit qualified therapists. Easy to find, easy to use Targets the right pool of candidates

21 Websites Online Job Board Helpful tool for employers to let graduates know about job openings. Exercise caution; Not all employers are reputable or legitimate massage businesses.

32 Reach Out to Employers Get to know and develop a solid, professional relationship with all your employers. Don t wait for them to contact you.

33 Reach Out to Employers Conduct a site visit at their business to become familiar with the work environment. Make sure the employer has your resources and contact info.

34 Reach Out to Employers Make routine calls to see if you can be of service and/or to get job leads for your graduates.

36 Conclusion Invest time and energy to really understand who your employers are, what their goals are, what their needs are and how best to support them. Each employer can require a different approach. Treat each as a unique and very important client because that s what they are. If you take care of the client, the client will take care of you!
