1 COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER JOB DETAILS BACKGROUND INFORMATION ABOUT NEA (i) NEA the national energy action charity National Energy Action (NEA) is a large national charity whose work to improve and promote energy efficiency brings social, environmental, housing and employment benefits. Working in partnership with central and local government, fuel utilities, housing providers, with consumer groups and voluntary organisations, NEA aims to eradicate fuel poverty and secure greater investment in energy efficiency to help those who are poor and vulnerable. It currently employs 72 people, with the majority based at the national Headquarters in Newcastle upon Tyne and others based at regional and project offices across the UK. NEA has a subsidiary company Warm Zones CIC, which employs around 40 people and delivers a range of energy efficiency and related services to meet the charity s aims. NEA achieves its objectives through: * research and analysis into the causes and extent of fuel poverty and the development of policies which address the problem; * providing advice and guidance on good practice in delivering energy efficiency services to low-income customers; * developing national qualifications and managing their implementation to improve standards of training, practical work and the quality of energy advice; * campaigning to ensure social and environmental objectives are brought together under national energy efficiency programmes; * developing and managing demonstration projects in communities which show innovative ways of tackling fuel poverty and bring the wider benefits of energy efficiency to local communities. (ii) NEA s Structure NEA comprises of seven key Directorates; the Directorate of Communications and External Relations; two Directorates of Operations (Skills, Standards & Delivery Mechanisms and Community Engagement & Demonstration); Directorate of Policy and Research; Directorate of Support Services headed by Programme Director/Deputy Chief Executive; NEA Cymru and NEA Northern Ireland. The charity s head office is in Newcastle upon Tyne. A copy of the organisational structure is enclosed.

2 (iii) The post of Communications Officer This post is part of the Communications and External Relations Directorate which is responsible for the press and media, campaigning, communications, income generation, external business and partnerships functions of the charity. The Communications Officer will work as part of a team of four responsible to the Communications Manager, developing and co-ordinating PR activities including identifying PR opportunities, drafting communications strategies, writing and selling in press stories and using social media. Candidates should be educated to degree level with at least two years experience in a PR environment. Excellent verbal communication skills are a must as well as the ability to write for a range of different audiences. TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT Salary: The salary range is: 24,343-28,785 - local authority Scale 6 SO1. Hours of work: Holidays: Pensions and other benefits: Office: Post Status: 37 hours per week, Monday to Friday on a flexi-time basis. Applicants must be willing to work away from home as required. In the event of work undertaken on evenings or weekends, and which may involve travel away from the office, time off in lieu of payment is given. 25 days, plus 3 additional days in the Christmas/New year period, plus all public holidays. NEA offers a money-purchase, non-contributory pension scheme, and 11½% of Basic Salary will be paid by NEA into the pension. NEA also offers a death-in-service benefit scheme. 4 JOB DESCRIPTION Post: Responsible to: Communications Officer Communications Manager Responsibilities: 1. Organising and delivering conferences, campaigns, events, seminars and award schemes under direction of the Communications Manager. 2. Daily press monitoring and monitoring and distribution of relevant publications and alerts from relevant agencies. 3. Drafting and issuing press notices for all NEA s delivery and demonstration projects and follow-up to maximise uptake. 4. Creating original content for NEA s website, social/digital channels and other publications. 5. Handling media enquiries on NEA policy issues and giving comment under the direction of the Director or Manager. 6. Identifying and organising NEA s presence at relevant conferences and exhibitions to promote NEA s work and monitor outcomes. 7. Assisting in fundraising activities and work to maximise profile for NEA funders to facilitate their long-term support. 8. Maintaining and improving NEA s communications with external organisations, including the provision of support services to sponsors and supporters. 9. Contributing in general to NEA publications, conferences and seminars as appropriate. 10. Other responsibilities as may be agreed from time-to-time. 5 Person Specification Communications Officer Candidates should meet the following requirements: Essential Requirements: 1. A degree/diploma in PR, Marketing or related subject and 2 years experience in a PR/communications or related post. 2. Excellent oral and written communication skills. 3. Experience of media liaison. 4. The ability to identify and maximise PR opportunities within projects or initiatives. 5. Experience of using social/digital media within a work context. 6. Good organisational skills. 7. A positive and professional attitude to work and ability to work as part of a team. 8. Willingness to travel occasionally throughout England and Wales. 9. Empathy with the aims of NEA. Desirable requirements: 1. An understanding of domestic energy efficiency. 2. Experience in using design packages 3. Experience of creating and editing short videos 4. Experience of producing publications and/or other publicity and marketing materials
