1 Employer Survey 2018 SEPTEMBER 20, 2018 OKLAHOMA STATE UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY Office of Institutional Research

2 Introduction The OSUIT faculty, staff, and administration care about the level of education our graduates receive. Determining a graduate s success, as observed by a supervisor at their place of employment, is extremely valuable as the OSUIT Office of Institutional Research assesses the quality of educational services provided at OSUIT. The OSUIT Strategic Plan identifies employer feedback as a crucial need for administrators in making data driven decisions. This office administered the Employer Survey during the 2018 summer semester. Method Employer Survey forms (see Appendix C) were sent via United States Postal Service to all employers who were identified by students on the Graduation Survey (previously the Graduate Exit Interview) during the academic year. The current sample included employers or identified supervisors with viable contact information. Each survey mailed to employers included the name of a single OSUIT graduate employee as the focus of the employer s ratings. Invited to complete the survey were 246 employers; seventy employers returned surveys for a response rate of 28.5 percent. Surveys and invitations mailed to employers also provided a link allowing them to complete the survey online; ten of the 70 respondents took advantage of completing the survey online. Sample Characteristics Most employer respondents were supervisors (82.9%) of OSUIT graduates; 12.9 percent were familiar with the work of the OSUIT graduate without being the graduate s actual supervisor. When asked to indicate their primary company functions, Diesel & Heavy Equipment Repair and Electrical (Construction) led the list reported in this sample (Table 1). Employers reported on employment classification of the OSUIT graduates within their organizations (Table 2); 65.7 percent were hourly employees; 10.0 percent were salaried; 4.3 percent were apprentices, trainees, or interns; none were listed as temporary employees or independent contractors; other employees were categorized either as flat/flag rate (5.7%) or were no longer employed (4.3%). One worked through a temporary employment service (1.4%). Employers reported 84.3 percent of the OSUIT graduates worked full time (Table 3). Concerning graduates time on the job (Table 4), 58.6 percent of OSUIT graduates had been employed by the organization between one and three years, and 18.6 percent had been employed for a year or less. A smaller proportion (14.3%) of OSUIT graduates had been employed for more than three years; this makes clear that some students had been with their employers well in advance of their graduation from OSUIT. Employers reported pay ranging from a low of $10,000 $14,999 (part time employees only) up to the $80,000 $84,999 range. Employers included internship pay since some internships continue well beyond graduation. Classification for particular careers was not well defined, such as for automotive graduates who earn pay at a flat/flag rate, or other graduates earning wait staff pay; these situations reflect certain challenges in gathering pay data that may need to be addressed in future versions of this survey. 6 Rating Scales Employers rated graduates on 23 skills using a five point scale with 1 = Not Competent, 2 = Adequate, 3 = Good, 4 = Competent, and 5 = Very Competent. The Results section of this report includes summarized responses (combination of the Good, Competent, and Very Competent responses) as a percentage of all skills ratings to yield Positive Ratings. Likewise, there were also four summary items utilizing a four point scale ranging from Strongly Agree to Strongly Disagree. The Results section includes summarized responses by combining the Agree and Strongly Agree responses. One additional item reflects employers satisfaction with the OSUIT graduate s performance in their organizations using a four point scale ranging from Highly Satisfied to Highly Dissatisfied (see Appendix A). Results Skills Ratings. Employers responding to the survey reported satisfaction with the performance level of OSUIT graduates and primarily rated their competence in their jobs as good, competent, or highly competent. The top five skills possessed by OSUIT graduates as reported by employers were Teamwork, Dependability, Integrity, and Use of Current Technologies. Following is a summary of individual item results summarized as positive ratings. Table 7: Skills ratings, highest to lowest Item Positive Rating Percent Teamwork 84.29% Dependability 82.86% Integrity 82.86% Use of current technologies 82.86% Current knowledge/methods/techniques 81.43% Dealing with people of diverse backgrounds 81.43% Performance of tasks to completion 81.43% Cooperation 80.00% Professionalism 80.00% Taking direction 80.00% Verbal communication 80.00% Listening skills 78.57% Sound judgment 78.57% Customer service skills 77.14% Expertise with tools 75.71% Information seeking 75.71% Initiative 75.71% Problem solving 75.71% Written communication 75.71% Time management 74.29% Independent decision-making 71.43% Problem recognition 71.43% Leadership skills 67.14% Following the skills ratings was the following item: Overall, how satisfied are you with the performance of this OSUIT Graduate employed by your company? 7 performance of OSUIT graduates on the job, 81.4 percent of employers were Somewhat Satisfied or Highly Satisfied ; 8.6 percent were Somewhat Dissatisfied or Highly Dissatisfied with graduates performance, and 10.0 percent did not respond (see Appendix A). Summary Scale Ratings. In consideration of OSUIT s potential impact on an organization beyond that of a single employee, additional summary items were included to determine if a more enduring effect was present. Employers reported a willingness to hire graduates and to recommend OSUIT graduates and OSUIT itself to anyone interested in pursuing a degree (Table 8). Table 8: Summary Items Please indicate your level of agreement with the following statements: I would hire an OSUIT graduate again. I would recommend OSUIT graduates to others. I would recommend OSUIT to anyone interested in pursuing a degree. Overall, I am satisfied with graduates from OSUIT. "Agree" or "Strongly Agree" 90.00% 87.14% 85.71% 85.71% Conclusion The technical, cognitive, and interpersonal skills gained by our graduates, as reflected by the employers who hire them, continue to reflect the character of OSUIT s mission. Some skills may, however, develop best in the context of the workplace and over a period of time. The highest rated strengths for OSUIT graduates as identified by these employers (in terms of positive responses) included Teamwork (84.3%), Dependability (82.9%), Integrity (82.9%), and Use of Current Technologies (82.9%). Employers also reported being satisfied with the OSUIT graduate in their employ (81.4%). Those supervisors or other individuals familiar with the job duties of these graduates appeared ready to recommend both OSUIT (85.7%) and its graduates (87.1%) to others. Further, these employers would hire graduates from OSUIT again (90.0%). Included are comparisons with prior years administrations of the Employer Survey; these results should be read with caution, as the characteristics of the respondent samples were substantially different for each administration year (Appendix B). 17 Data Issues Reports from 2014, 2015, and 2016 each had unique issues that likely affected the results: Employer Survey 2014 Graduate cohort summer/fall 2012 and spring Program advisory committee members as well as employers were asked to complete the Employer Survey generally on all OSUIT alumni employees. Graduates were not personally identified on the survey; instead, employers were asked to respond generally about all OSUIT graduates in their employ at the time of the survey. Employer Survey 2015 Graduate cohort summer/fall 2013 and spring 2014 Only supervisors identified by name from Graduate Exit Interview data were invited to participate, and each survey was sent to an employer of one personally identified (named) graduate of OSUIT. The resulting sample (n = 38) was rather small. Employer Survey 2016 Graduate cohort summer/fall 2014 and spring 2015 Surveys for this report were sent in error to employers of students who graduated during the academic year; this resulted in employers rating graduates 3 12 months after graduation rather than the months for previous analyses, and it gave graduates approximately 12 months less tenure on the job for the responses received by employers. As a result, it is likely that the shortened timespan between graduation and survey completion for this cohort may have influenced the results in unexpected ways. Employer Survey 2017 Canceled since survey would cover previous cohort. Employer Survey 2018 Data collection resumed with the Employer Survey 2018 report based on graduates from academic year (summer/fall 2016 and spring 2017). As you review the reports from the four years of Employer Survey administration, please take into account the differences in data collection mentioned above.
