Back once again for 2018, the Microlise Driver of the Year Awards will highlight the most talented HGV drivers working in the UK transport industry and acknowledge the vital work they do. The nomination process is now open, with categories available giving operators the chance to put their best drivers forward for recognition. The winners will be selected by our line-up of experienced judges based on information supplied through the online nomination form. Alongside these nominated categories, the headline Microlise Driver of the Year Award will once again be based on the analysis of telematics data and manager feedback. Through the work we have completed with The University of Nottingham we can identify the industry s top performers and with additional feedback from employers are able to create a final shortlist of drivers for each of our award categories. An independent panel will then review and debate the shortlist to select the winners. Microlise is very proud to run these awards and shine a light on the HGV drivers who play a critical role in the supply chain and regularly go unrecognised for the remarkable work they do, often in difficult and challenging conditions. We are pleased to be able to recognise their efforts and reward them for their contribution. Drivers really are at the heart of the transport industry and we want to use our unique position to showcase the best performers. 4 4 DATA ANALYSIS METHODOLOGY Microlise will again use the process established by the University of Nottingham s Advanced Data Analysis Centre. This will enable drivers from different sectors, vehicles, journeys and tasks to be compared in a fair and unbiased way, ultimately ranking those drivers who consistently perform well throughout the year. Drivers and companies will automatically be entered for these awards: + + Short Distance Long Distance Medium Distance + Overall Driver of the Year + Driver Excellence These categories are based purely on data collected by Microlise telematics solutions throughout the whole of OVERVIEW The aim of this analysis is to rank drivers who perform well throughout the year. The first task is to identify those who have driven consistently over the last 12 months. To qualify, drivers must: + + Drive miles during Complete 10+ journeys every quarter The qualifying drivers are split into separate groups, or clusters, to enable them to be ranked in a fair way as the number of events recorded by telematics is directly related to the type of driving. Those completing local multi-drop type journeys have a totally different footprint to those driving longer distances on motorways. Filtering data in this way ensures that drivers are not penalised for the types of mileage they regularly cover. Once the first stage of clustering (based on the overall type of driving by distance) is complete, additional clustering techniques are applied to put drivers with different distance profiles onto an even footing for ranking. Qualification thresholds are then identified based on event data. Drivers are removed from each cluster and the process repeated until a sufficiently small number of drivers are left. The driver and company names remain anonymous throughout the entire process. The Univeristy of Nottingham Advanced Data Analysis Centre

5 5 DATA ANALYSIS CLUSTERING BY DISTANCE The exact splits will be identified in the initial data analysis in January 2018, but typically drivers in the categories will have travelled: + + Short Distance <30k miles per year + + Medium Distance 31 60k miles per year + + Long Distance > 60k miles per year IDENTIFYING QUALIFICATION THRESHOLDS Once clustering based on the type of driving by distance is complete, cut-off thresholds are identified and some drivers will be disqualified based on the following events: + + Harsh braking Over revs + Over-speed duration + Excessive throttle Drivers who have a higher than average number of events per km are removed. This per km standardisation means that there is as much fairness as possible in the removal of drivers. Driving on a motorway creates less events per km than inner city driving, for instance. RANKING The process is repeated in each cluster, with the thresholds continually being tightened and drivers eliminated at each stage, until there are approximately 50 drivers left. INDEPENDENT JUDGING An independent expert judging panel will be appointed to produce a final shortlist of three drivers and winner across each award category. The judges will include: + + Bob Harbey Executive Director, Microlise + + James Hookham Deputy Chief Executive, Freight Transport Association + + Richard Burnett CEO, Road Haulage Association + + Sharon Clancy Editor, Motion Magazine + + Steve Hobson Editor, Motor Transport The data of those short-listed are then qualified via questionnaires completed by the employers of each driver, helping to provide further evidence and indicators that result in a driver being named as a winner.

6 6 DATA CATEGORIES SHORT DISTANCE Travelling less than 30,000 miles per year most drivers in this category will carry out local, multi-drop type journeys. According to Michael s manager he started out working with them via an agency as a van driver, but because of his positive attitude and great knowledge of Central London, he was quickly placed on the company s high profile accounts Winner Michael Young, Culina Michael has also shown great care in training other members of staff. Two previous driver friends of his have now become employed full time with the company as van drivers in Central London. MEDIUM DISTANCE & OVERALL WINNER In this category drivers will carry out a mixture of journeys and typically cover between 31,000 60,000 miles per year. Rafal s manager described him as a totally reliable 100% committed driver and a credit to the SBSC driving team. Trained in-house by one of Samworth s DVSA instructors Rafal s manager said that he proved to be a natural driver Winner Rafal Kolanko, Samworth Brothers Rafal also won the Overall Microlise Driver of the Year Award, which was presented at the Microlise Transport Conference in front of delegates at the Ricoh Arena.

7 7 DATA CATEGORIES LONG DISTANCE Drivers in this category will typically drive in access of 60,000 miles per year, travelling a high number of motorway miles. Peter s manager described him as an honest extremely reliable member of the team who deserved the award as he always goes the extra mile for the customer, adding that he is the epitomy of a long serving, hard-working reliable driver Winner Peter Jones, Chamberlain Transport DRIVER EXCELLENCE This will be awarded to the operator with the highest percentage of drivers in the final 1000 as identified in the overall Driver of the Year Process. The Driver Excellence Award recognises that this achievement is indicative of an ongoing commitment to improve driving performance. Last year Chamberlain Transport picked up this much coveted award Winner Chamberlain Transport

8 8 NOMINATION BASED AWARDS The following categories allow transport operators to put forward their best drivers for an award and are based purely on the information provided. 9 9 THE NOMINATED AWARDS YOUNG DRIVER OF THE YEAR This award aims to promote the importance of bringing young drivers into the industry. It recognises that there are some extremely talented individuals out there who deserve recognition for the great work that they are doing. Who can enter this award? + + Any driver aged 30 and under on December 31 st 2017 What we will need to know: + + How long has this person been driving? + + What is their career history? + + What is it about their character that makes them a good driver? + + Why are they a deserving winner? + + How good is their driving performance based on your A-G reports (or similar reporting methods) Laura Farnsworth, Samworth Brothers. Laura s ambition to be an HGV driver began when she worked in a petrol station forecourt aged 17. After driving a delivery van for Sainsbury s she started her HGV driver training with Samworths and passed her test first time. Her manager describes her as determined, enthusiastic, focussed, cheerful and friendly and a great example to new trainees.

10 10 THE NOMINATED AWARDS MOST IMPROVED DRIVER There is always room for improvement and this award sets out to reward those who embrace this attitude and put it into action. They may be experienced or new to the profession, they may also have embraced new technology or systems to improve performance. Catherine Eastbourne, Warburtons. Catherine has been a professional driver for over 38 years, a career that began in the Army. The transport manager told us that she always looks on the positive side and requests regular debriefs on performance, using this feedback to improve technical driving skills and always has a desire to learn new techniques and adapt to new technology.

11 11 THE NOMINATED AWARDS EXTRA MILE This is the driver who transport managers would clone if they could. They are always willing to go the extra mile to get the job done or help others to achieve high standards. Stuart is described as a very hardworking individual who always goes the extra mile in his duties with unflagging enthusiasm and commitment regularly helping others. His manager said if I could clone him and have one at each site my job would be a breeze.

12 12 THE NOMINATED AWARDS HGV HERO This award recognises the important job that HGV drivers carry out in the community, and will be awarded to the driver who carries out a heroic deed to help a member of the public whilst carrying out their day to day job. Who can enter this award? + + This award is open to any driver What we will need to know: + + What is it about their character that makes them stand out? + + Why are they a deserving winner? + + Detail of the instance when they acted like a hero John Harrington, DHL and Robert Brown, Eddie Stobart. HGV Heroes 2017 John Harrington Robert Brown John was flagged down by a member of the public and found an elderly gentleman suffering a heart attack at the side of the road. He helped the man until the emergency services arrived and was praised for saving the man s life. Robert noticed a car being driven erratically on the M11 before smashing into another car. He stopped his vehicle and used it to shield the car from further impact. There was a young girl trapped in the back and her mother was very frantic so Robert climbed into the smashed car and reassured the girl until the emergency services arrived.

13 13 THE NOMINATED AWARDS LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT The most understated drivers, who have been dedicated to their job and constantly deliver a great level of performance are often overlooked. This award recognises the driver who is often an ambassador for their company, having consistently delivered excellent performance and loyalty over a long period of time. Richard Ireson, Tesco. Lifetime Achievement Winner 2017 A Tesco heavy goods vehicle carrying out deliveries. A professional driver for 43 years with 28 years service for Tesco Richard has been described as the go to person who is always willing to help others. He has only had 3 days off sick since 1989 and is never without a smile on his face, the epitome of what a driver should be.

14 14 THE PRIZE The independent judges will select a final shortlist of three drivers for each category who will enjoy an exciting track day prize.

15 15 AN INVITATION TO OUR AWARDS PRESENTATION All drivers in the final short-list will be invited to a VIP awards presentation at The Ricoh Arena on the evening of 15th May 2018 where the winners will be announced. The awards will also be featured at the free-toattend Microlise Transport Conference at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry on 16th May The overall winner will be presented with their trophy in front of 1,200+ delegates.
