1 Induction Arrangements for Schools when employing a Newly Qualified Teacher -17

2 Where schools are considering employing an NQT from September they need to fully understand the implications and requirements upon both the NQT and the school to ensure that appropriate arrangements are in place. An NQT is any teacher who has not yet completed their statutory Induction period regardless of how recently they qualified. (380 school sessions. Each session is equivalent to half a day). Schools employing an NQT (including who are working as short-term supply teachers) must provide the NQT with day-to-day support throughout their induction. The Headteacher must inform the Education Workforce Council (EWC) with an Induction Notification Form (within 10 days of NQT starting in the school). Schools must provide evidence during the induction period that will contribute to the final assessment of the NQT by the Appropriate Body. It is the headteacher s responsibility to ensure that this support is provided and that a School Based Mentor (SBM) is allocated to each NQT. Schools must ensure compliance with the requirements that do not teach for more than 90 per cent of the time that a teacher at the school would be expected to teach. This is in addition to the statutory 10 per cent non-contact time for PPA. Schools are eligible for funding to support this reduction in teaching timetable and this can be claimed on a termly basis. Funding is administered by the EWC: further information and claim forms can be found on the EWC website at 2

3 Aide Memoire for schools: Ensure that a School Based Mentor is allocated to each NQT. Wherever possible this should be a member of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and have a proven track record as a classroom practitioner. Inform the EWC with an Induction Notification Form (within 10 days of the NQT starting in the school). Ensure the NQT is registered with EWC in the category of Teacher and has downloaded their induction profile which is accessed by the NQT, School Based Mentor and External Mentor (EM) to support and record induction. Ensure the NQT is allocated 10 per cent additional time which will be used for meetings with Mentors and CPD time, including attendance at Induction Training Programme (dates below). Ensure the School Based Mentor is allocated appropriate time which will be used for meetings with the NQT and External Mentor. These should be recorded by both the NQT and the School Based Mentor (dates below). 3
