(from June 05 board retreat) describes what the organization will look like in the future an inspirational description of present conditions and where the organization is going tomorrow an extension of the emotions and feelings of the people in an organization a guiding image of success formed in terms of a contribution to society stretches an organization s members expectations, aspirations, and performance III Enduring Goals At this writing several enduring goals, noted in square brackets, are still under development. These goals articulate how we achieve our mission. They are not the same as strategic goals in that they have a much longer shelf life. These goals are also needed for the institutional assessment plan required by Middle States. IV Values - No action required What is a vision statement? (from June 05 board retreat) Values are qualities that are unique about our college. They are part of our past and present, and need to be retained for the future. They provide stabilizing touchstones as the organization changes. V.1 Strategic Initiative Each senior VP is the leader of a strategic initiative for their respective areas. In this cell of the template, please provide a name for your initiative. It will be fairly broad, reflecting each Sr VP s areas of responsibility, and the enduring goals developed above. As agreed to at our November 8 meeting, it should be stated as a proper sentence. 2

3 V.2 Introductory Text Provide one or two introductory paragraphs that explain why this is an important initiative. What external trends and demands we may be responding to, what our philosophy and assumptions are, and what future needs we are addressing. This is an opportunity for each Sr VP to express their vision. V.3 Strategic Objectives Objectives describe what we want to look like and be like in the future. They are the destination. In our case, these are the big challenges we will address over the five year life of the strategic plan. (Objectives will be achieved through the strategies described in V.5, below.) V.4 Success Measures These measures are how we define victory. They give us the evidence that we have achieved our objectives and that our plan is (or is not) working. Quantitative measures should have specific targets (Example Increase degree completion rates for transfer students, per Student Right to Know Act definition to 25%). Qualitative measures should be specific and finite. (You may want to think of these measures as lag indicators, or the cumulative result of lead indicators defined in the success measures for the first year priorities explained below.) V.5 First Year Priorities and Strategies This is a living, breathing five year plan that we will achieve and assess one year at a time. Our long term objectives for the five year plan are described above in V.3. This section provides detail on the strategies we will employ during the first year of the plan. Strategies are the careful choices we make about what to do and how to use resources in order to achieve our objectives and ultimately the enduring goals and mission. The format of this section closely emulates the S.M.A.R.T. approach used for developing our annual college goals, so it should be self explanatory. Note also that this section contains success measures. These are the lead indicators - their cumulative effect produces the measurable result for the long term objectives. This form contains a field not used in the S.M.A.R.T. approach named Resource Needs. At this point in the process use your judgment and the following codes to complete this field: H + High Cost, M + Medium Cost, L= Low Cost, N = No Cost. 3
