4 1. Introduction Industry Attachment is an important learning part for studying the programme and also is the graduation requirement. Students are required to take 160 hours for Industry Attachment in the relevant organizations / associations of their academic studies during the year break between Year 1 and Year 2 or throughout their Year 2 of studies. The industry attachment provides opportunities to students in gaining working experiences in local commercial / NGO sectors during the two years study. Through the out-of-classrooms learning, students can transfer their learning (both knowledge and skills) in the first year and practice in the real-life working situation during the attachment. This working experience turns to be an asset for helping them to get jobs easily upon graduation. A member from the programme team will be assigned as Industry Attachment (IA) Co-ordinator for guiding and coaching students to carry out industry attachment. Also, an IA supervisor in the work place is expected to be provided by the attached organization. 2. Objectives The Industry Attachment will enable students to: 2.1. strengthen their academic and generic skills and knowledge in a real-world workplace environment; 2.2. transfer their work-based skills, such as independent learning skills, problem solving, planning and organizing, decision making and time management, developed during Year 1 study to the real working environment; 2.3. apply broad general skills, including interpersonal skills, language skills, creativity and critical thinking, and recognize their interrelationship with the requirements of specific workplace activities; 2.4. acquire experimentally certain workplace skills, habits, routines, attitudes and values, such as reliable attendance, punctuality, responsibility, ability to meet deadlines and expectations, effective relationships with IA supervisors, co-operative relationships in mandated team placements and handling difficult or unfamiliar interpersonal situations; 2.5. recognize areas of generic skill learning for further development; and 2.6. experience the realities of the paraprofessional workplace as a personal pointer to further career orientation. 1

5 3. Searching for Placements There are two ways for locating placements of Industry Attachment: 3.1 Programme initiated; and 3.2 Self-search 4. Procedures 4.1 Before the Attachment Programme initiated The programme team will search for relevant placements by his/her personal / official links open for all students application. Upon receiving the students applications from the open recruitment, the IA Coordinator(s) will forward applications to the attached organizations for consideration and associate selection / interview arrangement, if necessary. The attached organizations may review the individual application with reference to the following area for confirming the placements:- Level of languages proficiency (Chinese and English) Previous work experience Academic qualification Personal interests and hobbies Personality and long-term objectives Self-search To provide flexibility, students can also search placements in relevant field / industry / organization themselves. Students are required to fill in the Self search Application Form (Appendix 1) and submit to the IA Co-ordinator(s) for approval in advance. In order to ensure the quality of industry attachment, records of self-search placements are restricted to fulfillment of the following requirements:- (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) (f) The job nature should be related to the students academic study; The working environment and conditions of the placement must be safe for the students; All activities and assignments of the placement must be legal; Students should not pay to any one in order to get the placement; An IA supervisor from the attached organization should be assigned to the student in the workplace; and A placement must be attached to an organization, institution or company. 2

6 4.2 During the Attachment No matter which approach (i.e. programme initiated and self-search) be adopted, students are required to take following actions during the attachment : Work Record Students are required to record their attached hours in the Work Record Sheet (Appendix 2) and seek the IA supervisors certifying and signing in the record sheet on weekly basis. This work sheet should submit to the IA Co-ordinator by two phases on (a) interim in the middle when completing about 80 hours of the placement; and (b) final when completed all 160 hours placement Work Journal Further, students are required to submit the work journal after each placement. Students can express their views and opinions about their work for self-reflection purpose. The journal will be submitted with the respective work record sheet to the IA Co-ordinator for comments Regular Contacts During the attachment period, IA Co-ordinator may visit students or make telephone calls enquiring their placement information and progress. 4.3 At the End of the Attachment Performance Review Upon completion of a particular attachment, IA supervisor concerned is invited to provide written comments and feedback on students performance in the Performance Review Report (Appendix 4) Reflection Report Upon completion of the whole industry attachment, students are required to submit a Reflection Report together with Summary Work Record of Industry Attachment (Appendix 5) to the IA Co-ordinator. The deadline for the submission is set on Friday of Week 13 in Semester 2 of Year 2 study. The reflection report should contain following information:- (a) Description of the Organization(s) Where is it located, type of business, number of employees, etc. (b) (c) (d) History of the Organization(s) When founded, expansion, number of locations, future plans, etc. Organization Structure(s) Charts and description of the management and departments Job Responsibilities Description of where you are working, colleagues, your general duties, etc. 3

7 (e) (f) (g) (h) Evidence of work done Photos, leaflets or any other evidence of work can be attached to the report. The Industry What do you know about the industry? What do you think of the external threats and opportunities of this industry? What would you suggest to do to take these opportunities and to avoid these threats? Yourselves What have you learnt from the attachment? What is your career orientation? Is there any change from the previous one? 5. Guidelines of the Attachments 5.1. Students can work for more than one organization to accumulate the required 160 working hours; 5.2. Students can work during the semester break between Year 1 and Year 2 or throughout their 2 years of studies as long as the required 160 working hours have been met; 5.3. The 160 working hours can be made up a number of tasks in different organizations or a single organization. However, each task must not less than 10 working hours; and 5.4 Apart from the attachment to external organizations, students relevant work in support to the programme and functions of the Unit which meet objectives as enlisted in section 2 above, can be considered as suitable industry attachment. This special arrangement should be approved by the IA Co-ordinator(s). 6. Role of IA Supervisors The role of the organizations of the industry attachment is to: provide students with opportunities to undergo on-the-job training; assign students with job duties as appropriate; ensure students a working environment in compliance with Hong Kong employment law; provide a healthy and safety working condition to the placement students; give supervision and guidance to students on work-related matters; and co-operate with the Institute to monitor and evaluate students performance (Appendix 4). 7. Role of the industry attachment co-ordinator The role of the IA Co-ordinator is to: ensure the quality of the students self-sought placement opportunity and give approval; assign students with job duties as appropriate; 4

8 monitor students progress and well-being during the industry attachment; review students journal and work record regularly; assist student to handle crisis if discussion between IA supervisor(s) and students is not possible or helpful; and during the attachment period, may visit students or make telephone calls to them for get any update on students placement. 8. Pre-attachment Briefing A pre-attachment briefing would be held at the programme assembly to give students well preparation for their work. Besides, participating organizations of the Industry Attachment may organize briefing sessions before the start of the placement. 9. Terms and Conditions The Industry Attachment is normally on non-paid basis; The level of responsibility and type of work for the placement are subject to students relevant skills and abilities, and the assigning by the attached organizations; During the attachment, students are regarded as the organization s employees. Therefore, students will be supervised the same as other employees in the organizations; Throughout the attachment, students progress and well-being will be carefully monitored by both IA Co-ordinator(s) and the IA supervisors. 10. Work Ethics The work ethics is a cultural norm that places positive moral value on working hard and doing a good job. Employers are always seeking employees who value work ethics. In order to obtain satisfactory comments from the IA supervisor (s), students should pay attention to the following work ethics: honesty punctuality integrity commitment respect teamwork orientation 11. Assessment Criteria Industry attachment is part of the curriculum of the programme and also the graduation requirement. In order to complete the attachment, students must act in compliance with the followings: completion of 160 working hours of approved jobs; work along with the expectation of employee(s) at the satisfactory level; and submission of the work record, journal, summary work record and reflection report by Friday of Week 13 in Semester 2 of Year 2 study 5

9 12. Procedures of Handling Crisis If students have encountered any problems or difficulties in the workplaces, they should first approach their immediate IA supervisors for discussion. However, if the discussion couldn t solve the problem, students should then approach their responsible IA Co-ordinator for advice.
