Being a successful HR leader right now is about being a skilled coach and influencer in your organisation. Kate Keaney, head of HR services and talent & organisation development, Connor

Personal development for HR professionals The HR director and head of HR role is increasingly complex and is often reported as a lonely place to be. Partnering with the CEO or managing director and the rest of the senior management team can be challenging, often requiring strong influencing skills to get things done. The role can be about driving culture, leadership and performance change across the organisation as well as being drawn into the detail of individual issues and problems. The HR business partner (HRBP) role varies according to the sector and organisation and is generally a term used to describe mid-level through to HR director roles. It has become increasingly popular for organisations to implement a business partner structure with the intention of providing strategic and high value people and organisation development services. However, for a variety of reasons many HR functions do not achieve optimum results and many individuals making the move into HRBP roles struggle to step out of the day to day operational work and into a truly strategic partnering role. Connor offers you a programme of training, development, support and networking specifically designed for the HR function and the unique challenges of these roles. Grounded in the Ulrich model, it develops the skills, mindset and resilience needed to deliver and operate as a true strategic partner. We provide personal development for the following: Individuals leading the people strategy and HR function such as HR directors and heads of HR Individuals partnering or supporting leaders and line managers such as HR business partners and HR managers.

Personal development for HR directors and heads of HR In a volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous environment, HR leaders are often pulled into multiple and complex areas of responsibility. Delivering organisational change and managing people issues takes time and comes with a big workload. This does not allow individuals in these roles the time to think, plan and lead the strategic HR agenda. Our personal development for HR leaders is in three areas: coaching and mentoring consulting networking. We take a look at each of these in more detail. Coaching and mentoring One to one coaching and mentoring can have a huge impact on results. Our experienced coaches will give you the tools to think and behave differently, enabling you to perform at your best. This can be purist coaching, supporting and challenging you to enable your own thinking. Alternatively or in addition, we can work with you in a mentoring capacity, working through specific issues and giving you more advice and guidance. We provide support on a vast range of topics, including but not limited to: communication challenge and influence leadership skills strategic thinking purpose and values motivation and drive developing your own coaching skills. Our comprehensive coaching offer supports individuals throughout their development journey. We have a range of coaches and can cover all styles and development needs. You will be peer matched with an experienced coach who also has experience of senior HR leadership roles. Our standard approach to coaching and mentoring is to provide you with a coach for six two hour sessions, which we recommend being delivered within a period of three months.

Networking Connor HR leaders forums are exclusive, free breakfast events for senior HR people. Our clients in HR leadership roles tell us their job is broader than ever so they wear multiple hats. They act as a confidante to their peers, a role model for their team, a leader within the business and as change instigators and policy implementers. Importantly they are also a skilful coach and influencer, supporting their organisation to reach its full potential. They deliver all of this while remaining personally resilient and helping others to do the same. Because of the nature of their roles, HR leaders don't always have close peers to share their challenges and explore creative solutions with. A Connor HR leaders forum is a place to have safe, detailed conversations about the real-life challenges faced by senior HR professionals. You can read about forthcoming forums as well as what was discussed at previous forums here. You will have the opportunity to attend a minimum of three HR leaders forums each year. Events take place in central London and typically run from 8.30am to 11.00am. I enjoy these forums because people s challenges are similar no matter how different our industries and experiences are. It s refreshing and I feel better. HR director, luxury goods company

Personal development for HR business partners and HR managers There are many individuals with an HRBP or HR manager title, but often they are not operating at that level for various organisation, function or personal reasons. They become embedded in operational HR activities such as employee relations, reactive line manager advice and administration. These activities take considerable time and shouldn t be ignored, but when they occupy the business partner they get in the way of driving a strategic HR agenda to improve business performance. These activities can be the comfort zone of traditional HR advisors and personnel managers who haven t yet made the step up. Instead this work should be transferred to HR operations. Our personal development for HR business partners and managers is in two areas: coaching and mentoring development and training. We support on a vast range of topics, including but not limited to: communication challenge and influence leadership skills strategic thinking purpose and values motivation and drive developing your own coaching skills.

Development and training To help HR business partners and managers to develop and support them to add greater value we offer a variety of workshop based development modules that can be selected dependent on your needs: The strategic role of an HR business partner or manager Stepping out of the detail and increasing line management capability Operating models and organisation design Driving and enabling engagement Cultural change and change leadership Strategic talent management Personal impact and communication Influencing senior colleagues Resilience and emotional intelligence Coaching skills for HR business partners and managers. Our standard approach to development and training is to provide individuals or a team of operational HR people with access to any of the above workshops on a half day basis.
