2 ABOUT Believe it or not. From your very first day in a leadership role, you can choose to be confident and successful. You can choose to adopt a principled approach to leadership and management so that the demands are manageable. You can choose to manage your energy rather than your time. These decisions will help you to stay fresh and able to deliver your best. As a proactive new leader, you can also choose to sit comfortably on top of the steam roller rather than submit to being squashed flat under the pressure of its rollers...and screaming for help. AUDIENCE This full day workshop is suitable for emerging, acting, tired, frustrated or continuously improving managers of just about any project, program, facility, department, group or organisation. It s about building your confidence and sharing tips for dealing with some of those tricky challenges that come with the territory. OUTLINE We will explore the leadership and management stuff that is not in the book. You know, the stuff that you will learn over years of experience including: 1. FIRST IMPRESSIONS COUNT Build team trust, respect and productivity from the outset by engaging with warmth and openness Understand your own contribution to create a positive, healthy work environment ; a place that people want to work 2. LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT Consider your role and how it adds value for your team and for your own leader. Where do you fit into the bigger picture of your department, division or whole organisation? Consider leadership and management styles in the context of Goleman s work on emotional intelligence Too hard? Too soft? Just right? Running around like a headless chook? Choose to lead and manage strategically, consistently and predictably 3. MANAGE YOUR ENERGY, NOT YOUR TIME Manage people so that they want to help you Invite rather than demand communicate to be understood, to achieve outcomes etc. Feed the feedback loop Make catch up meetings a pleasurable learning experience Manage the meeting treadmill 4. FINDING THE OPPORTUNITY IN THE THINGS THAT GO PEAR-SHAPED Discuss elephant in the room Error post mortem Break bad news to build trust and respect Know when you need help and ask for it 5. DISCUSS CASE STUDIES IN CONFIDENCE
