1 Role Description Inspector Cluster Department/ Agency Division/ Branch/Unit Finance, Services & Innovation Department of Finance, Services & Innovation (DFSI) Better Regulation SafeWork NSW Classification/Grade/Band Inspector 1/3 ANZSCO Code PCAT Code Date of Approval June 2015 Primary purpose of the role Support the identification, planning and delivery of work, health and safety (WHS), wellbeing, workers compensation and return to work (RTW) strategies through the provision of general information, advice, assistance, education, compliance & enforcement services that contributes to the reduction of harm and or improved support for injured workers in NSW workplaces. Key accountabilities Participate in the development, delivery and evaluation of SafeWork NSW s risk-based prevention and response programs, which includes activities such as workplace visits, verification activities, and audits ensuring customer service standards and specified timeframes are met. Conduct presentations, workshops, advisory services and participate in forums to engage customers, stakeholders and industry to achieve better standards in WHS, wellbeing, workers compensation and RTW. Identify, investigate and address issues of non-compliance with legislation and recommend / direct appropriate strategies to secure compliance. Respond to fatality, serious injury and high risk incidents, including participation in the after hours emergency response service to address workplace health and safety risks. Provide practical, technical and operational advice to co-regulators, other government agencies and internal business units. Prepare accountable records to ensure compliance with legislation and communicate outcomes to relevant customers. Maintain up-to-date knowledge and understanding of relevant legislation and associated guidance material, policy and procedures. Key challenges Engaging workplaces to improve WHS, wellbeing, workers compensation and RTW performance and compliance, given the diverse levels of commitment and understanding across New South Wales. Identifying and applying a mix of positive motivators, compliance monitoring and sanctions to encourage and secure compliance. Role Description Inspector 1/3

2 Presenting practical technical advice and assistance consistent with legislation, policy and procedures, in a way that is easily understood by workplaces and industry whose expertise is in other fields, particularly when related to legislative interpretation. Role dimensions Decision making This role has autonomy and makes decisions that are under their direct control. It refers to a Manager decisions that require significant change to program outcomes or timeframes or are likely to escalate or require submission to a higher level of management. This role is fully accountable for the delivery of work assignments within legislative requirements, on time and to expectations in terms of quality, deliverables and outcomes.
