The core values of Kono

Kono values Rangatiratanga, Kaitiakitanga, Maanakitanga, Whanaungatanga Integrity, Guardianship, Hospitality, Relationships The core values of Kono are derived from our unique identity and Mäori culture. They underpin everything we do. The values unite us and ensure we act with integrity and commitment. Although the core values are ancient, they continue to have relevance in a changing world. They are the constants that bind people, land, water and natural resources together.

What do the values mean? Kono is a Mäori company. We provide the highest quality food and beverages. The land, water and natural resources that are the lifeblood of Kono are the responsibility of the Mäori families who are the traditional owners of those resources. Because of this, our core values and the language we use to describe them are derived from Te Ao Mäori the Mäori World. The word Kono describes a traditional woven flax basket used for holding and presenting food. Kono represents the best of Mäori culture. This culture is encapsulated in the values of Kono. This document explains the core values of Kono. It illustrates our commitment to implementing the values in all aspects of our work.

Rangatiratanga [Integrity] Ko te piko o te mähuri, tërä te tupu o te Räkau. The way the sapling is shaped, determines how the tree grows. The value of Rangatiratanga (integrity) is grounded in the aspirations and ideals of the ancestors of those Mäori families who created Kono. Kono is part of a legacy that reaches back hundreds of years. Our people are remarkable in their ability to create opportunities for growth and success by utilising our natural environment. The responsibility within Kono to be great and act with integrity is immense. We have come a long way and there is still much to achieve. In order to accomplish our aspirations we must act consistently with the core values of Kono.

Leadership We are innovative, adaptable and passionate about what we do. We expect to be successful and we work hard as a team to produce results. We harness the talents of our people to ensure the sustainable use of our land, water and natural resources. We will continue to grow our success as an organisation through nurturing and supporting our people to reach their full potential. This is the essence of great leadership. Integrity The best people are part of Kono because they are passionate about it and because of our compelling vision to be the best indigenous food and beverage company in the world. Our people act with integrity towards each other, our customers and our associates. Everything we do enhances the mana (reputation) of Kono and by association our families and communities. Quality We value our reputation for providing premium products to the world. We are proud of our ability to provide products of exceptional quality. Our products and services enrich the lives of our customers and make life enjoyable. It is important to us to act sustainably as we produce, develop and provide products. In everything we do, we act consistently with the values of Kono. We understand our customers make choices based on quality. They also understand the impact their choices have on the environment. We want them to know they have made the right choice with Kono.

Kaitiakitanga [Guardianship] Toitü te marae a Täne, toitü te marae a Tangaroa, toitü te Iwi. When the realm of Täne and the domain of Tangaroa are sustained, so too is the future of our people. The value of Kaitiakitanga recognises that we are responsible for the health and vitality of our land, water and natural resources, now and in the future. We manage our ancestral treasures (taonga) sustainably, in a way that creates opportunities for growth and prosperity for everyone associated with Kono. This commitment is reflected in our TIKA policy, which is integrated throughout Kono. TIKA ensures our decisions are driven by efficiency, the best use of our energy and resources and long-term sustainability. Connected to the value of Kaitiakitanga is our commitment to longevity of people, resources and relationships with our customers and associates.

Responsibility We have a responsibility to the Mäori families who own the land, water and natural resources that are the lifeblood of Kono to protect and enhance their resources, now and for future generations. We will achieve this through the sustainable and efficient production and development of goods and services. We are conscious of the need to ensure Kono is trusted by its people, customers and associates to make the right decisions to ensure success while caring for our environment. Accountability We are an efficient organisation, focused on our people, our resources and our environment. We make decisions that benefit our people, communities and environment. We are accountable to our people for the decisions we make that affect them now and in the future. Identity and heritage Our unique history and identity is integral to our success. It s the reason for our existence. We are committed to telling our story and integrating it into all aspects of Kono so our staff, customers and associates value our identity and heritage. We go out in the world conscious of our role as representatives of Kono and its unique history.

Manaakitanga [Hospitality] He aha te mea nui o te Ao? He tangata, He tangata, He tangata! What is most important in the world? It is people, people, people! The value of Manaakitanga encapsulates care and respect for people and relationships, including the natural environment. Manaakitanga governs the way we interact with one another. We understand that everything we do has a reciprocal and corresponding effect.

The Maori art of hospitality An essential part of Mäori culture is our desire to feed and nurture people. We demonstrate our love and respect for people by providing them with outstanding food and service. We welcome, sustain and inspire people through providing the best food and beverages our environment can produce. This is one of our greatest strengths. Exceptional New Zealand products For hundreds of years, our traditional land and sea has supplied our families with outstanding food. Our environment has sustained us for many generations and provided we act consistently with the core values, it will continue to do so. Our exceptional natural environment and the commitment of our people set us apart from the rest of the world. Our land and sea produces superb natural and healthy food that we share with the world. Our goal at Kono is to provide the highest quality food and beverages that our environment can produce, made by people who love what they do. Sharing our products with pride We are so proud of our products. We know that they are the result of hard work, dedication and expertise. When we go out into the world, we are excited to share our products and our knowledge about their origins. We think it is a pleasure and privilege to eat and drink our products and tell the story behind them and we want to share that pleasure with others.

Whanaungatanga [Relationships] Ehara taku toa i te takitahi, he takitini kë. Success is not individual, but collective. The value of Whanaungatanga is focused on great relationships with each other and with our environment. At the heart of this value is the recognition of the need to build longstanding and positive relationships with each other, our customers and associates. This will ensure our success. The value of Whanaungatanga appreciates that all human and natural elements in the world are interrelated and have special value. The land, water and natural resources on which Kono depends are as significant to its success as its people. Because of this understanding, we have a deep respect for our environment and our connection to the natural world.

It s all about relationships Our relationships with one another and with our environment are at the heart of everything that we do. We are culturally competent and accountable for everything we do. Family We are a Mäori family business.
