Principle Accountabilities Provide leadership, strategic direction and management of the University s faculty-based technical service, supporting practical-based courses in science and engineering, sports science, arts and humanities (including media, fashion and theatre) education, and health related disciplines. Responsible for the development and delivery of a high quality University technical service, to support the University s strategic objectives Leadership, Strategic Planning and Development Develop and implement technical service strategic objectives, operational plans that support, contribute to, and integrate with the strategic objectives of the faculties and the University. Review working practices to ensure that resources are continuously optimised, deliver continuous improvement and are fit for purpose. Work collaboratively with Faculty Pro-Vice Chancellors, Faculty Heads of Research and Knowledge Exchange, Heads of University Centres for Research and Knowledge Exchange, Heads of Departments/Schools and Directors/Heads of Professional Services at the earliest stages of local and institutional strategic planning to ensure investment in technical resources and services are maximised.

3 Leadership, Strategic Planning and Development continued... Provide transformational and change-orientated leadership to the University's faculty based technical service, focussed on developing the service into a cohesive, agile and flexible workforce. Advise the Director of Faculty Student and Academic Services, through plans and business cases on resources needed to achieve technical service strategic objectives, that demonstrate impact and value for money (VfM). To ensure, through regular benchmarking, external engagement and other means, that technical service provision is innovative and sector-leading. To provide reports to the Director of Faculty Student and Academic Services, other senior officers, Faculty Executive Groups, and Faculty/University committees and groups, that raise the profile of technical services, ensures the work of the service is well-understood and demonstrates the contribution the service makes to the University s key strategic objectives. Leadership and management of technical service reviews and change projects to ensure the service is effective, efficient and appropriately supports the academic requirements of the faculties and the University. Service Delivery To manage a high quality, efficient and effective faculty-based technical service that delivers best benefit and VfM against established targets and budgets. Create and develop feedback mechanisms for service-users that support the delivery, development and enhancement of services and creates a culture of continuous improvement. Develop a strong customer service focus and drive for excellent service delivery across the service. Develop consistent strategies across the service, e.g. standard operating procedures/ modus operandi and clear service level expectations. Management To direct the development of staff within technical services, promoting and encouraging all staff members involvment in CPD provision. Working with both the internal Learning and Development team and external organisations to provide opportunties for personal and career development. Develop and promote professional standards and a collaborative style of working within technical services, ensuring the development of effective partnerships amongst technical staff, with academic and professional service colleagues across the University.

Develop and enhance the performance of staff across the service, utilising mechanisms such as systematic workforce and succession planning, skills audits and the identification of future talent piplines to ensure and maintain a high quality service. To seek and promote external engagement within the HE sector to maximise opportunities to enhance the profile and reputation of the University. Health and Saftey To maintain an overview of the systems, procedures and working practices in compliance with Health and Safety legislation and relevant University policies in relation to the technical service teams within the Faculties. To attend as a member of the University s Health and Safety Committee and other committees agreed as appropriate to the effective conduct of the post. To ensure that all technical staff are made aware of their duties and responsibilities regarding Health and Safety and are adequately trained to discharge such duties. To have overall responsibility for ensuring technical managers assist and advise Faculty Pro-Vice Chancellors in discharging their responsibilities to review and develop systems, procedures and working practices in compliance with Health and Safety legislation and relevant University policies generally. To have overall responsibility for ensuring technical managers complete timely and regular Health and Safety risk assessments and and provide appropriate guidance to managers and supervisors regarding the impact on the work process and safety of team members. To ensure that the University s technical services are audited in respect of Health and Safety management. Miscellaneous You will ensure that appropriate management systems and procedures are in place to meet your health and safety duties and responsibilities contained within the University s health and safety policy. In particular you will ensure that appropriate risk assessments are carried out in respect of significant hazards and that safety inspections are undertaken on at least an annual cycle in each workplace under your control. You are responsible for: assessing and managing risk for all elements of work within your own area and for ensuring effective risk management processes are in place across your department applying the University s Equal Opportunities Policy in your own area of responsibility and in your general conduct promoting high levels of customer care within your own areas of work promoting public engagement as a key element of community involvement

5 Miscellaneous continued... supporting and engaging in the University s drive for continuous improvement through people management and development assessing the training and development needs of each member of departmental staff to ensure they are adequately supported in relation to their work responsibilities promoting and engaging in the University s strategy and actions on environmental sustainability You are expected to engage with the PDR process in relation to the setting of your own objectives with your manager to assist in the monitoring of your performance. In addition, you are expected to deliver the PDR process for your departmental staff and set appropriate objectives to assist in performance monitoring and the development of the individual. Such other relevant duties commensurate with the grade of the post as may be assigned by the Manager in agreement with you. Such agreement should not be unreasonably withheld. You may be, with reasonable notice, required to work at any of the Manchester Metropolitan University sites. Review This is a description of the job at the time of issue.
