There are plenty of roles available within the sector. In any company, you could be placed in Operations (transactions, settlements, financial and performance reporting); Investing (research and analysis, buying and selling); Customer Communications (sales, marketing and customer support), Safeguarding (compliance, legal, risk internal audit); HR and business finance; or IT. Tell me more about: Operations The operations division is the cash register of fund management. It is where the customers purchases and sales of funds are processed. Money flows are monitored and accounted for; fund portfolios are valued and the dealing prices recorded; dividends are calculated and paid. Trades made by the portfolio managers are also processed together with any changes in the companies they invest in such as mergers. The operations division may also monitor and measure the performance. Good operations people have a detailed understanding of how the business works. They promote efficiency. Investing The central task of an investment management company is to manage money on behalf of customers. So-called portfolio managers and their teams put companies and governments under the microscope. They analyse the strengths and weaknesses of markets and businesses to find investment opportunities which fit the needs of their customers. They watch their investments carefully, building models to test what might happen and as investors they can also take an active role in them. For this area of the business, a lot of firms prefer to look at graduates or individuals with previous experience.

5 Customer Communications The focus in customer communications is to grow and develop the business by attracting new customers, to look after those already invested and to build on the reputation and image of the whole company. Sales and marketing people and those in customer support interact with customers and the wider public. Staff need to be dynamic, professional and people oriented. The market is very competitive so this is often a large and busy department. Safeguarding Everything that happens in the investment world has to sit within the legal and regulatory rules. The engine that drives the process of checking and advising is powered by the compliance and legal division of the company. The rules exist to protect customer-investors and their money and they make the UK an attractive place to invest. In a growing, increasingly globalised industry. Investment management companies also guard against the risk of any sort of serious failure through sophisticated risk management. HR The job of human resources and finance is to look after the corporate health of the business, helping to secure the structure and keep it stable. The skills and knowledge required for the smooth running of a company in its finance and administration departments have similarities across all industries, but the innovative and global nature of the investment management industry make it a very good place to build your career. IT The information technology systems in an investment management company are vitally important to its success. The people who build and maintain these systems are no longer just in a support function. Our pensions and life savings rest on them which makes the work even more rewarding. The industry is also very fast moving with the constantly changing demands of increased globalisation, new market rules and improvements in technology which have to be met with skill and adaptability.
