Overview (max 80 words) Module team/ author/ coordinator(s) School Site/ campus where delivered The module emphasises the wider, more strategic, proactive and high level role Purchasing must play to develop and effectively manage the supply chain to meet customer needs. It introduces an important range of Purchasing tasks and approaches, quality driven and aimed at adding value, timely supply, as well as controlling costs and eliminating waste through sourcing, selecting and developing long-term supply partnerships. Purchasing price sensitive commodities, buying internationally, contracting, the use of EDI/eCommerce, performance issues are covered. The module exposes students to a range of theory and best practice sufficient to aid career intentions of becoming effective members of multidisciplined management teams, holding a wide range of purchasing and supply chain, logistics positions. 2 All Undergraduate business programmes Optional MODULE AIMS, ASSESSMENT AND SUPPORT Aims To provide a sound understanding of the principles, systems and best practices of Purchasing in its wider, more strategic, supply chain and global contexts. To define its role and emphasise the potential for increasing corporate profitability through quality driven approaches to sourcing, buyer-supplier relationships, costs, and supply chain management. Learning outcomes On completion of the module students should be able to: Demonstrate an understanding of the role, scope and objectives of strategic purchasing and its potential for improving profitability; Employ the purchasing cycle to understand intra and interorganisational processes involved in procurement and the role of purchasing performance measures; Identify the ethical, economic and strategic issues involved in supplier selection and the significance of different styles of buyer-supplier relationship; Demonstrate an understanding of negotiation skills; Apply quality assurance and value analysis techniques within the field of procurement; Demonstrate an understanding of legal aspects of supplier contracts and purchase orders; Identify key features of international procurement, commodities markets and futures hedging; Identify some of the ways that new technology can be employed to improve the procurement process. This option, together with others, may enable students to apply to the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS) for exemptions from the Foundation stage of the Institute's examinations. Total acquisition costs and waste elimination, pricing analysis and discounts. Contracting: purchase orders, terms and conditions, legal aspects
