Principle #1 Be True To Character Build and be guided by a strong moral authority What is the importance of moral character in business? Ask the employees of Enron, Lehman Brothers, Worldcom, AIG, and many others. The lack of character among executives had a huge impact to the business and thousands of investors. Strong moral character is the basic principle that creates the foundation for long term success. Studies conducted in the United States show that employees of any business tend to mimic the behavior or perceived behavior of the company s management. It s easy to say, Everyone else is doing it, so I ll do it too. A culture of character is the bedrock of success. I hope I shall possess firmness and virtue enough to maintain what I consider the most enviable of all titles, the character of an honest man. George Washington

Principle #2 Lead with a Vision Put your vision to work and get outstanding results To grasp and hold a vision is the very essence of great leadership. An inspiring and well-articulated vision can transform a life, a team, and even the world. Yet, in our corporate training events, it is common to find that 97% of team members cannot recall their company vision and less than 1% of employees have a personal written vision. Imagine the difference when an organization has a clear and inspiring vision driving the goals and actions of every employee. A clear vision creates alignment and provides leadership in the absence of supervision. The same is true in your family and your own life. Your vision is the seed of your legacy! A rock pile ceases to be a rock pile the moment a single man contemplates it, bearing within him the image of a cathedral. Antoine de Saint-Exupery

Principle #3 Manage with a Plan Set specific goals and develop a plan to achieve big results Imagine the impact of accomplishing your dreams and achieving what may have seemed impossible. When you have a clear vision, specific goals, and an actionable plan, the seemingly impossible suddenly becomes possible. The irony is that only 10% of employees and people have clearly written goals and an actionable plan. An important part of goal setting is to share your goals and plans. People who do this and send a weekly progress report are 33% more likely to achieve their goals. Many companies have seen an increase in engagement and productivity by helping their employees develop specific goals and a plan. By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail. Benjamin Franklin

Principle #4 Prioritize Your Time Start scheduling your priorities and stop prioritizing your schedule Over 68% of leaders and managers feel that this is their #1 challenge. The sheer speed of daily life can spin you away from what matters most. In a world in which everything seems urgent, it s easy to feel hammered from every side by things that are not that important to you or your business. One great way to protect your time is Pre-week planning. This gives you more control over life and allows you to get real results while maintaining a sense of peace and balance in your personal life. Things which matter most must never be at the mercy of things which matter least. --Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe

Principle #5 Live the Golden Rule in Business and in Life Treat others right and create an outstanding customer experience The importance of living the Golden Rule is invaluable. One of the ways to attract and keep customers is by creating an unparalleled customer experience. Companies that focus on the customer experience have 60% higher profits than their competitors. Yet, the Golden Rule is even more encompassing. It is also about treating people right who can do nothing for you in return. Sometimes just a few kind words are enough to make another person smile and create a lasting ripple effect. We have committed the Golden Rule to memory; let us now commit it to life. Edwin Markham

Principle #6 Build and Maintain Trust Create dynamic teams and relationships that get winning results Imagine the impact of trust on the success of a team! How much more effective is a group when there is a high level of trust between each member of the team? People tend to do business with people they both know and trust. There are specific actions that will foster a high level of trust within your family and team, such as doing what you say you will do. This is the difference between a transformational and transactional leader. A transformational leader creates a high-trust environment where people can flourish and work together to accomplish far more than they could working alone. Whoever is careless with the truth in small matters cannot be trusted with important matters. Albert Einstein

Principle #7 Be an Effective Communicator Listen carefully and practice restraint of tongue and pen Being an effective communicator is a total game changer that will consistently bring out your best and the best in your organization. Poor communication is the number one reason couples split. It also costs the average American business a whopping $26,000 per employee every year! Great leaders must be able to communicate properly in order to get great results. There are five things that the top 1% of sales reps and the best leaders do to truly understand the customer. When learned and applied, this principle will transform your life and your results! Speak when you are angry and you will make the best speech you will ever regret. Ambrose Bierce

Principle #8 Innovate Through Imagination Discover how to find solutions and do the seemingly impossible Ordinary people accomplish extraordinary things when they discover how to unlock the power of their mind. Your imagination is capable of producing endless opportunities and possibilities. Teams that learn how to tap into the imagination become disruptors and industry innovators. It s the key to staying relevant and mastering the art of the pivot to stay on top. Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life's coming attractions. Albert Einstein

Principle #9 Be Accountable Get results! No blaming, no excuses, and no whining. Imagine a team where there is no blaming, backbiting, or excuses. Highly functional teams and families have a culture of accountability. They control what they can control, they stay action oriented, and they eliminate costly procrastination. One of the greatest roadblocks to personal success arises when people blame others and don t take responsibility for their actions. At the end of the day we are accountable to ourselves - our success is a result of what we do. Catherine Pulsifer

Principle #10 Apply the Power of Knowledge Learn, learn, learn and apply what you ve learned Great leaders have an insatiable appetite to learn how they can be better and improve. Shockingly, 42% of college graduates never read another book after graduating from college. The life-long pursuit of knowledge is one of the biggest drivers of success and growth. If you thoughtfully engineer what goes into your mind, this will have an enormous impact on your ability to get the results you want and achieve your dreams. Greatness in, greatness out! You will be the same person in five years as you are today, except for two things: the people you meet and the books you read. Charlie Tremendous Jones

Principle #11 Live in Peace and Balance Success starts with attitude and a balanced life A recent study shows that 30% of employees feel burned out by their jobs and 42% feel like they ve used all their energy by the end of the day. Picture the difference in an employee whose life is balanced and has a strong inner sense of peace verses the employee whose stressed out and totally out of balance. Which one will get better results and be consistently more productive? In a chaotic world, the most successful people eliminate task saturation by doing the things that bring peace and balance amidst the storm. Being successful means having a balance of success stories across many areas of your life. You can t truly be considered successful in your business life if your home life is in shambles. Zig Ziglar

Principle #12 Never Give Up! Persist and you will succeed! Everyone who dares to dream and grow will be tested. No person or organization is exempt from challenges. Successful leaders do not let these challenges defeat them, but view them as motivation, inspiration, and learning experiences. Michael Jordon missed more than 9000 shots in his career. He lost 300 games and missed 26 game winning shots he had been entrusted to make. His perseverance allowed him to become one of the greatest basketball players. Great leaders persist and keep trying until allies appear, doors open, opportunities arise, and goals are realized. For example, 90% of sales representatives give up after four contacts, yet, 80% of sales are made after the fifth contact. The prize goes to those who have the no quit attitude! So long as there is breath in me, that long will I persist. For I know one of the principles of success if I persist long enough, I will win. Og Mandino
