Moving to the Next Level Safety Leading Indicators Measures (SLIM) System Things you measure today to avoid accidents and injuries tomorrow. We measure 4 categories Participation Training Job site observations Inspections Data is gathered locally and reported monthly as part of scorecard information. Discussed monthly on a safety teleconference.

Participation Objective: Measure employee involvement Specific measures: Injury prevention program: number of participants Near misses: number reported Stop the job: number reported Local health and safety issues: number reported and resolved Data taken from rosters and feedback forms Responsibility for developing tracking and reporting process determined locally

Training Objective: Encourage timely completion of all required health and safety training Required safety training from existing matrixes (CPR, pole top rescue, etc.) Measure percentage of employees completing all required training Data monitored locally

Job Site Observations -- Where applicable -- Objective: Measure the frequency and results of job site observations and ensure that recurring issues are identified and addressed Not specific people Measures to be reported: Number of JSOs completed Percent safe behaviors Major observations and corrective actions Responsibility Local JSO leader

Inspections --All locations-- Objective: Ensure regular field inspections are conducted to identify and correct potential hazards Recommended guideline: 8 inspections completed each month 1 facility inspection each quarter Use existing inspection check sheets

Inspections --(Continued)-- Measures to be reported: Number of inspections completed Percent safe Major observations and corrective actions Responsibility determined locally: Recommend H&S professional, but could include supervisors and Council leaders, etc.

Leading Indicators Leadership commitment is critical Build on what already exists Keep it simple Communicate its value Continually reinforce link to lagging indicators (OSHA, MVAs). Stay the course
