2 Many workers are injured in industrial workplaces, such as water and wastewater plants, from the unexpected startup of machines or the accidental release of hazardous energy. Operations and maintenance workers are prone to these hazards when operating or performing maintenance functions. This module identifies the protective practices and procedures necessary to shut down and isolate machines and equipment. An important part of the protective system is the requirement for workers to be properly trained in their role for lockout/tagout procedures & protocols. Workers are also required to perform periodic inspections to ensure the integrity of the safety systems. OSHA believes that approximately forty million workers need to be trained on this subject. It is estimated that this training will prevent over a hundred fatalities and thirty thousand injuries, per year. Topics covered in this course include why Lockout/Tagout is required; real-life case studies; key aspects of Lockout/Tagout protocols & procedures; the correct application of locks and tags; employer responsibilities; practical issues that one faces in the plant when following Lockout & Tagout procedures and how to tackle them within OSHA guidelines; special circumstances and how to tackle them.
