1 Director of Programme Innovation & Funding Role Profile Location London, ICH Department Programme Innovation and Funding grouping Reports to (Job Title) Matrix manager (if applicable) Chief Executive Salary Band Director Non applicable Competency level 5 Role definition Role purpose This role, as a member of the Christian Aid Directorate team, shares responsibility for the overall performance of Christian Aid and the wider Global Partnership in delivering on its strategic priorities approved by the Board. Specifically, this role directs the work of the Programme Innovation & Funding (PIF) Department which is responsible for supporting and coordinating the programme funding and resourcing support Christian Aid receives from government institutions, trusts, foundations, major donors and the private sector. This is a growing source of funding and support, which currently represent over 55% of Christian Aid s income. The success of this work is critically dependent on the effective and efficient delivery of high impact programmes that are subject to exacting high levels of compliance and reporting standards from donors. This is essentially an outward facing role that takes lead responsibility in nurturing and growing the development of Christian Aid s relationship with key donors, inspiring their engagement to support transformational interventions that can bring about deep and lasting change for those living in poverty. It leads the development of new high value donor relationships and creative partnerships that challenge and inspire innovative and sustainable new ways of delivering impact at scale. The role is responsible for ensuring the associated risks of this work are managed effectively across the entire funding portfolio within the parameters of the risk appetite set by the Directorate and the Board of Christian Aid. Key outcomes Contributes effective leadership to the Directorate for the overall performance of Christian Aid in delivering on its strategic priorities approved by the Board. Ensures the work of the Programme Innovation & Funding department meets ambitious agreed income targets across its funding portfolio of institutions, trusts, foundations, major donors and the private sector. Identifies, develops and nurtures high level relationships with key donors who have the potential to significantly resource the expansion of Christian Aid s work and impact across the Global Partnership. Ensures the relationships of all key donors are developed and supported in a way that inspires long term trusting partnerships. Ensures PIF provides effective support to the design, development and delivery of high

2 quality, high impact funded programmes that bring about deep and lasting change at scale. Ensures the portfolio of risk of all PIF supported programmes across the Christian Aid Global Partnership is managed effectively and strategically within the parameters of Christian Aid risk capacity and appetite Fosters strategic connections across Christian Aid s Global Partnership between policy, programme and funding to build strong and collaborative initiatives in the design, development and implementation of high impact programmes. Facilitates and catalyses the development of innovative initiatives that support new programme approaches and resourcing models. Champions a whole organisation commitment to continuous programme quality improvement through the cycle of learning. Identifies and develop talent ensuring PIF staff have the requisite competencies, relationships and systems to be able to deliver Programme Innovation & Funding objectives. Nurtures entrepreneurial behaviours that support responsible risk taking, encouraging failing fast learning from situations where activities & plans have not been successful. Role agility Expected travel per annum Up to 30 days On call/unsocial hours Yes The post holder may be expected to travel at short notice where this is necessary. The post holder will be required to attend evening and weekend donor events, which will include events that support key moments in the Christian Aid calendar. The role also participates in an on call duty rota on a regular basis to cover out-of-hours emergency situations and when necessary acts as a media spokesperson when called upon to represent the view of Christian Aid s senior management. Christian Aid operates within an agile framework and all employees are required to work with this. Further details of specific tasks and duties will be agreed with the line manager as part of the performance agreement. Any reasonable duty may be assigned that is consistent with the nature of the job and its level of responsibility. Role context The Programme Innovation & Funding (PIF) Group works in collaboration with other colleagues across Christian Aid s Global Partnership to deliver a quality service that supports the design, development, implementation and funding of innovative programmes with lasting transformational change for people living in poverty. In so doing, it strives to significantly increase the diversity, scale and flexibility of funding available for this work, providing an exceptional experience for our donors across all funding areas managed by PIF, inspiring and motivating their commitment to partner with Christian Aid. PIF support works that currently raises in excess of 55m of Christian Aid s annual income. PIF has approximately 65 staff with a range of skills and expertise to support a quality end to end programme design and donor support service across Christian Aid s entire restricted funding portfolio. Although these staff are based in various locations across our UK regions and nations and country programme offices, the majority are currently based in London. Within PIF, staff are organised in the three following resource hubs:

3 Key Donor Partnership Management Programme Strategy & Innovation Programme Development & Technical Support Based in London, this role line manages the three resource hub leads who are members of the PIF Strategic Leadership Team, which is chaired by the Director of PIF. This team oversees the effective implementation of the PIF Strategy, ensuring the efficient deployment of PIF resources to support the wider work of the Global Partnership in the effective development and funding of high quality, innovative programmes that have transformational impact on poverty. It ensure these programmes a) are resourced with appropriate skills and capabilities b) are supported by efficient and effective delivery systems and processes c) are compliant with donor requirements and d) strengthen strategic partnerships that inspire donors to support the work of Christian Aid. Role requirements Relationships External Leads the development and nurturing of relationship with high value donors ensuring their partnership with Christian Aid inspires and enables them to maximise opportunities to engage and support programmes that have a transformational impact on poverty. Represents Christian Aid at high level external meetings with key stakeholders such as DIFID, senior government officials, donor institutions, Philanthropists & INGO contacts. Represents Christian Aid at major donor events to raise funds and the profile of the organisation. Internal Shares in the planning, development, leadership and managerial work of the Directorate. Deputises for the Chief Executive and other Directors as required. Works closely with all other Directors and their departments to ensure integration, coherency and coordination on the development and implementation of all funded projects and programmes supported by PIF. Provides regular reports on PIF performance to the Finance, Fundraising & Investment Committee and the Christian Aid Board as appropriate. Manages the PIF Department senior management staff, delegating authority and responsibility appropriately. Chairs internal committees most relevant to the post Decision making Shares in the planning, development and managerial work of the Directorate, deputising for the Director and other Directorate members as required.
