1 Title: Department: Office of Physical Plant, Facilities Sources, Grounds Operations Reports To: Supervisor, Custodial & Grounds Services Date Prepared/Revised: March 16, 2007; Revised May 5, 2008; Revised October 25, 2012 Purpose, Scope & Dimension of Job: This position is responsible for maintaining the College grounds in a safe, functional and attractive condition. Responsible for basic ground maintenance service and other tasks as assigned. Supervisory Responsibility: None Essential Duties/Major Accountabilities: Safety Reports immediately any unsafe or dangerous conditions, and any irregular use of equipment, buildings, or grounds to the appropriate administrator. Organization Conducts periodic inspections of grounds and related equipment per department established checklist. Maintains and improves all College landscapes including, but not limited to: mowing, raking, trimming, planting, weeding, fertilizing, pest control, and other basic ground maintenance of lawn areas on college property. Removes trash and other foreign materials from college property and along adjacent public streets. Removes snow from driveways, parking lots, sidewalks, and other areas on college property. Erects, repairs, and maintains all fences and signage on College property. Installs, repairs, and provides seasonal maintenance of irrigation system, controls, and water containing structures. Provides herbicide application per campus grounds maintenance schedule. Use cold patch for repairs to parking lots and driveways, including gravel, asphalt or concrete; cleans ditches, storm basins, and drains; cleans and grades shoulders and driveways. Maintains parking ramp stairwells by picking up trash, debris, sweeping, and mopping stairwells. Maintains parking lots and parking ramps lighting by changing bulbs as necessary. Moves furniture and sets-up offices and other college spaces as directed. Has basic knowledge of painting procedures. Perform all other duties as assigned. Materials & Equipment Transports materials and equipment as directed by the Supervisor Custodial & Grounds Services. Maintains and provides repairs to all grounds equipment, and furniture per the College work order system. Properly uses and cares for all equipment and materials. Page 1 of 5

2 Assists in the evaluation of products and equipment used in grounds operations. Information Systems Understand and effectively use the College Computerized Maintenance Management System work order software. Training Attends training as required by Supervisor, Custodial & Grounds Services Administration & Reporting Make recommendations to the Supervisor, Custodial & Grounds Services for annual budget requests and capital project work. Customer Relations Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work. High School diploma or G. E. D. 2. Must have demonstrated positive and progressive work performance in current or previous position. 3. Six months with professional grounds keeping and/or landscaping experience. Bargaining unit custodians with the equivalent of six months of experience performing grounds tasks on an out-ofclass basis at Mott College, including, but not limited to overtime and work done on a seasonal basis, meet this qualification. To satisfy the equivalent of six months of experience, the unit member custodian must have performed 1,000 hours of out-of-class grounds work. 4. Ability to demonstrate knowledge of common grounds keeping practices and proficiency with the operation and care of basic grounds keeping tools and equipment. Able to pass pre-employment drug screen and post-offer grounds physical. 5. Successfully pass Assessment Testing. Page 2 of 5

3 6. Must be able to perform basic custodial duties per College standards (mop stairs, clean up spills, etc.). 7. Must be able to work under extreme temperatures and weather conditions. 8. Must be available for special projects and snow emergencies with minimal notice. 9. Must maintain a valid Michigan Driver s license while employed as a. 10. Must obtain a valid Michigan Chauffer s license within three months of hire. This license must then be maintained while employed as a. 11. Ability to work effectively with a team. Seek input from and maintain effective ongoing communication with others. Work safely and effectively around the public; maintain cooperative working relationships. 12. Must possess good oral and written communication skills and be able to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to express ideas effectively and concisely. 13. Ability to prioritize multiple tasks. 14. Work independently in the absence of supervision. 15. Certification for Forklift and Boom lift required within one year of hire. Additional Preferred Qualifications: 1. Two or more years of professional grounds keeping/landscaping experience 2. Pesticide and herbicide application certifications. 3. Master Gardener Certification. 4. Forklift Certification 5. Boom and scissor lift Certification. 6. Certified arborist in tree pruning and trimming. 7. Experience in operating and maintaining irrigation systems. 8. Experience with heavy equipment (i.e., back hoe, front-end loader, hydraulic lift, riding mower, pressure washer, sweeper, etc.) 9. Experience maintaining grounds similar in area and character with the College. Unique Aspects of Job: 1. Ability to walk, kneel, climb, stand, stoop, crouch, reach, pull and do related physical activities necessary in performing grounds work. 2. On call 24 hours per day, 365 days per year and may work unlimited hours in an emergency. Emergency is defined for this job description as snow event or other College emergencies. Special grounds projects are not included in this 24/7 requirement. Examples of Work Assignments: Snow and ice removal, mowing grass, weeding, edging, mulching, tree & shrub trimming, planting & cultivating perennial and annual plants, trash pickup, furniture moving and set-up. Occasional light custodial duties and clean up. Physical Requirements: 1. Essential and marginal functions require maintaining physical condition necessary for walking, standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time; heavy, moderate or light lifting and carrying (up to Page 3 of 5

4 60 lbs. unassisted to a height of three (3) feet repetitively); bending, stooping, kneeling; operating motorized equipment and vehicles. 2. Ability to operate a passenger automobile, station wagon, 4-wheel or 2-wheel drive Jeep-type vehicle and pick up truck using an automatic gearshift. 3. Works on ladders up to 12 feet. 4. Handles and mixes chemicals per directions on labels; may wear personal protective equipment several hours per day; works at varying times in areas as assigned. Hours/Schedule: 6:00 am to 2:30 pm Monday thru Friday first shift 2:30 pm to 11:00 pm Monday thru Friday second shift Full-time. Additional hours may be required to accommodate deadlines, events, schedules, etc. Must be capable of working extended hours in case of emergency situations.
