1 JOB DESCRIPTION JOB TITLE: Health, Safety, Security and Assurance (HSSA) Advisor (Viridor) DEPARTMENT/FUNCTION: Health, Safety, Security & Assurance BASE/AREA: Area Based (aligned to Viridor business function) RESPONSIBLE TO: Head of Health, Safety, Security & Assurance (Viridor) BAND/LEVEL: 3 1. JOB PURPOSE: Reporting to the Head of Health, Safety, Security & Assurance (HSSA) this post holder will provide professional advice to the business on all matters relating to HSSA. This post holder will offer expert knowledge and skills in order to generate and promote a positive Health & Safety culture. This represents a key role in supporting the business to identify and control, so far as is reasonable, Occupational Health & Safety risks. 2. CORE DUTIES & KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsible for ensuring that the business is aware of its legal duties with respect to relevant Health & Safety legislation and associated approved codes of practice and guidance. The HSSA Advisor is based in an area or region, although visits to other operational sites and facilities across the company s footprint will be required. The HSSA Advisor will monitor compliance with relevant legislation throughout the company and ensure policies and practices are adopted that support the aim of the business to: - have zero work-related health issues and injuries to its employees and others affected by the company s operations become a risk-focused organisation ensure that it stands out as a top-performing organisation amongst its Water UK peer group have a management system that is dynamic, flexible and meets the requirements to be certified to OHSAS18001 This post holder will assist the Head of HSSA (Viridor) to plan, produce, implement, monitor and review the organisation s H&S management system. The principal activities of the HSSA Advisor are: Assisting with the preparation of Health & Safety strategies and ensuring the management system reflects the stated H & S policy document Ensuring that the management system(s) are risk focussed and implemented consistently throughout the organisation Identifying, from findings relating to incidents, near misses, hazards and inspections, where improvements and/or modifications to the management system are required, and prioritising the changes on the basis of risk Supporting the business in the event of emergency situations, including fulfilling a role as part of the company s emergency response team Support the business to investigate incidents, including technical advice and guidance to identify root cause and practical actions to prevent reoccurrence. Monitor, review and recommend system improvements driven by information using leading indicators, leadership skills and core values and competencies Ensuring that the functional managers within the business understand their responsibilities for managing the Health & Safety of their teams Ensuring that a framework exists for setting out the competencies required of managers and supervisors to allow them to operate on the basis of risk and to carry out detailed task and site risk assessments Ensuring that a framework exists for setting out the competencies required of operational personnel to enable them to operate on the basis of risk and to carry out dynamic risk assessments Working with the HomeSafe Team to develop material for implementation across the Pennon group of companies Promoting and encouraging new Health & Safety Representatives and developing their skills and competencies

3 Supporting the functions to produce safe systems of work associated with high risk activities Planning practical and effective methods, both preventative and remedial, of promoting health within the business Attending functional Health & Safety committee meetings Supporting or leading in-house training of managers and employees in respect of Health & Safety issues and risks Keeping records of findings of inspections and producing reports that promote best practice and focus on risk reduction Keeping records of findings of incidents and accidents and producing statistics as required to enable improvements to be identified, ability to analyse statistics and draw conclusions to identify performance improvement opportunities Keeping up to date with new legislation and maintaining a working knowledge of all Health & Safety legislation, Health and Safety Executive (HSE) documents and any developments that particularly affect the waste industry Produce and communicate briefings to the business of any material impacts arising from new legislation or HSE documents Undertaking formal inspections and reviews of functional activities to ensure the Health & Safety management system is operating in accordance with its aims and objectives Producing management reports and safety bulletins as required Advising on a range of specialist areas, e.g. fire regulations, hazardous substances, noise, safeguarding machinery and occupational diseases Maintaining Health & Safety competence through continuing professional development

PERSON SPECIFICATION Category Qualifications / Requirements / Desirabl Training Minimum of 5 GCSE s or equivalent, including English and Mathematics at grade C or above Assessment Criteria NEBOSH National Certificate or equivalent level 3 qualification in Occupational Safety and Health Bachelors Degree/NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent level 6 qualification in Occupational Safety and Health Membership of a Health & Safety professional Institution: - Chartered level Graduate level Experience Experience in a specialist Health & Safety role advising a business on systems and processes and/or have had a front line Health & Safety responsibility. form/ Experience of being instrumental in documenting and/or implementing and/or monitoring a management system to HSG65 or OHSAS18001 that has achieved or retained a recognised certification by an accredited body form/ Involvement with the introduction and maintenance of a successful behavioural safety programme Skills / Knowledge Understanding of the waste sector environment and its planning, reporting and regulatory obligations. form/ Good communication skills with the ability to liaise confidently both verbally and in writing. form/ Good organisational skills with the ability to prioritise work effectively innovate and work well under pressure.

5 Ability to work on own initiative in a constructive manner and as a member of a team. Computer literate and skilled in the use of MS Office including Word and Excel. / Demonstrable knowledge of statistics and reporting of H&S metrics and an ability to draw conclusions from statistical analysis.
