3 TECHNOLOGY COLLEGE SARAWAK 1.0 Background Industrial training is an essential component in the development of the practical skills required by a student prior to graduation. It is also an aspect of education that integrates knowledge with planned and supervised career-related work experience processes. The purpose of the course is to develop and strengthen the students educational and career preparation. It allows the students to understand the connection between what is studied and how it is applied in the real world. It also exposes the students to the interpersonal relationships a job requires, both with co-workers and superiors that are essential in obtaining a successful and satisfying career. 2.0 Learning Outcomes i. Communicate effectively through appropriate written and oral modes. ii. Identify, formulate and solve management related problems. iii. Work collaboratively in a team to achieve common goals. iv. Analyse situation and suggest solutions based on activities and experience obtained during the industrial training. v. Demonstrate basic knowledge of leadership. vi. Write a report according to the industrial training format. vii. Present orally the report based on industrial training experiences. viii.critically analyse situation and suggest solutions based on activities and experience obtained during the industrial training. 1

4 TECHNOLOGY COLLEGE SARAWAK 3.0 Training Duration The training duration is 20 Weeks (5 months). Any changes of the duration will be according to UTM academic calendar. 4.0 Course Code SHAD 4058 Industrial Training Practical SHAD 4064 Industrial Training Report 5.0 Conditions for Registration of IT Students will be allowed to register for IT after fulfilling the following conditions: obtained the number of credits determined by the faculty And/Or have taken all the pre-requisite courses determined by the faculty And/Or met the additional conditions determined by the faculty. Students are not allowed to register for other courses while undergoing IT. 2

5 TECHNOLOGY COLLEGE SARAWAK 6.0 Procedures in Applying for Industrial Training A briefing on Industrial Training will be conducted by the Centre of Learning and Competencies and it is compulsory for the students to attend. Students need to fill in Application Form for Industrial Training together with resume and submit to Centre of Learning and Competencies. Students should identify prospective organisations for Industrial Training. Centre of Learning and Competencies will then write a letter to respective organisations and notify the student on their training placement once it is granted. Students should NOT SEEK to be engaged with another organisation for such reasons as higher pay, better working hours, more convenient location, and etc. upon confirmed placement. If the student wants to change his/her placement last minute before going to Industrial Training without valid reason, a PENALTY of RM300 will be imposed and student is not entitled for any services provided by Centre of Learning and Competencies. NO job hopping. If a student wants to leave his/her current placement, he/she must provide justification to the Centre of Learning and Competencies and his/her organisation, and receive the approval BEFORE he/she can leave his/her current placement. 8.0 Student's Attendance Students who undergo Industrial Training should always comply with the organisations' regulations and working time. Students classified as failures will be required to repeat the training in another organisation at a time determined by the faculty if students exceed a maximum of TEN (10) days of leave (inclusive sick leave, accident & etc), excluding public holidays and subject to approval by the organisation. If students have any problems, students should contact or forward the matter to the Centre of Learning & Competencies. 4

7 TECHNOLOGY COLLEGE SARAWAK 9.0 Rules during Industrial Training (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) (f) (g) (h) (i) Students MUST fill in Reporting Form for Industrial Training and return it to Centre of Learning and Competencies within one (1) week of training. Students MUST abide by the Code of Conduct of Technology College Sarawak. Students MUST abide by the terms and conditions of the organisation. Students MUST dress professionally and well groomed. Students should be respectful to all colleagues. Students MUST be punctual for work and adhere to the working hours of the organisation. Students are required to OBTAIN approval from organisation s supervisor before going on leave and MUST record it in Record of Leave Taken Form. Students as a representative of TCS MUST uphold the reputation of TCS and should do everything possible to maintain the good relationship between TCS and the organisation. Students should NOT have any serious/personal relationship with organisation supervisor as it is contrary to professionalism ethics. 5

8 TECHNOLOGY COLLEGE SARAWAK 10.0 Responsibilities 10.1 Tasks Performed Students will be given daily log book where all the details of the duties/tasks performed are recorded on a daily basis. Students are advised to identify and record any tasks given and any form of contributions to the organisation. Logbook should be evaluated by the organisation s supervisor on a weekly basis Submission of Report & Presentation (a) (b) Students are required to submit a draft of the report to TCS Supervisor. Any amendment and improvement shall be done accordingly. Students are to complete the report and Logbook, and presentation date will be informed. The report must be in good quality and explain all the industrial experiences and knowledge gained. The report MUST NOT be in notes and figurative forms. 6

Students who fail the reports section will have to re-submit the reports within the stipulated time without undergoing the IT again, but those who fail the training section will have to repeat the IT and send new reports. The total marks awarded by the supervisors from the faculty and industry must not be less than 50%. 7

10 TECHNOLOGY COLLEGE SARAWAK 12.0 Plagiarism/ Copying Plagiarism is defined as the act of using another person s work without the proper acknowledgment and admitting it as your own work. The ideas and writings taken from the original source without the acknowledgment will be viewed as plagiarism. The following actions are viewed as plagiarism: i) Copying or lifting texts and using them as your own written effort. The excerpts must be reviewed and rewritten using own words and the source of the information must be included. ii) Ideas taken directly from a source or reference without acknowledgment. The direct lifting of ideas should use the quotation style of writing and cited accordingly. Plagiarism is a serious academic misconduct and actions can be taken according to the University Code of Conduct. 8
