3 INTRODUCTION Tate Enterprises Limited is a fully owned subsidiary of Tate Galleries with a remit to generate income to fund Tate s activities; the contribution to Tate is increasingly important. Tate Enterprises Limited is made up of two key businesses, Tate Commerce and Tate Catering. In the last five financial years, Tate Commerce s turnover has ranged from 13.5m to 19.9m, averaging 16.7m and with an average mean net operating profit of 2.6m. Income derives from eight fixed shops and up to five temporary exhibition shops across the four Tate sites, as well as the Tate s online shop, trade sales of in-house produced books and product, picture library, licensing and filming income. During 2017/18, publishing produced 47 in house titles split 24/23 by exhibition related and non-exhibition related titles. Additionally, the sales team were responsible for 11 co-editions, eight buy-ins and one licencing deal. Merchandise is a growing part of the business, turning over more than 9m of income for the first time in 2017/18. Following a period of investment, the online shop now operates off a single platform along with revenue generating parts of the Gallery and is forecast to grow year on year to a point at which it returns a net profit in 2018/19. After the expansion of Tate Modern in 2016, the average number of employees in the company for 2017/18 was 237. Tate Commerce works hard to foster cohesion, collaboration and good working relationships with all departments within Tate, such as: Directors and curatorial teams at each of the four galleries (Modern, Britain, Liverpool and St Ives); Development, responsible for fundraising and sponsorship revenues; Tate Audiences Division, responsible for marketing, visitor services and membership across the group and online; Tate Catering, responsible for restaurants and catering across the four sites; Tate Communications, responsible for press relations; Digital, responsible for Tate s website and ecommerce platform; and Learning, responsible for all learning activities. 4 THE ROLE This position will lead the overall activity of Tate Commerce, a division of Tate Enterprises Limited, including retail, publishing, licensing and ecommerce with a focus on generating profitable growth and a financial return for Tate. The post holder will work in close collaboration with all four Tate galleries and in line with Tate s vision. The CEO Tate Commerce will be strategic and innovative with a strong ability to execute, deliver results and develop the business. It is expected that the post holder will also look for areas of innovation and new ventures to develop new revenue streams. Please note that catering is the responsibility of the CEO Tate Catering, another division of Tate Enterprises Limited, also reporting into Kerstin Mogull, Managing Director, Tate. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES The key responsibilities for the role include: Leading all commercial activity across publishing, retail, product development, licensing (images and brand) and ecommerce maintaining quality and maximising the revenue returns to Tate; Promoting innovation and fresh thinking around intellectual property, content, collections, partnerships and people to drive new revenue streams while protecting existing income; Setting and communicating the strategic direction for future success, with clearly defined financial checks and balances and KPIs, aligned to Tate s mission; Challenging the wider Tate organisation through new ideas while remaining faithful to the Tate brand and identity; Continuing to develop the senior management team (six direct reports) within Tate Commerce across the range of activities; Exploring further partnership opportunities, both within the UK and overseas; As member of Tate Enterprises Limited s Board of Directors, this role reports into Tate s Managing Director and must maintain a good working relationship with the Chair of the Board and the nonexecutive Board members; As a member of Tate s Directors Group and site Advisory Councils, this role has a Tate wide influence, not just within Tate Enterprises Limited; and All legal Company responsibilities, such as: Health and Safety, GDPR etc.

9 TERMS OF APPOINTMENT The role will be based at the offices of Tate Britain in central London and will require some travel between Tate s four galleries.
