3 Job title: Hours: Location: Reports to: Centre Support Officer 17.5 hours/week, Fixed Term (24 months) Northern Ireland (Belfast) Operations Officer - Belfast Introduction This is an exciting time to be working for the DofE. The Charity is undergoing significant development in many areas, increasing the engagement of disadvantaged young people with our programmes. The Charity has grown consistently over the past seven years and continues to invest in the development of the programmes and the infrastructure supporting them. In Northern Ireland we have a Joint Award Agreement with Gaisce The President s Award which enables young people to have a choice of certification a Duke of Edinburgh s Award Certificate, a Gaisce The President s Award Certificate or a Duke of Edinburgh s International Award Certificate.

4 Summary and main purpose The post holder will work closely with the Operations Officer to provide support to new Licensed Organisations and centres to deliver and support the DofE/ JAI programme for young people. The role will also ensure that Licensed Organisations and centres develop a sustainable Leader base to enable development in future years. The purpose of the role is to support the Northern Ireland Operations Officer to ensure more young people take part and complete DofE/JAI programmes and to build the capacity of LOs and centres to ensure that this growth is sustained. Key accountabilities To provide operational support to the NI team. To support the delivery of high quality programmes to young people in DofE/JAI Licensed Organisations and centres. To support the management and provision of safe and enjoyable DofE/JAI programmes for participants in Northern Ireland. Encourage the use of edofe by Leaders and participants and agree the completion of Awards (where appropriate). To support and deliver the Modular Training Framework courses and the DofE Expedition Skills course (training delivery is not currently in essentials and so have added it in). Support the co-ordination of the delivery of expedition activity within LOs and centres either directly or preferably through trained Leaders. Initiate and maintain communication with DofE Co-ordinators as directed by Operations Officer. Support the development of DofE/JAI Leaders, Co-ordinators and Verifiers support them in their role and ensure, in conjunction with the DofE Manager, that they have undergone appropriate training. Actively manage the recruitment of new DofE/JAI Leaders when necessary alongside Licensed Organisation/centre staff. Respond to requests from LOs and centres in a timely manner. Ensure that all necessary expedition and other related paperwork is completed in accordance with DofE required timeframes. Use edofe to measure the performance of the DofE/JAI centres and analyse participation rates and completions. Attend meetings with the Licensed Organisations as necessary to keep up with developments, plans and opportunities etc. Submit reports to line manager as agreed in a timely manner. Act as an ambassador and champion for DofE/JAI Northern Ireland. 4 The post holder will also: Contribute to achieving the overall objectives of the DofE Charity. Undertake any additional and ad hoc tasks as required. Participate in team meetings, events and other meetings as required. Participate in the supervision and appraisal process. 5 Qualities and knowledge Essential Knowledge and experience of DofE and/or Gaisce programmes. Basic Expedition Leader Award/Lowland Leader Award/Hillwalking Level 2 or equivalent. Ability to work evenings and weekends Excellent administrative skills and attention to detail. Build and maintain effective working relationships with wide range of people. Full driving licence and access to a car. Experience of delivering training to adults and young people. Desirable: Mountain Leader Training Award (Summer). First aid qualification. Experience of delivering DofE/Gaisce programmes. Experience of edofe (DofE online management system). DofE Accredited Assessor. DofE Expedition Supervisor. Volunteer management. Skills and competencies Essential: Experience of communication with young people, parents, teachers and youth leaders IT skills. Self-motivated. Planning and co-ordination of multiple projects. Resilient. Commitment to the aims and mission of DofE/JAI. Ability to work as part of a team within DofE and with partner agencies. Desirable: Expedition training with young people and Leaders. Ability to motivate and inspire young people and Leaders. Respected decision maker. Volunteer management. Understanding of the Priorities for Youth Policy. Expedition skills. Measures of success Growth in DofE participation to target. Growth in DofE Award completions to target. Number of new Leaders recruited and trained. Increased number of sustainable DofE centres. 6 What is the DofE? Anyone aged can do a DofE programme at one of three progressive levels which, when successfully completed, leads to a Bronze, Silver or Gold Duke of Edinburgh s Award. There are four sections to complete at Bronze and Silver level and five at Gold. With assistance from DofE Leaders, young people will select and set objectives in each of the following areas: Volunteering: undertaking service to individuals or the community. This cannot be for a business or family member but can be for a charity or for a not-for-profit organisation. Examples: Raising money for a charity. Being a football coach. Helping at an after-school club. Physical: improving in an area of sport, dance or fitness activities. Examples: Joining a local athletics club. Improving their martial arts skills. Taking weekly dance lessons. Skills: developing practical and social skills and personal interests. Examples: Learning how to juggle. Improving musical skills. Build a website, blog or video diary. Expedition: planning, training for and completing a supervised adventurous journey as one of a team in the UK or abroad. It can be by canoe, kayak or boat; on foot; on horseback; by wheelchair or by bicycle. At Gold level, participants must do an additional fifth Residential section, which involves staying and working away from home doing a shared activity. Examples: Assisting at a kids summer camp. Helping deafblind young people and adults to enjoy a holiday in France. Joining a conservation camp.
