3 Market Update As more businesses at both the mid and enterprise level continue with large-scale digital transformations, demand is growing for executives with a robust knowledge of micro and macro trend and insights analysis, cyber security, artificial intelligence and risk management. The trend continues for employers and hiring managers searching for executives who possess a higher level of multi-skill capability and can do more than what is simply in their job description. At an organisational level, this requires being able to see how each role fits in to the broader workforce both up and down the workflow. governance. The amount and complexity of data circulating through and across business networks means it is imperative that this remains protected. The challenge related to IT executive placement is not the availability, but rather that many riskaverse businesses want an immediate return on investment. There is no tolerance for those who are 75% ready for the job, which is causing an even more upward pressure on demand. In addition, the need to reduce costs is pushing more entry-level roles offshore, leading to a vacuum of graduates and first job searchers. The pipeline for developing future executive talent is thin. Respondents clearly see this trend occurring. When asked what they see as the biggest change for the CIO role, 28% said it has become more business focused, while 13% said they notice an increase to demonstrate how and where they have added value. Skills in high demand include problem solving abilities, commercial acumen and an ability to consider the economics of performance (profitability and efficiency). Executives with experience managing large transformation projects, especially with a focus on cloud-based technology, remain highly sought after. However, those with a significant focus on the use of big data and analytics to improve business performance, coupled with the use of predictive analytics and automation, will rise above the pack. Employers have raised their expectations to demand a broader spread of skills and abilities. IT executives are also expected to understand more of cybersecurity, risk management and corporate Given this, salaries and rates have continued to climb with or slightly ahead of CPI. With constant change demanding more spending both capital and operational positive wages growth continues. Exceptions do exist, largely for more senior individuals or those who have built careers in businesses over many years. As a result of continuous salary creep, when these individuals look to change employers there can often be challenges in obtaining a salary match unless the individual sits at the very top. Job seekers looking to succeed in this area need to intrinsically understand the fundamental challenges facing businesses. The pace of overall change is so high that executives need to understand medium and long-term options. Job seekers need to understand how broad changes will affect business strategy, and consider creative ways that macro trends, including AI, automation and even robotics, can play into profitability. 3
