1 Custodian Bismarck Parks and Recreation District This position performs a wide variety of janitorial and custodial duties at the World War Memorial Building, the Park District Administrative Office, or any Bismarck Parks and Recreation District area. The position assists the Facility Specialist and Recreation Manager in maintaining and enforcing policies, procedures, and guidelines within the Park District as they relate to public relations, record keeping, personnel, purchasing, inventory control, promotion, budgeting, maintenance, safety and operation. The position requires completion of high school education/equivalent (GED) with a minimum of one-year experience in a position with similar responsibilities. Position also requires a valid driver s license and the capability to lift and carry objects up to 50 pounds alone or heavier lifting with other employees. Preferred qualifications include an Associate s degree or other post-secondary education related to the job description. Additional experience related to the job description, including building and grounds maintenance, operating light equipment and tools, custodial work and manual labor and/or certificates related to the job description including CPR, AEDs and/or First Aid. Starting bi-weekly salary range is $1,350 - $1,400 and will include the standard full-time employee benefits of the Bismarck Parks and Recreation District. 2 JOB DESCRIPTION JOB INFORMATION Title: Classification: Salary Range: Benefits: Supervisor (s): Custodian Operations I/Non-Exempt Salary range and adjustments are determined on an annual basis by the Board of Park Commissioners Standard Benefits of the District are provided Recreation Manager and Facility Specialist JOB SUMMARY Perform a wide variety of janitorial and custodial duties at the World War Memorial Building, Park District Administrative Office, Bismarck Art and Galleries Association, ND League of Cities, or any Bismarck Parks and Recreation District area. Assist the Facility Specialist and Recreation Manager in maintaining and enforcing policies, procedures, and guidelines within the Park District as they relate to public relations, record keeping, personnel, purchasing, inventory control, promotion, budgeting, maintenance, safety and operation. The position is responsible and accountable for the maintenance and oversight of assigned facilities and personnel on a daily and/or seasonal basis according to District policies and procedures. JOB DUTIES AND TASKS The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work to be performed by the individual within this classification. They are not to be considered an exhaustive or all-inclusive listing of the position s duties and tasks, as they may change or be adjusted, as situations require. * ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS * Custodial Duties Daily cleaning of the World War Memorial Building, Park District Administrative Offices, Bismarck Art and Galleries Association, and ND League of Cities, including cleaning of rest rooms, public spaces, sidewalks, and all other areas of the buildings or other assigned areas. Make all necessary minor repairs and upkeep to the areas so they are safe, clean, attractive, and in a good state of preservation. 1

3 Keep sidewalks and other areas clean at all times. Report any major damages and repairs to the Facility Specialist and Recreation Manager so the situation can be rectified. Comply with the local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, and waste. Knowledge and ability to perform and operate general custodial equipment and repairs. Check and document fire extinguishers and emergency lights monthly and document and report issues to supervisor. * Other Essential Duties Responsible to prepare and maintain personnel time records. Assist in developing budgets, schedules, reports, and other duties requested by the Facility Specialist and Recreation Manager. Assist in developing an inventory of supplies and equipment and maintaining, purchasing, and upkeep of equipment and supplies for assigned areas. Work with staff to maximize facility efficiencies and quality. Follow all Park District ordinances, policies and procedures, including, but not limited to, the Human Resource Policy and Procedure Handbook, Accounting Manual and risk management program as well as applicable federal and state laws. Purchase only through the purchase order/one Card system and only after receiving permission from a supervisor. Efficiently adhere to risk management program including timely submission of incident/accident and safety concern reports, safety training, and inspections. Recycle material as needed. Deliver or pick up of supplies and equipment as needed. Other Duties Develop and maintain a positive working relationship with other staff members, customers and partners. Represent the Bismarck Parks and Recreation District in a positive manner. Other duties as assigned 2

Knowledge of custodial practices, building maintenance, janitorial supplies, small equipment operation, heating and boiler operations. The knowledge and ability to do multiple tasks simultaneously and to perform and operate general custodial equipment and repairs. The ability to notice and react to circumstances that are not normal at the facilities. Ability to manage multiple tasks. Read, understand, and interpret labels on chemicals, reports, manuals and other oral or written instruction. Take direction from assigned supervisor or person responsible for successful completion of task or other supervisors within the division. The ability to work independently, with co-workers, and the general public utilizing the facilities. The ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing. Experience or training in performing some equipment repair, upkeep of grounds, buildings and facilities. Capability to lift and carry objects up to 50 pounds alone or heavier lifting with other employees. The qualifications listed above are to be considered a guideline. Other combinations of education and experience could provide the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform this job. WORKING CONDITIONS Working conditions of this position is mainly the World War Memorial Building, the Park District Administrative Offices, and ND League of Cities. Work is primarily indoors and requires working outdoors and under extreme conditions. 3

5 Park District vehicle is available for working conditions. Requires working with chemicals and manual laboring tasks. Employee is required to be on time and work 40 hours a week and overtime when needed. Evening, weekend, and holiday hours may be required, dependent on activities.
