6 BACKGROUND INFORMATION Introduction The Citizens Theatre is Glasgow s major producing theatre and one of the leading theatre companies in the UK. We have a distinguished history spanning over 70 years and have built an international reputation for producing dynamic and innovative work on our main stage, alongside a highly regarded programme of participatory and education work. Our vision is to transform and enhance lives though performance and participation that everyone can access. Critical to our position as one of the leading producers in Scottish theatre is Dominic Hill s vision to bring together ensemble casts in large-scale theatrical events, to make classics accessible to a contemporary audience and to make theatre relevant to our audiences from our home in the Gorbals. Above all, we are a theatre for the people. Our beautiful auditorium may still have traces of Victorian grandeur but it sits in one of the most deprived areas of the UK. We mount celebrated productions of the classical theatre repertoire, but we do this, uniquely, in an environment where any member of our audience can attend the theatre for as little as 50p. Every year we serve audiences of over 60,000 and reach a further 6,500 individuals through our award-winning programme of participatory and education work. Vision, Mission and Values Our vision is to enhance and transform lives through performance and participation that everyone can access. We achieve this by: Inspiring and challenging our audiences with a year-round programme of bold and accessible interpretations of classic texts, presented alongside new plays that are relevant to contemporary audiences and the world around them; Pioneering a comprehensive programme of learning and participation activities that engages with people of all ages, and especially those within disadvantaged and marginalised communities; Nurturing the talent and creativity of both established and emerging theatre makers whether they are professional artists or community participants; Operating our building as a creative space where employees, audiences and participants from all walks of life feel welcome and equal; Being a resilient, responsible flagship organisation active at the heart of Scottish and UK theatre. Our work is underpinned by a set of values shared across our organisation: We believe that through experiencing drama whether the play is 500 years old or being performed for the very first time our lives, relationships and place in the world can be better understood, explored and celebrated. 6

7 We aspire to be excellent in all we do. We make work of the highest quality that is adventurous and risk-taking, collaborate with the best theatre-makers, and are leaders in our field. We believe in breaking down barriers to engagement with the arts and that everyone should have the opportunity to take part in the creative life of the Citizens Theatre, whether by watching a play or by developing skills and self-confidence in an inclusive environment. We believe in being active at the heart of our local Gorbals community whilst maintaining a reach and outlook that is national and international. We believe in the value and importance of collaboration with like-minded partners and nurturing the talent and commitment of our staff in order to achieve our full potential and offer our audiences the best experience possible. Our ambitions Under the leadership of the Joint CEOs, Artistic Director (Dominic Hill) and Executive Director (Judith Kilvington), the Citizens Theatre has the ambition to: Be the leading building-based producer of innovative and high quality drama in Scotland; Produce a year round programme of Learning and participation activities both within and outside of the building inspired by a strong belief in the transformative power of such work; Nurture, train and support both emerging and established artists and companies; Enhance its reputation nationally and internationally through touring and coproductions; Complete our Redevelopment Project in order to create an organisation in which we can achieve our aims and ambitions well into the future. What makes the Citizens unique in Scotland is the ambition of the programme both on the main stage and within the Citizens Learning department, the high quality of the work, and the expertise of those who deliver it. Capital Redevelopment Project - building a theatre for the 21st century The Citizens Theatre s 19.4million capital project will result in the restoration and expansion of one of Scotland s oldest and most iconic working theatres - the first integrated redevelopment of the building in its rich 140 year history. The capital project to redevelop the theatre is an urgent response to a failing building and the Company s ambitious plans to guarantee its future. The 19.4 million project will: enable the Citizens Theatre to continue to make and deliver unforgettable theatre for the benefit of local, national and international audiences; provide space for theatre makers, established and emerging, to develop innovative and experimental work; create designated accessible, welcoming areas for learning and outreach programmes; celebrate and safeguard the heritage of the building and the organisation; 7

8 provide universal access throughout the building to ensure that everyone is able to participate in all aspects of the Citizens Theatre s work; increase financial sustainability through greater capacity, diversifying sources of income generation and reducing annual expenditure; offer better and updated facilities both Front of House and backstage in order to enhance the experience of all those who come to the Citizens Theatre to work, take part, relax or be entertained; allow the organisation to expand its activities, particularly with regards to the work of Citizens Learning, in-house Studio productions, emerging artists and visiting companies; reduce our carbon footprint by creating a more energy efficient and environmentally sustainable building.
