MAXIMUM ALLOWABLE CONDITION FOR PARTING LINE FLASH AND DIE MISMATCH FOR PLASTIC INJECTION MOLDED PARTS 1.0 GENERAL 1.1 Purpose Purpose of Standard This standard constitutes an acceptance specification for parting line flash and die mismatch for plastic injection molded parts. 1.2 Scope Application This standard is for the use in supplying plastic injection molded parts under purchase orders of Chrysler Motors or its subsidiaries.this standard is limited in its application to those drawings or engineering illustrations which call out this standard number. Original equipment and replacement parts for some vehicles sold by Chrysler Motors Corporation or its dealers are not covered by this standard. 2.0 REQUIREMENTS 2.1 Definitions Part Surface Classifications Class "A" Class "A" Surface (High Visibility) is defined as a surface that is in direct A single asterisk "*" after the paragraph header denotes a technical change to the paragraph. A triple asterisk before and after an item (*** text ***) identifies the specific changed text. Date Mdl. Yr. Eff. Distribution of standards to parties other than Chrysler Corporation suppliers, whether with or without charge, is for information only. A subscription service is available at reasonable cost, which will automatically provide the subscriber with current standards. Subscription information or copies of current standards are available from the Engineering Standards & Information Services Department, Engineering Office, Chrysler Corporation A (6-90) Volume: S Section: 4 Page No: 8891 (1)

view and/or contacted in a functional manner by vehicle occupants Class "B" Class "B" Surface (Low Visibility) is defined as a surface that is not in direct view of vehicle occupants, but the possibility exists that the surface may be visible and/or touched Class "C" Class "C" Surface (Non-Visible) is defined as a surface that is not visible and/or touched by vehicle occupants. All drawings or engineering illustrations that reference this standard must have part surfaces classified in accordance with the criteria established above Parting Line, Flash, Die Mismatch Parting Line Parting Line is defined as the point at which the core and cavity sides of the mold meet and subsequently to form the separation point of the tool Flash Flash is defined as excess material formed where the core and cavity meet, resulting from the core and cavity not being properly shut-off leaving a gap for the plastic to fill or flow into Die Mismatch Die mismatch is defined as an offset condition between the core and cavity sides of the mold. Parting lines caused by mechanical mechanisms such as lifters, slides or cams must meet the requirements of this standard B (6-90) Volume: S Section: 4 Page No: 8891 (2)

2.1.3 Part Quality TABLE 1: FINISH PART QUALITY REQUIREMENTS Maximum Parting Line Flash Surface Type Height Width Maximum Die Mismatch Class "A" 0.15mm (.006in) 0.15mm (.006in) 0.13mm (.005in) Class "B" 0.20mm (.008in) 0.20mm (.008in) 0.20mm (.008in) Class "C" 0.30mm (.012in) 0.30mm (.012in) 0.25mm (.010in) All values listed above are Chrysler Motors maximum allowable conditions. Since plastic injected molded parts usually exhibit both conditions (flash and die mismatch) the total combination cannot exceed the largest value listed for a specified surface. 2.2 Quality Assurance Responsibilities The responsibilities regarding Design Verification, and Production Validation are shown below Design Verification Supplier The supplier shall perform the inspection method specified in section 2.3 of this standard, and be able to show proof of conformance. This initial inspection method will be performed on ungrained parts and prior to dimensional sample submission. Inspection locations and data results must be listed on part submission paperwork Supplier Quality The appropriate Supplier Quality Specialist will review the supplier's documentation and verify compliance prior to dimensional part submission Product Engineering Lab (PEL) The Product Engineering Lab (PEL) shall perform the inspection method specified in section 2.3 of this standard, to determine parting line and/or die mismatch conformance. The only exception to this requirement are parts submitted by a self-certified supplier B (6-90) Volume: S Section: 4 Page No: 8891 (3)

Production Validation Supplier The supplier is responsible for annually verifying part compliance using the inspection method specified in section 2.3 of this standard, and have proof of conformance on file Supplier Quality Supplier Quality shall at their discretion audit the supplier's records or parts to verify compliance Assembly Plant The user assembly plant shall perform the inspection method specified in section 2.3 of this standard prior to determining disposition of parts suspected of having excessive parting line flash or die mismatch. The Product Engineering Lab (PEL) will provide inspection capabilities upon request. Supplier must have a preventive maintenance program in place to ensure part quality and conformance to this standard. 2.3 Method of Testing Procedure Part Preparation The part shall be cut into sections perpendicular to the parting line along its entire length. In order to minimize the shallowing effect of the profile projector and maintain dimensional repeatability the width of the part sections shall be less than 6.4mm. The side surfaces of the part sections shall be trimmed to remove any burrs and obtain a smooth surface. Extreme care must be used during the cutting and trimming process to avoid damaging the parting line Part Measurement Part compliance to this standard shall be verified through the use of a profile projector. Part sections shall be held by a vise and located 90 degrees from the light source. The orientation of the part section can be slightly adjusted to focus in the image. Once the image is visually optimized parting line flash and die mismatch can be accurately measured B (6-90) Volume: S Section: 4 Page No: 8891 (4)

Height Height can be determined by locating the bottom of the parting line on the horizontal cross hair and zeroing out the "Y" coordinate axis on the machine. Then vertically move the image down until the top of the parting line is on the horizontal cross hair. The height will be displayed on the "Y" coordinate axis readout Width Width can be determined by locating either side of the parting line on the vertical cross hair and zeroing out the "X" coordinate axis on the machine. Then horizontally move the image left or right (depending on original position) until the vertical cross hair rests directly on the other edge. The width will be displayed on the "X" coordinate axis readout. Manual measurements can be obtain by scaling the image (10 times size) on the screen, but is not recommended due to the stringent requirements called out in this standard. 3.0 CONTROL The supplier shall not ship parts which do not meet the requirements of this standard. Any proposed changes to this standard should be directed to Chrysler Motors, Engineering office and Supplier Quality, Interior Trim Departments. 4.0 CONTACTS Questions concerning this standard should be directed to Chrysler Motors, Engineering Office or Supplier Quality, Interior trim Department. 5.0 REFERENCES Non Applicable. # # # # # B (6-90) Volume: S Section: 4 Page No: 8891 (5)
